Honest opinion on my painting

EthnoBotanist · 03/05/2024 12:52

I have no art experience at all, I didn’t even really do it at school (which was nearly 40 years ago!) During lockdown I started drawing a bit. This is a picture of a house we used to live in where DD (21) was born. I am wondering whether to give it to her as a (minor/supplementary) birthday present or card. However, I am worried it’s no good and it would seem like I thought I was accomplished. Honest opinions please.

Its fine but even if it isn’t to your eyes its your daughter, surely she will appreciate the fact you made it and it’s sentimental and more meaningful then some generic card.

bilbodog · 03/05/2024 12:58

I love it! Carry on!

Imicola · 03/05/2024 12:59

I'd love to receive a gift like this, particularly with the sentimental value of the subject!

I think it's lovely and a very thoughtful gift.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/05/2024 13:01

I have no knowledge of art and no skill in it, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt but I like it. It’s charming. Whether or not it is ‘good’ in art terms, I think you should give it to your daughter. Most people love gifts that people have spent time and effort on.

EBearhug · 03/05/2024 13:01

I think it would be clearly recognisable to her, but would be better without the cars if possible, though that would probably mean a whole new picture. Also, the windows look very blank and unfinished - a light colourwash could help there. I think she'd love I though.

If you enjoy it, but don't ferl confident, you could go to local classes? Ad Ed availability has diminished massively in recent years through funding cuts, but various art classes still seem to be available round here.

Peacelily001 · 03/05/2024 13:01

I love it OP!
What a great gift for your daughter x

HoHoHoliday · 03/05/2024 13:02

I would love to receive this as a card or print gift. It's a good picture anyway, but I'd love the connection to it being my first home, and mostly I'd treasure it because my mum had created it for me.

Merrow · 03/05/2024 13:02

Honestly, it's something I'd appreciate from my mum now as I'm approaching 40, but I would have been utterly bemused by it as a gift at 21. I was less sentimental then than I am now, and had less awareness of my mother as her own person with her own interests! It probably depends a lot on your daughter's personality. In hindsight I wasn't a particularly mature 21 year old.

LookAtMyTinyGameBoy · 03/05/2024 13:02

It's a personally meaningful subject, handmade for her by someone she loves, and personally, I think you have a unique and appealing style. She might not want to display it if it doesn't fit the aesthetic of her room decoration, but I think she'll probably cherish it.

DrJonesIpresume · 03/05/2024 13:03

It's adorable. She'll love it.

Amx · 03/05/2024 13:03

I would leave the cars out but think she'll love it.

NuffSaidSam · 03/05/2024 13:06

I like your drawing style.

I don't know whether your DD would appreciate a picture of the house she was born in though. I don't think I would have done for my 21st. I suppose it depends on how long you lived there and her memories of that time.

CourageCamille · 03/05/2024 13:08

I like it! It reminds me of Mr Benn...

Yes! Was going to post this too!

CountryShepherd · 03/05/2024 13:11

Love it! Actually my DD painted me a similar style of picture of my new house and I was delighted - really thoughtful and totally original.

MsFaversham · 03/05/2024 13:11

Disagree about the cars as they give depth to the image. It’s lovely, OP.

murasaki · 03/05/2024 13:13

It's cartoony (agree re Mr Benn) and I like it a lot. Go for it.

I'd be well chuffed with myself if I'd drawn it.

financialcareerstuff · 03/05/2024 13:14

I think it's sweet. Only thing I'd say is, how big is it? A4 or smaller size, it's a nice keepsake, that can be eg in a photo frame on a desk/shelf..

If it's really big, framed painting style, then that's a bit more ostentatious, shifting her decor choices in her room/house, and making it seem like it's a serious artwork versus, a beautiful, personal gesture....

Talipesmum · 03/05/2024 13:14

Scampuss · 03/05/2024 13:09

Yes! Was going to post this too!

And me! If it’s anything like the streets I’ve lived on like that, you’d better not leave the cars out or she might not recognise the place - always chock a block!

I think it’d make a lovely card as it is.

QueenAnn · 03/05/2024 13:15

If that was done by mum (or anyone) of our old house if frame it and put it on the wall. I think it's great, I really like your style, it's really modern. You are very talented!

I like it! It reminds me of Mr Benn...

Came here to say exactly that 😂

DrJoanAllenby · 03/05/2024 13:16

I like it but what about adding more depth like this one by adding greenery around the edge?

ManchesterGirl2 · 03/05/2024 13:19

I think that's lovely for a card! It's decent quality, no need for perfection when it's for friends and family.

thepastinsidethepresent · 03/05/2024 13:19

I really like it and I'm sure your DD would too!
