My guerilla action in the supermarket

I got caught out by stealth shrinkflation buying a 200g butter which I expected and thought was the usual 250g butter has always been.
Miffed when I got home and realised I'd got 20% less butter than I thought.

Shelf ticket price in Asda displayed price, pence per kg and weight as the 250g - misleading...
So the next week I told a member of staff the shelf ticket wasn't right for the product anymore and they said they'd change it.

Over a month later it is still on display and being advertised as the false cheaper price.

So I took matters into my own hands. I'm officially old.

Well done and thanks for posting here to motivate others to do the same.

You gave the shop a chance to correct their error but they failed.

But the real culprit is Yeo Valley who are running a scam by any other name by reducing the quantity by 20%.

What had been the price when it was sold as 250 grams?

This is a case for Trading Standards to look into.

Ok so in Asda's defence....
You probably told the member of staff who is responsible for shelf filling.
The member of staff for changing shelf tickets will be a completely different person.
Shelf filler person has probably never met shelf ticket person because they work at different times.
That's how retail is unfortunately.

Yes and supermarkets employ people who do what they are told and stay in their lane. Hence the tests they do upfront. If you answer those as if you have initiative you'll fail.

'You can do the digital equivalent by leaving a review online. I usually check the reviews on Ocado before buying a new item and it's often been an eye-opener. X says 'Don't waste your money, this meat was inedibly tough' and Y responds by saying 'It's clear from these reviews that some people don't know how to cook this cut of meat/didn't really appreciate what they were buying/are as thick as pigshit*'. Brightens an otherwise dull task!'

I often check the reviews on the Iceland website before buying because their food is so hit or miss. And things they advertise as 'spicy' are either not spicy at all or hotter than the sun! Cajun chicken skewers I'm looking at you Confused

"I have been known to correct punctuation and grammar on those notices which get put out when work's being done, and occasionally on ads on trains, but this is a new branch of the activity. Thank you for introducing me to it."

Are you a teacher? I like to think of you all now as a special branch of teachers going all round the corner marking notices, adverts and ticket prices with a red pen.

Is it bad I'm tempted to do some mumsnet tourism and go and see your modifications in the flesh (I'm local).

As a side note, I saw recently in Lancaster sainsburys that the 6 pack of babybel cheese was cheaper for 2 than the 12 pack. Very non-environmentally friendly but we go through those so fast I wanted the cheaper version!

Bigcoatlady · 06/05/2024 07:25

Excellent work @PoochiesPinkEars

More generally the 200g blocks of butter piss me right off and I refuse to buy them on principle. Morrison's own brand is definitely still 250g.

They have been 250g as long as I remember so when I am baking I know exactly where to slice to get 125g/100g/50g etc. loads of recipes call for 250g of butter. You could get caught out with this nonsense buying just one tiny block of butter and have to make a sad small cake.

I’m also surprised the op hasn’t realised she got the math wrong

That's the risk, you cock up with the maths and the supermarket can rightfully take issue with you.

You aren't an authorised member of staff so you should flag the concern by taking a photo of the pack, a photo of the incorrect packaging and send it / email it to the address on the supermarket website, so the correction is made in all branches, not take the law into your own hands, and get it wrong!

did the whole supermarket stop and give you a round of applause and was there a Guard of Honour as you got to the checkout?

Report them to trading standards.

ChillGill · 06/05/2024 10:12

Nice one, OP. 👏

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 06/05/2024 10:17

Well done OP! V bad practice by Aldi

My guerilla action is against sexist doormats!

A trendy gift / home wares / posh tat shop near me has a stack of novelty doormats outside, one of which I view as nastily sexist. Every time I go past I flip the top two over so that only the undersides show.

That’ll larn’em.

RandomMess · 06/05/2024 10:25

@PoochiesPinkEars were off to the dump (aka recycling centre) I am tempted to pop into Asda and see if your corrected labels are still there!!

Curlygirl06 · 06/05/2024 12:28

A window shop near me had "Keep the drafts out" signage outside. Thinking I was going mad, I checked with someone else that it should be "draughts", then went and told them. They had to redo all their expensive signs!

booktokbear · 06/05/2024 12:44

We'll all be spotting Mumsnet corrections in the wild now, off to Asda later so will do my bit!
Though my near teen ds will prob die of embarrassment! 😂

Ooh. That's made me feel all weird. I said it out loud twice and shuddered. Did you buy the offending article in some type of artisan market, or a big grocery store? I don't know why I'm asking; they need to be told either way!

I bought it from Carrefour - it's a local brand called Bayara, they have just redesigned all their packaging across the whole range and it now appears on several of their grinded ground spices.

No. Just impatient of sloppy standards in grammar and spelling.

There used to be a (now unfortunately defunct) financial website where on one board people persisted in referring to 'overdraughts.' Every time it had me muttering 'OverDRAFTS, dear. OverDRAFTS.'
