If Shirley Valentine was remade who would you cast?

I’m watching it now and wondering about it.
I wouldn’t want it to be remade of course, it’s perfect as it is!

My first thought was Olivia Coleman, but then immediately changed my mind, and now I can’t remember any actors at all!

Anne-Marie Duff would be a brilliant Shirley. She's such a brilliant actress. I wish she was in more!

Yes Anne Marie Duff is a great call. She needs more shows, wonderful actress.

I agree with some pps that Sally Lindsay would be perfect for this (although no-one could be as perfect as Pauline Collins). But I have seen her in so many things recently, particularly the Channel 5 dramas, that I have ended up with a bit of Sally Lindsay overload.

@LindorDoubleChoc NRFT so apologies if this has already been mentioned but Tom Conti's dad was Italian and his mother Scottish, so he definitely has the Mediterranean heritage from his dad's side.

Not Sheridan Smith, I can't abide her. Not Sally Lindsay either, she can't act for toffee. Agree re Ann-Marie Duff though, she could pull it off.

I don't think they should remake it though. I don't think it can be improved.

Don’t want to derail the thread or anything but: does Tom stay with her on the island after he visits, and perhaps they open their own successful beach bar, or do they separate and he goes home while she stays, or does he talk her into returning to the UK with him and resuming her old life until she dies an unfulfilled woman?
