Is DD’s art work good enough to sell.

NC for this as a regular user of MN and this is fairly outing but looking for peoples unbiased opinions.

DD is an A level Art student, it’s actually not where her love lies she is hoping to apply for BIMM’s university In Bristol to peruse music and she also does performing arts.

However she is very talented in her painting and blows me away weekly with her work, we have had a few extra special things from her (some of you might remember the snowman Christmas card, it seemed very popular) and lots of people on here saying that they would buy if able too.

Another few months have gone by and we just had another cracker of a card from her (a thank you card for a friend) and well I just think it’s wonderful and have said she should really think about taking on commissions.

We live in a very rural area so lots of horse and dog lovers and I honestly think she could make a bit of pocket money to put away for uni life or fritter away on gigs noodles and vinyl

Can I ask what people think, she is only a year into A level art and will have lots more of technique to learn but maybe £15 a painting she might have some takers?

No, it is not good enough to sell right now and I'd honestly guess there are other children in her class who produce better work.

It's not at all bad for a child of her age and she should feel good about how her skills are progressing, but it's not good enough to call a professional product that can compete with other artists looking for commissions.

It's the sort of thing I'd feel very proud my kid did and maybe send to a grandparent, but I'd still count it as the sort of art you put on the fridge for a bit before replacing it, like every other bit of school art your kid brings home.

You forgot to say in your opinion…

And?

They're free to sell their work too.

Esp as, at this stage, I guess most of the great artists of DD’s generation are currently in a level art courses …

Rather late to the thread, but I think your daughter's picture is lovely Op and shows real promise! I was going to ask what the horse's owner thought of it, but I see you have now answered that question; surely that is the most valid opinion! Her style will continue to evolve if she continues & will be a lovely side hustle if it's something she gets pleasure from.

When my DH first started working he rented a room in a house belonging to a woman who was an artist's agent. Her grandson used to use the studio in the garden to paint and I remember thinking they weren't particularly all that but he was young and over the years I saw his style evolve from those early paintings to the magnificent work that he now produces today. He is very well known now and has painted world famous portraits that I think are fantastic (and would love to own!).
What I'm saying is, you never know where things might lead for your daughter! Good luck to her in whatever she ends up doing.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 09/05/2024 15:06

Of course it's my opinion, that's why I wrote it.

OP asked on a public forum, I answered what I honestly think.
I didn't start listing every possible criticism and pointed out it's not bad for her age as an art student.

I didn't knock on her door, ask to see her childs work and start critiquing it out of the blue.

Give it another decade and that won't be a picture in her portfolio.

What's wrong with this child being someone who is still learning and not there yet?

SabreIsMyFave · 09/05/2024 13:12

Exactly. If it IS true, I imagine the OP messaging everyone she knows, (and posting on facebook,) with a copy of the horse picture, peddling her daughter's wares, and saying 'she will do one for you for just £15, you just need to order today, and send me a photograph of what you want her to paint. ROLL UP ROLL UP!'

I reckon this happened. Because that is the ONLY way that the OP's DD could have got SEVEN ORDERS in the space of half a day. (If she has that is.)

I genuinely don't get threads like these.

'Critique my DD's artwork...'

'It's a bit basic and needs improvement.'

'You're all WRONG and all so MEAN. My daughter is gifted at art, gifted I tellz ya! And SEVEN people have put orders in for her work now, and THAT is just in a few hours. So there!'

brace yourself

being intrigued about 7 orders in the space of an afternoon has antagonised some on here 😆

No it's the being relentlessly snarky. From the first post.

And ' intrigued.' ?? Pull the other one.

beetforever · 09/05/2024 15:49

what else could it be rather than me being nosy ie intrigued!?

sunglassesonthetable · 09/05/2024 16:01

your next OP 'making it up' conspiracy theory.

“Intrigued” why?

Do people not have 7 friends on this thread.

Pretty sure you can handle anything that comes your way

Yes it appears to be going because of the terminally faux intrigue (aka sticking the boot in for some weird gratification)

sunglassesonthetable · 09/05/2024 16:04

Do people not have 7 friends on this thread.

Teens and social media are amazing. ( obviously news to some ) Surprised she only got 7 commissions.

yes you made the point before about having 7 friends

i suspect you think it’s a winner of a point

but it’s a bit daft really 😆

well that’s even more intriguing

7 teens are so blown away by it that they show their families and friends and they all commission a painting.

All within a few hours

Yep, properly intriguing!

sunglassesonthetable · 09/05/2024 16:07

well.

It's a bit obvious really.

beetforever · 09/05/2024 16:07

all those saying they’d buy one

PM the OP 🤷

sunglassesonthetable · 09/05/2024 16:08

Yep, properly intriguing!

Guessing the teens are the ones that bought.
But intrigue away.
