Hallway. Is panelling dated already?

Victorian terraced.

Was thinking of doing hallway like this (random google pic)...

I really like things like coving and dado rails.

But is it dated already? Or is it classic?

I can't decide what to do.

I feel it needs something more that just a lick of paint.

Classic - if it’s in keeping with the era of the house.
Anything currently fashionable will look dated in a few years anyway.

I'm going to go with the wallpaper with a dado rail.

It's easier to remove and a little bit different.

We are house hunting at the moment and lots of newer homes have faux panelling. It looks so shit - wonky, badly done, cheap and just looks a bit too “tik tok” - especially when done in nurseries and young children’s bedrooms.

In older homes - it looks absolutely incredible!! (When it’s done well!)

Ah, well it's not a council house in that sense as there's only 2 of us in the road that are housing association. The rest have always been private (not sure how these 2 ended up being council owned, maybe they bought them as they needed more 4 bedroom properties?)

often yes, that’s what it is. My friend lives in a new build that is housing association.

Yh I think the amount of money to make it look right would probably be too much.

Yea I'm leaning towards that

I have something similar in my hallway but it's all just plain white. It's 25+ years old now but I love it.

Grew up in a 1920s house and we had the original anaglypta below a dado rail in the hall and up the stairs. So perfect for your house OP

Fashion is no substitute for style. If it has style, it will look amazing whatever happens to fashion.

Any other ideas for something striking?

Our hall is exactly the same as the one in the second picture in your OP. This is what we've done (hall, stairs and landing).

To be honest, I don’t know why they said council house, although many I guess wouldn’t have had panelling, but I agree fake paneling in a building it would never have been in doesn’t work.

A council house has never had panelling. It really looks hideous, especially teamed with tat from B&M.

i dont care if my comment is insulting

This is a house from 1910, most of the houses in the street have original features but this was bought by the council in the 70s and they ripped most of the original features out :(

I guess it's easier to install bog standard stuff to maintain.
