Hallway. Is panelling dated already?

Victorian terraced.

Was thinking of doing hallway like this (random google pic)...

I really like things like coving and dado rails.

But is it dated already? Or is it classic?

I can't decide what to do.

I feel it needs something more that just a lick of paint.

I'd say it depends on the house.. an older house (1930's and older) then I would imagine it might look lovely. However on a new build or my 1980's modernish build, I think it looks a bit 'try hard' as it's clearly aftermarket.
Then again I'm sure plenty of people would say my house looks naff... if you love it, then do it, it's your house!

Ticktapticktap · 05/05/2024 16:46

It's fine - it'll be at least 20 years before it's dated again, didn't it only come back into fashion about 2 years ago??

I think it looks really good

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 05/05/2024 16:48

No it's not dated but it is starting to look ubiquitous- so many people doing it on the cheap & painting it grey or dull blue so that they're starting to look like ikea-kits

SBHon · 05/05/2024 16:57

Grey is a bit dated but I wouldn’t say panelling is. But at the end of the day it’s your home and you should decorate it in whatever way makes you happy.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 05/05/2024 16:58

without sounding like a snob i think it's abit over done. i really like the framed wall paper panels though

It wouldn't be grey. I hate grey.

Any other ideas for something striking?

MySmallWoo · 05/05/2024 17:03

I was also considering a mid rail with anaglypta wallpaper on the bottom half?

It’s not dated, it’s classic on the right period. However I think you need a large hallway to pull it off. It’s a bit ubiquitous but most interiors are.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 05/05/2024 17:31

Who cares? If you like it have it. What's with this "dated" business?

Chewbecca · 05/05/2024 17:33

What sort of house is it?

TheGreatestSecretAgentInTheWorld · 05/05/2024 17:35

I think it looks lovely. I love anaglypta too, but it can get bashed.

fantasmasgoria1 · 05/05/2024 17:37

It doesn't matter about what's popular etc it's what you like that counts.

Sheknowsaboutme · 05/05/2024 18:00

Panelling looks great in the right house. A period house. Looks absolutely terrible in a council house, new build or flat.

Womanofcustard · 05/05/2024 18:09

Yes great ideas, I love panelling and anaglypta. However in pic 2, I think the bold flowery wallpaper is ott.

Lily193 · 05/05/2024 18:14

It's definitely considered 'dated' but why are you concerned about trends - if it suits your house style and you love it then go for it.

MySmallWoo · 05/05/2024 18:15

It's a 1920s Townhouse, 3 floors.

I'm leaning towards the anaglypta.

I wouldn't have patterned wallpaper above. Just paint.

Because I don't want to spend time and money on something that's gonna be seen as really naff very soon.
I have quite a quirky house and I don't usually do things that are 'trendy' so I think the fact that everyone's doing it might put me off but it does look nice sometimes!

I like the anaglypta in dark shade but you'd need a big light hallway to pull it off. Panelling would look better if you wanted a lighter colour. I'm struggling to imagine the anaglypta in a lighter shade.

I have Panelling in my (large) Edwardian hallway. It's not on the stairs or landing. We very been here 20 years and people have often commented on it. I recently painted it satin white with Egyptian cotton greige above. Looks brilliant with some classy prints in white wood frames.

ZenNudist · 05/05/2024 19:03

I've googled and think anaglypta would look good for 1920s although it's originally a victorian trend.

DrJoanAllenby · 05/05/2024 19:07

Faux panelling is naff.

MySmallWoo · 05/05/2024 19:14

I like this type that's sort of panelled. I think it works with lighter colours too.

I think that either panelling or anaglypta would look good, especially in a 1920s house.
The issue about whether it is either dated or too overly trendy would depend largely on which colours you use, I think.

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 05/05/2024 19:27

Lovely ideas op go for it

curlupandvanishforever · 05/05/2024 19:31

@MySmallWoo I have a 1900s home and we just had the hallway and landing panelled

I was a bit worried panelling is overdone and everyone is doing it but I’m so glad we did. It feels like we have restored some of its original character.

And at the end of the day, it’s my house and I love it despite what anyone else thinks!
