Four nights on Northumberland coast with kids / grandparents - where to stay?

Any pointers on which town / village / area to stay so we can do some sightseeing as well as a day at a lovely big beach would be amazing.

I'm starting to lose the will, as I'm researching the 'best' location to be based in and everywhere looks so lovely.

We ideally would like to see Lindesfarne & Bamburgh Castle's / beaches, but Alnmouth, Beadnell and Berwick all looks lovely too..

Wondering how busy it gets in the summer hols (late July) as that's when we're going.

Taking grandparents (early 70's and mobile-ish) and 2 kids around 10yo.

Help meee!

Seahouses is a bit "chavvy", compared with the rest of north Northumberland, and gets very busy. But has a lot of amenities and the boat trips to the Farnes are worth doing.

Amble used to be rough but has had a real turnaround in the past 5-6 years.

Craster, Embleton, Bamburgh all gorgeous... The beach at Bamburgh is stunning and enormous.

Alnwick lovely but not on the coast as such, you'd go to Alnmouth for the nearest beach from Alnwick. Which is also lovely in fairness but not for swimming.

Seahouses always for me ,fishnchip capital. We’ve stayed overlooking the harbour , fascinating sitting and watching the fishing boat. You can go out on fishing trips, off to the Farne islands. Bus along the coast on the top deck. Craster kippers and nice pub and good walk along to the castle. Bamburgh gets busy too but the castle is fairy tale. Chillingham cattle scary but amazing. Northumberland is wonderful, fantastic seas in bad weather. Study an ordnance survey map to take you off beat places.

I'd second this, and from Embleton beach you can walk to Dunstanburgh castle, along to Craster or (in the other direction) to beautiful Low Newton by the Sea and the fabulous Ship Inn, and visit Howick Hall Arboretum (lovely woodland walks) where there's a great tea room.

Ooooh I am planning a Northumberland trip next spring around Alnwick gardens and I will add Howick Hall to my list of places to go - thank you!

Berwick (amazing town fortifications) to Alnwick (Castle, Gardens, Tree House, Lilidorei & Barter books) is only about 30 miles & chock full of interesting & beautiful places in between (a good coastal bus or a very scenic drive). Try Craster kippers, fresh local crab, fish & chips & penny arcade in Seahouses, go to Lindesfarne (check tides!). Ford & Etal, Chillingham Castle (owned by Dom Cummings eccentric FIL). It's clean, largely empty, friendly & stunningly lovely. Enjoy!!

Thank you all so much!😍😍😍

Alnwick is lovely and works well for families. The Castle, Gardens and Lillidorei play area are right in the centre and there's a good choice of cafes, restaurants, shops and a supermarket. Barter Books (huge second hand book store with nice cafe) is also brilliant. Alnwick has a compact and accessible town centre and is a short drive from Alnmouth.

Amble used to be rough but has had a real turnaround in the past 5-6 years.

Yes. It has become much more upmarket these days. There is a butchers on the main street that sells the best Scotch pies I have ever tasted, and I love a good mooch around the retail pods.

Timee · 06/05/2024 21:33

Seahouses is a good base with plenty options for eating out. It's a stone's throw from Bamburgh and Holy Island.
I agree that Bamburgh castle is a disappointment. It's spectacular from the outside and the beach is beautiful but don't bother paying to go in. If you like castles Northumberland is the place and there are plenty of others.

boredatthehairdressers · 06/05/2024 21:33

We stayed at Craster, but (with similar aged kids plus - most likely grandparents of a similar age with maybe some mobility issues?!) I'd go for Beadnell Bay, for the really lovely, accessible and lovely for being in the water, beach! Everywhere everyone has mentioned is good for driving etc but I'd stay at Beandnell next time - esp with the group you suggest!

sequin2000 · 06/05/2024 21:39

Definitely Alnwick. We stayed in Seahouses and were disappointed, it's not at all quaint or charming and we ended up doing the drive to Alnwick and beyond a lot and wishing we were staying there. Our Airbnb between a Chinese and a tattoo parlour didn't help!

Newuser75 · 06/05/2024 21:42

If you want to stay more inland then I'd stay in Alnwick as as has been mentioned visit barter books, Alnwick castle/gardens/lilidorei.
If you want to stay nearer beach then alnmouth would be my number one choice, followed by craster or amble!
Have a great time!!

Newuser75 · 06/05/2024 21:43

I'd not choose to stay in seahouses although it's lovely for a visit and definitely worth while taking a boat trip to the farne islands to see the puffins, seals and maybe dolphins!

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 06/05/2024 21:48

If you have national trust membership then Cragside is definitely worth a visit too. Beautiful grounds, and fascinating house.

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 06/05/2024 21:50

Oh yes to Ford and Etal, it's gorgeous all round there.

The train is worth doing, if you have kids (or big kids!) who are into that sort of thing.

Craster is great as is embleton.
Def walk to Dunstanburgh castle.
Alnwick castle and Alnwick gardens are both fab.
The farne islands is a great trip have fish and chips in sea houses after.
Cragside is amazing.

fireplacetiles · 06/05/2024 21:53

Along the coast nowhere is very far from anywhere else so don't worry about distances. We live in Amble, I would stay in Warkworth or Alnmouth www.alnmouthhuts.com is lovely but you might find them booked by now. Craster is lovely and very central, spectacular walk to Dunstanburgh Castle and nice places to eat. Wouldn't stay in Seahouses personally, it's all fish and chips and tat shops. Enjoy our beautiful county🥰

Beadnell bay is gorgeous and almost all accommodation is in easy walking distance of it. Also good for paddle boarding as a little sheltered. We stayed in Bamburgh two years ago and there's definitely more than one pub. Love the beach there too. It's never packed even in August. I would always choose coast and day trip to Alnwick rather than the other way round.

Ovaltiner · 06/05/2024 22:06

I'd go for embleton if you're planning to be on the beach. Bamburgh is lovely but there are no loos near the beach, they're a good 20 mins away and I don't think it has sufficient cafes etc to cope with the number of tourists it gets. It is basically a village. Parking can also be an issue.

Other option is Warkworth. Lovely beach, decent size village, great castle.

StrongandNorthern · 06/05/2024 22:07

Bamburgh castle - 'meh' ???!!!
Wow.
What are the castles like where you're from??!
😂😂

1questionfromme · 06/05/2024 22:10

Cresswell is a lovely village - Drift cafe is gorgeous and lovely ice cream shop. Beautiful wide and semi-deserted beach of Druridge Bay. Served by local bus. I like it best of all the Northumberland beaches, and that's a high bar!

Can I add

Yan's, Alnwick - excellent Chinese food
Barter Books, Alnwick - hearty portions of things on toast, things with chips etc during the day
The Landing, Beadnell - Beach bar style casual restaurant right by the beach. Lots of seafood, burgers etc.

BollockstoThis1 · 06/05/2024 22:47

Lots of lovely places to stay in NE. Bamburgh beach is gorgeous with that lovely castle in the background. But I probably wouldn’t stay there as its too quiet. I wouldn’t stay in Alnwick either.

Wherever you stay will be fine and you can visit a different lovely beach everyday if big empty, windswept beaches and big skies and castles are your thing.

We have stayed in a few places at Warkworth over the years (not on the coast but not too far away from anywhere) nice river walk, a castle and some pubs serving food, Budle Bay very quiet but a dramatic view, and we have also stayed at Beadnell and Seahouses twice which is probably the best base. I think it depends what is available, check the reviews and ask again on here.
