My guerilla action in the supermarket

I got caught out by stealth shrinkflation buying a 200g butter which I expected and thought was the usual 250g butter has always been.
Miffed when I got home and realised I'd got 20% less butter than I thought.

Shelf ticket price in Asda displayed price, pence per kg and weight as the 250g - misleading...
So the next week I told a member of staff the shelf ticket wasn't right for the product anymore and they said they'd change it.

Over a month later it is still on display and being advertised as the false cheaper price.

So I took matters into my own hands. I'm officially old.

Anyone going to mention the calculation mistake though 😅 Sorry OP. I salute you for doing this though, well done lol

Ah yes, it's £11 isn't it? My maths is shite so I'd not noticed. Either way, it's a hell of a jump in price per kilo.

I used to work at Sainsbury's, and I absolutely knew who the shelf stackers and the ticketers were (not all of them, obviously) If it was ever pointed out to me, I'd take the ticket and get it sorted, via supervisor if necessary. It would bother me too much just to leave it. I worked on checkouts, but you'd often get stopped on your way back from break etc with questions like this.

Well done, OP, by the way. In these straitened times most of us need to know the price per unit. One of the reasons I stick with Ocado is because on their website you can change the order to show goods by price per 100g or per kg or each or whatever unit makes sense, either high to low or low to high, as well as by total price per item, high to low or low to high. Most other supermarkets only seem to give you the option to list by total price per item, which makes it far harder to compare the unit price. Of course a 10kg bag of rice is going to be more expensive in total than a 1kg bag, but it might be a lot cheaper per kg, so worth investing in, if you can store it and have the funds.

I’m also surprised the op hasn’t realised she got the math wrong

You can do the digital equivalent by leaving a review online. I usually check the reviews on Ocado before buying a new item and it's often been an eye-opener. X says 'Don't waste your money, this meat was inedibly tough' and Y responds by saying 'It's clear from these reviews that some people don't know how to cook this cut of meat/didn't really appreciate what they were buying/are as thick as pigshit*'. Brightens an otherwise dull task!

*All right, I've never actually seen that, but it's been strongly implied at times!

I once tried to leave an online review on some fillet steak that I said was dreadful. I wasn't an arse about it, didn't swear, and I tried to be constructive. The supermarket wouldn't publish the review.

Ironically, I'm now a tester for that same supermarket and get products to test for free.

DrJoanAllenby · 04/05/2024 13:05

I had this with Lidl over something with a price and 150g but the item was only 100gm.

I took photos and sent them via Facebook messenger and they sorted it out quickly.

Testina · 04/05/2024 13:06

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I’m going to agree with @Needmorelego that this is rubbish management in store rather than deliberate scam though.

The reduction is size with same price - and certain no “new - smaller pack!” logo 🙄 is the scam… but the old shelf label is unintentional crapness.

I love your work though!!

albatrossjoe · 04/05/2024 13:18

You're my kinda gal @PoochiesPinkEars, bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻

PoochiesPinkEars · 04/05/2024 13:50

Haha, yes maths isn't correct - ah well, better 10p over. Maybe it'll irritate someone else enough for them to red pen my work, I'll enjoy checking the shelf when I go.
I salute you @DrJoanAllenby your intervention was far more effective than mine!
I think the frame of mine I was in meant whipping out a pen seemed more achievable than the maths than the admin involved in anything more.

Well done you!

A few years ago I saw a price ticket on something in my local Tesco that was offering 3 items for £1. Individually they were 32p.😂

Oh dear, you really don't understand how that comment works, do you? OP posted a very believable story, with photographic evidence.

Better luck with the next meme you attempt.

AmyDudley · 04/05/2024 14:09

Hmm - I get your annoyance, I just think if you are going to make a point of criticising their figures, you need to get your (very simple) maths right, otherwise you look like a bit of a twerp and undermine the point you were trying to make.

Yes! I've seen those and even one where the twinpack price was a few pence more than two singles.

PoochiesPinkEars · 04/05/2024 14:29

@AmyDudley oh well, I'll accept my fate for the error. It was a scribe error rather than a calculation error, but it's all the same outcome.
Their calculations were right to be fair, just didn't match the product cos the weight was incorrect.

I was less bothered by their maths than the sneaky smaller quantity, for some reason it feels less honest of yeo valley to do that than just own the fact they are an expensive brand.
All Asda did was fail to keep up to date with their labels

Newcrocs · 04/05/2024 14:44

Lurpak and Anchor have also stealth reduced their block size to 200g I noted the other day when I was in Tesco, they look visibly smaller and obviously price has stayed the same.

Well done OP, even if the math isn't quite right 🤣

P.S it's £1.90 on Clubcard prices atm 😉

PoochiesPinkEars · 04/05/2024 14:52

OoooOOOooooo good to know others have followed suit.
Love butter on my toast, love it, so need to watch out.

OP posts:
Oldraver · 04/05/2024 17:56

My OH got really peeved over the reduction to 200g and is obsessed over it

If I buy butter on offer he will always ask it's weight 🥱

PoochiesPinkEars · 05/05/2024 08:59

@Oldraver if I kept being asked I think I'd be tempted to buy the small ones until he offered to do the shop. 🤣

@RainbowZebraWarrior aw shucks. I recommend it as a hobby, it's a good mix of righteous and rebellious which are both important to exercise.

I have been known to correct punctuation and grammar on those notices which get put out when work's being done, and occasionally on ads on trains, but this is a new branch of the activity. Thank you for introducing me to it.

useitorlose · 05/05/2024 13:38

Could you do something with the tub of cumin powder I bought today, which is labelled 'freshly grinded'? 😧

Ooh. That's made me feel all weird. I said it out loud twice and shuddered. Did you buy the offending article in some type of artisan market, or a big grocery store? I don't know why I'm asking; they need to be told either way!

I would love it if you did that and also signed it with your current user name. 🤣🤣🤣 like an artist. I would appreciate that if I saw it. 😁😁😁

Good work, OP!

Now go and mention it on their Twitter feed…….

BestIsWest · 05/05/2024 14:45

I pointed out a similar error on beans to a Tesco staff member and he looked terrified and said ‘I’m not here for the maths’. Wish I’d had a sharpie on me.
