Do You Buy Magazine ?

LuluBlakey1 · 06/05/2024 13:32

I am asking because it came up in conversation with a group of friends who were all surprised when I said I never buy magazines. They all buy a couple at least, regularly. I literally never even think of looking at or buying a magazine.
DH gets about 3- a History one, one from his union about 'School Leadership' and he gets Private Eye. I might look at those because they are there but nothing else.
If you do, what do you buy and why? What do you spend a month on magazines?
One of my friends reckons she spends about £30 a month on house magazines.

I've never been keen on them, even as a teenager ( years ago) but I do buy a tv guide each week and feel lost without one around.
I Don't buy newspapers either these days

Giggorata · 06/05/2024 13:42

I buy Interzone, a science fiction magazine, Northern Earth, an Earth Mysteries magazine and Private Eye.

ObliviousCoalmine · 06/05/2024 13:43

I occasionally buy Vogue, depending on who is on the cover/if it's a 'landmark' issue. I keep them though, possibly for framing if I can work out how.

No, we don't buy newspapers now. We do subscribe to the New York Times and we did both subscribe to The Guardian until recently when I took offence at them removing my comment about theLabour Party not taking the rights of women seriously enough and we both stopped our subscriptions at that point.

That 'Northern Earth' looks interesting.

Yup they’re my treat every a few times an year and I buy a few on my birthday- generally cosmopolitan, red, stellar, glamour, woman and home and recently bought nature and science focus. Nothing better in life!!!!

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 06/05/2024 13:51

I get Vogue once or twice a year. I also occasionally buy a food magazine. I know there are a zillion recipes online but there is something much more inspiring for me in actual printed stuff.

Arlanymor · 06/05/2024 13:52

I buy philosophies once in a blue moon if there is something especially interesting or relevant on the cover, but other than that I can go months without buying anything at all.

sophi1995 · 06/05/2024 13:52

No not for a long time but I remember buying them to read on my lunch breaks back around 2008/2009 before Internet was easily accessible on phones. I wasted quite a lot of money on them.

MumChp · 06/05/2024 13:53

Sometimes a German one to keep on reading skills.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/05/2024 13:56

I buy various interiors magazines, a hangover from when I moved into my new house and needed decorating ideas. But now my DDs and DILs are looking for decorating tips, so I flip through the magazines and pass them on to them, or to a friend, who passes them on to others. So I feel I get my money's worth.
Also subscribe to Fortean Times and occasionally buy SFX. But that counts as research and is tax deductible so probably not the same.

Needmorelego · 06/05/2024 14:05

Rarely buy them now.
I used to buy loads. There's probably a whole rainforest gone due to the amount I read in the 90s/00s.
Now.....I read the online versions.
However if it's the type of magazine that comes with something (not a free gift as such but something that is part of the price you pay) so every so often I might buy a craft magazine.
The most frequent ones I buy are the Lego ones if I want the set with it.
I sometimes pick one up if I am going on a long train journey but to be honest I'd rather get something like one of the Commando Comic Books than a "lifestyle" or gossip mag 😂
I am always curious how the Take A Break style ones are still going - who buys them?
I bought a few of that type a couple of years ago when I was stuck in hospital with my daughter - I had read them in about 15 minutes and left them in the family room !
The most random magazine I read is one called "Buses" that my dad gets on subscription. It's actually quite interesting.

allowane · 06/05/2024 14:16

I've never bought magazines. They seem like a waste of money, especially now you can get information and entertainment online. I subscribe my dcs to some kids magazines but that's to get them reading and for the excitement of getting something through the post.

MaidOfSteel · 06/05/2024 14:28

I've been buying magazines regularly since my teens. Now, in my mid 50s, I have subscriptions to GH, Woman & Home and Who Do You Think You Are. I buy Tatler every now & then. I much prefer print editions over the digital versions.

LadyEloise1 · 06/05/2024 14:36

I used to buy loads but since having the internet on my phone I rarely do now.
I loved Tatler, Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, Harpers, Grazia, Woman and Home, House Beautiful, 25 Beautiful Homes back in the day.
Not every month however.

Now I buy Hello for the Oscars or a Royal wedding or celebrity wedding that catches my eye.
The very, very odd Vogue and Tatler and also, though very rarely, the Irish equivalent of Hello.
Now I have Mumsnet and Google.Smile

JaninaDuszejko · 06/05/2024 17:40

We get a magazine quarterly with our English Heritage membership and DH gets the CERN Courier (which is free). I sometimes buy an interiors magazine but very rarely these days whereas ~15 years ago I subscribed to two.

Arlanymor · 06/05/2024 17:47

I had to go to WHSmith earlier to get some supplies (wouldn’t usually go on a BH, but we’re doing Power of Attorney for my parents and there’s a lot of printing - 100 pages!) and off the back of this thread I did have a quick mooch at the magazines. Nearly bought a creative writing one I hadn’t seen before but it was nearly £10! I suppose that is the other thing about print magazines, online versions are cheaper for obvious reasons.

BlueThursday · 06/05/2024 17:53

I have a Private Eye subscription and have since I was about 20 so I think I always will

I do buy tabloid types if I’m going on a plane for easy reading and don’t mind getting interrupted by DD while reading rhem

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/05/2024 17:58

I have a Readly subscription, which I adore. Not only because it saves me money (costs less than buying two print magazines a month) but also because it gives me access to so much I would never have picked up (including international magazines that would be otherwise unavailable to me).

I promise I don't work for them 🤷‍♀️

PickAChew · 06/05/2024 17:58

I read them for free using the app that I can access with my library membership. It used to be Libby App, which was great and had a huge choice but now it's Borrowbox and it's a bit shit, in comparison. I can still get most mainstream UK titles and a few aussie and US ones but none of the more niche independent craft magazines that Libby had.

Mumofyellows · 06/05/2024 18:00

I have a Horse and Hound subscription. Aside from that I wouldn't buy any others!

I did the same this morning before I posted the thread. There were many I hadn't seen, along with some that I recall seeing years ago. I was struck by how much they have gone up and wondered what the audience is for some.

It is a bit of a wonder isn’t it? I used to work in a newsagents when I was 16/17 to save up for my driving lessons and college, so I used to be quite on top of print publications. So it does fascinate me. £10 seems mad, but then maybe I am old?!

JenniferBooth · 06/05/2024 18:32

Woman and Home and a womans weekly like Woman now and again. Got last weeks Woman for the article by Rosie Green (i remember her from Red)

i also got a Bonmarche voucher for 20% off in last weeks Woman which saved me £17 taking what would have been £83 down to £66.

Speaking of Red its £6.99 now. Used to get Red every month for YEARS and i had last months, when they did a section on the perimenopause but this month its now £6.99

thedendrochronologist · 06/05/2024 18:36

I used to love magazines but have no interest now- phone is too consuming!

Had Red a couple of years on subscription but the last time I never read it properly.
