Four nights on Northumberland coast with kids / grandparents - where to stay?

Any pointers on which town / village / area to stay so we can do some sightseeing as well as a day at a lovely big beach would be amazing.

I'm starting to lose the will, as I'm researching the 'best' location to be based in and everywhere looks so lovely.

We ideally would like to see Lindesfarne & Bamburgh Castle's / beaches, but Alnmouth, Beadnell and Berwick all looks lovely too..

Wondering how busy it gets in the summer hols (late July) as that's when we're going.

Taking grandparents (early 70's and mobile-ish) and 2 kids around 10yo.

Help meee!

Bamburgh has a good beach, castle is a bit meh (it is not that old).

SeaHouses is a nice town to be based in if you want trad seaside things - ice cream and mini golf etc.

everywhere is nice so just pick something and it will be fine.

Bamburgh beach is my most favourite in the world but it is just a beach. I think there’s one pub and that’s it. Great for a day out but look to stay in Alnwick, Beadenl, Walkworth, or somewhere with a bit more there. It’s all beautiful!

CatamaranViper · 06/05/2024 15:04

Seahouses for sure. We live up here and it's a great day out. Get on a puffin cruise!

Beadnell has a good selection of pubs and cafes and 2 beaches. I found Seahouses quite depressing.

Octavia64 · 06/05/2024 15:08

Alnwick is lovely to stay in.

We stayed there with elderly grandparents at Easter.

You can walk to the garden and it's possible to get a year's pass for the cost of less than three visits. My mum went most days Grin.

Lots of cafes and a nice bookshop as well.

Newtrix · 06/05/2024 16:46

Definitely Seahouses, ideal base for exploring. 10 min drive from Bamburgh and Beadnell and 30 mins from Holy Island. We stayed in a beautiful cottage at North Farm, 14 min walk along the Heritage way to the beach. Seafield caravans and lodges get fantastic reviews too.

Moidershewrote · 06/05/2024 16:53

Thank you lovely people🥰🥰🥰

I was worried that Alnwick / Alnmouth would be a bit of a trek to Lindesfarne..

Shame to hear Bamburgh castle is a bit meh! I love the look of the beach around there though.

There seems to be a lot of places to stay in Berwick, but maybe that’s too far up🧐

I’m checking Airbnb, Vrbo and Sykes cottages, but there isn’t much to choose from, especially when you need 4 bedrooms.

Seahouses has everything you need for a beach holiday.

Alnwick is lovely, but it's not on the sea.
Bamburgh is lovely, but there is not much there.
Alnmouth - dangerous rip tides for swimming, but otherwise nice. A few shops.

Whatever you do though, visit Barter Books in Alnwick. Go hungry, for both literature and hearty food!

the concrete pods in Newton Hall

I'm so jealous- I love it up there! We always stay in Alnmouth and have done the Lindisfarne trip just fine- just pick your day to make sure the causeway times work. But any of those would be lovely places to stay - Seahouses has a bit more in the way of amenities and a seasidey vibe. If you can find somewhere in Craster i think that would be gorgeous!

Ohh I was looking at a place in Craster!

OP - I'd give Bamburgh a chance. Never heard it described as "meh" before today. Yes, it was thoroughly restored in the 1700s and 1800s but the eleven-foot- thick walls at the base of the keep were built by Normans. The site has been continuously occupied for 1400 years, so not surprising bits have been added. It looks pretty too.

RampantIvy · 06/05/2024 17:10

Have a look at Embleton, Newbiggin and Amble as well.
I love Alnmouth. It's so pretty.
Basically, the Northumbetland coast has loads of great beaches.

SpamhappyTootsie · 06/05/2024 17:13

Craster and Embleton are lovely. We stayed in Embleton so we could head up or down the coast to all the places you’ve mentioned. It was very quiet, but there’s a nature reserve, a beautiful beach and if you can get to Embers pizza when it’s open their pizzas are superb!

Greenvelvetdress · 06/05/2024 17:17

I'd say Amble is great, massive beach and when we've been it's been really quiet and barely used. Good access to the other places too.

Bibbitybobbity70 · 06/05/2024 17:18

Beadnell is lovely as PP already said, couple of pubs, village shop, playback all easily walkable. Beach is lovely sandy, rock pools in small section, apart from high tide water not too deep for younger kids. We've been lots when mine were younger & was safe for us to sit reading a book while they happily played together. Once they're older it's also a great place to paddle board, windsurf when tide is in, water cool though so wetsuits advisable!
20mins away from Alnwick for castle & Gardens, Bamburgh is closer. Seahouses 5 mins drive, plenty shops, restaurants, beach shops mini golf etc & boat trips to Farne isles.

LuluBlakey1 · 06/05/2024 17:22

Seahouses- traditional seaside village, boat trips to Farne Islands to see puffins, seals, loads if other birds and possible dolphins and the iccasional minke whale, next to Bamburgh for beach and castle, and Beadnell- great beach, close to Holy Island for day trip.

Alnmouth- very pretty seaside village , lovely beaches, near Alnwick which is a really lovely market town with Barter Books, the castle the garden, near Warkworth (lovely) and Amble (lovely village) with boat trips to see seals and birds, fish and chips, or walk north from Alnmouth and discover lovely Sugar Sands Bay.

I'd second this, and from Embleton beach you can walk to Dunstanburgh castle, along to Craster or (in the other direction) to beautiful Low Newton by the Sea and the fabulous Ship Inn, and visit Howick Hall Arboretum (lovely woodland walks) where there's a great tea room.

theotherguy · 06/05/2024 17:40

We stayed in Seahouses when the DC were young so we could get icecreams, fish and chips etc easily. The walk along to Bamburgh is my favourite thing to do.
I don't think I would stay in Bamburgh for some reason.

Now we stay in Beadnell which is a bit less seasidey, has lovely pubs and great beach to walk along.

feellikeanalien · 06/05/2024 17:42

Have you tried looking on Northumbria Coast and Country Cottages?

I would definitely agree with staying in Alnwick. Lindisfarne is easily doable from there and Bamburgh. If you like a nice walk then a walk to Dunstanburgh Castle from Craster is nice and the Jolly Fisherman in Craster is a good pub for food.

Remember to check tide times if you're going to Lindisfarne!!

Definitely visit Barter Books in Alnwick.

lndnbrdge91 · 06/05/2024 19:11

Seahouses is fun for all ages. It's perhaps not as charming as some of the other places listed, but has decent pubs and restaurants, as well as an arcade with 2p machines which my children love.
There is also the advantage of a very good bus service along the coast if you don't fancy driving all the time.

Clearinguptheclutter · 06/05/2024 19:13

Seahouses

Went to Amble recently, absolutely beautiful and quite central. Easy distance to Alnwick/Alnmouth and Lindisfarne and we even went all the way to Berwick (about 50 min drive), also able to stop off in Newcastle on the way home for a bit of shopping
