Where in the world

Where in the world - or the UK - would you live if money was no object?

I’m not talking living in a palace, but a comfortable life style, kids in school. Like a regular life but if it was a lovely dream life rather than the usual slog

Right where I am! West Coast of Scotland, beachside. Can walk completely deserted sandy beaches for miles, wonderful woods and lochs, and a pace of life that seems a word apart from modern bustle. Primary has 15 children total, Secondary school has 200. It’s like a few other places were fifty years ago but most aren’t anymore.

CrissCrossAppleSauce · 08/05/2024 05:25

That sounds lovely! I’m so happy for you that you are exactly where you should be.

That’s kind, thank you @CrissCrossAppleSauce . On a dreich, cold day I do dream of being back in Barbados, where I lived for a few years (it’s brilliant too, in a very different way) but here I just feel calmer than anywhere else I’ve been. Where would you be?

San Luis Obispo, California.
Stunning college town, close to the beach, with a perfect climate. Paradise.

CrissCrossAppleSauce · 08/05/2024 05:51

@DoctorDolittle Years ago we lived in a small city/large town in Canada. It was lovely, near the mountains so skiing in winter on local hills, lake swimming and hiking in summer. But also plenty of shops and restaurants. Perfect for me.

One day I hope to go back there. Pretty happy where I am now. But once in while I dream of that. Or Prince Edward Isalnd. Also Canada but different vibe

@mjf981 sounds amazing! Is that on Highway1? We road tripped around there. It was beautiful

I like busy cities. So central London, or Manhattan.

Justcallmelucy · 08/05/2024 06:41

A small cottage in a hamlet on the west coast of Ireland probably.

DilemmaDelilah · 08/05/2024 06:45

If not only money was no object, but also proximity to family, hospital etc., then I would like to live in the Surrey Hills. I went to school in that area and, whilst my school memories aren't great, I spent as much time as I could walking on the common and various other places in the area. I love the countryside in that area.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/05/2024 06:46

Côte d'Azur. Without question.

Yes it is. Highway 1 is fantastic. Big Sur is out of this world!

Kelowna? Its great, but the bushfires are getting worse every year unfortunately.

familyissues12345 · 08/05/2024 09:27

I'm a funny one as I dream of living in the hustle and bustle of central London, but also somewhere peaceful off the beaten track Grin

this would be my choice. I've never been to Canada 😂 but every time I hear about it it makes me want to move there immediately.

Christchurch, New Zealand. I miss home, I do! I loved going running on a crisp, still, winter's morning, going to our favourite windswept beach where we could walk for miles without running into anyone, going wandering around the university, where my kids spent a lot of their childhood, going to our favourite Greek restaurant. . .

MissAmbrosia · 08/05/2024 10:07

Antibes/Juan Les Pins. Sunshine and lovely food. Coffee or aperols on terraces.

CrissCrossAppleSauce · 08/05/2024 10:41

@familyissues12345 I feel like this. I would also love to live in a beautiful big apartment in London or New York, and just be able to walk to theatres and shows and delicious restaurants every evening. This would be my ideal retirement plan

In the ultimate dream world, I’d have a city apartment. A ski lodge, a beach shack and a cottage in the woods. None of them need to be fancy, just a home in every location. Is that pushing it too far?

CrissCrossAppleSauce · 08/05/2024 10:43

Wow, all these beautiful places. It’s just adding to my wanderlust

@mbosnz I’ve only been to New Zealand once and for work. But I loved it. I hope to go back

@wellthatwasanicesurprise haha, I had no interest in going, but ended up there for quite a few years and was smitten in the first week. We arrived in spring, just as the snow was melting and the tulip starting to pop up and it just felt right

I've always wanted to live in Oslo or Copenhagen. I know both well as a visitor but it's been a life dream to actually live there. I could never have afforded to move for most of my life, but now I probably could afford it Brexit has scuppered the plan.
I'd also have a holiday home somewhere warm with white sand and turquoise sea.

mondaytosunday · 08/05/2024 12:32

I'd have a three bed with basement flat terraced house in Chelsea off the Kings Rd. The basement flat would not have the garden but a little space in front - I want the garden without feeling on display (though I'd want the flat for family so maybe not an issue).
The garden would have tall walls covered in flowering climbers. There'd be a lovely café at the end of the road. My neighbours would be an eccentric old actor on one side with lots of interesting stories and luvvies dropping by, and an arty type writer on the other who inherited from his mother and is every child's favourite 'big brother'. Slightly scatty but good to call on when you need something fixed and always up for a cup of tea or trip to the Chelsea Gardener. A gay couple who like to have dinner parties and are great at picking guests also live on the street, plus a few old matriarchs who keep an eye on the comings and going's and make sure the garden square is well kept. A stylish French family to add that je ne sais quoi that everyone likes to gossip about and a family with indeterminate amount of very good looking relatives all either moving in or out and somehow connected to the old actor rounds out the neighbourhood.
That garden square hosts two or three times a year some sort of community get together - bonfire night, summer BBQ, Christmas thing.
Specific enough?
Where's that extra £3-4m when you need it??

LiterallyOnFire · 08/05/2024 12:35

Florence.

EmpressSoleil · 08/05/2024 13:01

Tokyo. It's my favourite city in the world. There's so much to do, amazing places to eat. Also beautiful nature close by. I even have friends there from when I spent a few months there, a few years back. So I wouldn't be lonely.

On the rare occasion that I buy a euro millions ticket, I always have it in my head that if I won, I would buy a place there.

Cazzovuoi · 08/05/2024 13:10

Another vote for Côte d’Azur.

That or Ligurian riviera - Sestri Levante or Santa Margherita.
