I’m watching it now and wondering about it.
I wouldn’t want it to be remade of course, it’s perfect as it is!

My first thought was Olivia Coleman, but then immediately changed my mind, and now I can’t remember any actors at all!

Siobhán Finneran
Lesley Sharp
but they're both older than Pauline was.

Laska2Meryls · 05/05/2024 20:43

Nope Nope Nope Nope Nope Nope, , A remake would just be futile... You cant beat perfection..
Pauline, Bernard,Alison. Julia, Joanna and Tom were just utterly , utterly perfect ..

There will only ever be one Shirley Valentine and one Joe .

So sad to hear about Bernard today .. we still often say: "But its Thursday, ..We have Steak on Thursday, Chips and egg is Tuesday " at the dinner table ( even when its not Thursday)

Willmafrockfit · 05/05/2024 20:45

i didnt realise that was Bernard Hill
RIP

I imagine Sally Lindsay as Shirley valentine I'm having a think about husbands.

Agree with Sally Lindsay. She recently made a series very similar to Shirley Valentine - Love Rat ?
Aiden Turner for Costas.

Not Olivia Coleman because she gets too many gigs.

Two English actors born in 1968 to 1972 (for Shirley and her husband) and a Greek actor of about the same age, I guess.

I think the Tom Conti character should be Greek or at least have Mediterranean heritage. It almost feels a bit "black face" that he played that part now, looking back.

Is Conti not Italian? European heritage?

I think if Shirley was re made she would be in her 50s and not her 40s.

Yes!

StMarieforme · 05/05/2024 21:47

ToveJanssonsWife · 05/05/2024 19:46

Yes definitely Joanna Lumley.

Olivia Coleman and someone would rock Jeanette and Dougie from Manchester.

She's unfortunately way older than her 50s!

ManchesterBeatrice · 05/05/2024 21:48

She was so so fabulous but 42 😱😱

Her face looks young its the hair and clothes that age her.

It's mad isn't it.

I deffo feel people dress more yourhfully now!

Bumblebee907 · 06/05/2024 08:58

@StMarieforme Agree wholeheartedly with this.

CandiedPrincess · 06/05/2024 09:12

I think Helen McCrory would have been a great Shirley.

AsYouMightBe · 06/05/2024 09:18

I think it should be recast in a deeply unlikely way with Kristin Scott Thomas, Jeremy Irons and Daniel Auteuil.

lljkk · 06/05/2024 09:18

I haven't seen SV, although it seems to be cultural iconic film

? Joanna Scanlon? But she's too old at 62 ?
Someone on this list.

Chiefly because it amuses me to think of Jeremy Irons going on about his chips and egg.

Willmafrockfit · 06/05/2024 09:19

it was perfect as it was

It is a wonderful film. I first watched it in 1991 whilst at 6th form and have loved it ever since.

Definitely worth watching.

I look at photos of my parents and friends and I’d say they looked 10 years older than they actually were due to clothes and hair.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/05/2024 09:32

Mrsjayy · 06/05/2024 08:38

Her face looks young its the hair and clothes that age her.

But at the time they were fashionable for women in their 40s. I think she in the scenes in Greece she looks great.

If Shirley Valentine was remade who would you cast?
JaninaDuszejko · 06/05/2024 09:44

I don't think a modern day remake would work, nowadays most 42 year old women will be working and have school age children whereas Shirley was a housewife and her son was a young adult.

Willmafrockfit · 06/05/2024 09:54

different times

HRTQueen · 06/05/2024 09:58

Sheridan Smith I saw her play the part on stage last year and she was excellent

she is very relatable I think to many women and her vulnerability is part of that

Kate Winslet as Jane

Olivia Coleman as Gillian

i agree with pp Joanna Lumley can still play Marjorie

but the film is so good one best to leave alone

User14March · 06/05/2024 10:01

Agree, the clothes etc look dated to our eyes but P looked fab.

Having grown up kids today would more typically be early to mid 50s. Poss the mid life questioning and any malaise sets in then for our era rather than at 42.

Makes me think of Educating Rita too, around that time?

stealtheatingtunnocks · 06/05/2024 10:02

I was a teenager when it came out, I remeber my mother really laughing at Shirlty talking to the wall.

now that my kids are the age I was then I think I’ll suggest we all watch it. They forget I’m a person sometimes, and though they are not as bad as Shirley’s family it might be helpful to push a bit of self reflection!

Churchview · 06/05/2024 10:05

When I think of me at 42 and my mum at 42 we were worlds apart. The way our lives and the world has changed, if they made it now Shirley would have to be older.

In my version Shirley would be 55. I'd choose Joanna Scanlan to play her.
