Honest opinion on my painting

I have no art experience at all, I didn’t even really do it at school (which was nearly 40 years ago!) During lockdown I started drawing a bit. This is a picture of a house we used to live in where DD (21) was born. I am wondering whether to give it to her as a (minor/supplementary) birthday present or card. However, I am worried it’s no good and it would seem like I thought I was accomplished. Honest opinions please.

I like it but as others have said. Lose the cars. To say you have no art experience, it's pretty good 👍

LookAtMyTinyGameBoy · 03/05/2024 13:21

I wouldn't add anything — colour washes, greenery, any of those suggestions. Half the battle with painting and drawing is knowing when to stop. The choices you've made about areas left white are part of what gives it your unique style IMO.

I love it. Love the style, fabulous

It’s good! I like the cosy feel and agree that it has Mr. Ben vibes.

You should keep drawing. You’ll only get better. Great hobby to have.

EthnoBotanist · 03/05/2024 13:24

Thanks for all your responses. DD is quite mature for her age and very attached to (the idea of) where she was born.

@financialcareerstuff it’s quite small. Definitely not big framed picture size and would never want it displayed on a wall anyway.

Good idea to add greenery @DrJoanAllenby but it’s quite an urban street with very little green around.

Honestly, it's something I'd appreciate from my mum now as I'm approaching 40, but I would have been utterly bemused by it as a gift at 21. I was less sentimental then than I am now, and had less awareness of my mother as her own person with her own interests! It probably depends a lot on your daughter's personality. In hindsight I wasn't a particularly mature 21 year old.

This. I think it is absolutely charming, but you should keep it for her until she's a bit older, maybe for her 30th?

I'm 35 and would be so tocuhed to receive gift like this from one of my parents (especially since one of them has since passed away). But at 21, I wouldn't have been mature enough to appreciate the heartfelt sentiment behind it.

It’s charming @EthnoBotanist
Give it to her!

Im en rout to re is the see Family in London
In the War Great granny lived in Mayfair
A house behind theirs was bombed
The house used to be a place with many parties and fun Pre War

Great Gran painted ( completely amateur) the blitzed party houses - called “ Where is the happy party now?”

I’ll take a pic later and show you
I LOVE them, but my brother finds them depressing.
The Cars in time will “date “the picture, so definitely keep cars in there!

oakleaffy · 03/05/2024 13:30

Edit - intermittent internet on train made gobbledegook of my post .

Bumblebeeinatree · 03/05/2024 13:32

I'd maybe crop the bottom a bit. Could you put a bit of colour or detail in some of the windows if it doesn't make it not look like the actual house. Coloured blinds partly dropped? A few flowers on the bush? To make it a bit more lived in.

It does look good though. Atrocious parking by the car on the right.😀

unicus · 03/05/2024 13:33

It looks lovely. Just as good as illustrations on my DCs books

WaltzingWaters · 03/05/2024 13:36

It’s a lovely style. I’d say give it as a card, then she can decide if she’d like to display it, rather than feeling obliged to if you have it to her framed.

effoffwind · 03/05/2024 13:37

A lovely personal thought out gift
So much nicer than random tat
Well done you 💐

Awumminnscotland · 03/05/2024 13:38

I like looking at it. I'd like more unexpected details to catch my eye. I'd like the windows to show me things. Good though OP.

I wouldn't be waiting 9 years to give someone a drawing! Anything could happen in that time.

Sounds like she might love it OP, and if not then its no big problem.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 03/05/2024 14:39

It’s cute and charming, and if it was reversed and my ds gave it to me I’d be delighted 🤩

Bignanna · 03/05/2024 14:43

I don’t think it needs anything adding a or changing. It’s unique to you, and I like your style!

Dolallytats · 03/05/2024 14:44

I love it!! I always draw birthday cards, I don't think I'm any more than OK at art, but my family love them....and my new neighbour nearly cried at her hand drawn 'welcome to your new home' card😊 I've also made a picture for my sister of her and her children's favourite animals. My nieces and nephew actively look forward to seeing what I've drawn for them!!
I think your daughter will love it.

I graduated to little animal figures in clay now, which my family also love....they're all a bit wobbly, wonky and rough around the edges, but they're loved😊

Dolallytats · 03/05/2024 14:46

My 2 latest cards for my grandson and mum's birthday next week.
