Do you open the door of the dishwasher when cycle finished to improve drying or do they dry better with the door closed?

I normally leave it closed but someone told me that they open it to let the steam out.
My dishwasher is a 20 year old Bosch.
Any thoughts?

I open the door (when I remember) as the steam escaping means it dries faster. I think.

MiddleAgedDread · 03/05/2024 11:52

Mine is a fairly old Bosch and I always used to open the door thinking it would let the steam out but my mum reckoned it's better to keep it closed and I think she's right! That only works if you don't need to unload it straight away though! I often leave mine on the delay timer overnight so it's had 2-3 hours "standing" with the door closed before I empty it in the morning and things tend to be pretty dry.

We have quite a new A rated Bosch and on the economy program (which is about 4 hours long) it opens the door automatically with about 40 minutes left on the cycle.

The "eco" setting on mine opens the door automatically at the end to allow air drying, you do have to then leave it a while though - and never shut it again before emptying and then it just doesn't dry.

I no longer use the eco setting as it doesn't clean as well.

RollsnRocks · 03/05/2024 11:54

I guess opening the door immediately lets the steam escape but the heating also escapes.

Mine has a door which opens automatically to complete the drying process.

Cotswoldbee · 03/05/2024 11:55

Ours pops open at the end of the cycle with a puff of steam.
Contents are still hot but dry apart from where water has collected.

2-Year old AEG.

StarlightLime · 03/05/2024 11:55

Some of them open automatically when the cycle finishes (mine doesn't), so I assume opening is best?

flipent · 03/05/2024 11:56

Open it, but only enough to let some steam out and retain as much heat as possible - then close it for a while.
Everything comes out virtually dry (only water in the annoying bowls I brought with a very deep curve on the bottom side!)

Aaron95 · 03/05/2024 11:59

Depends on the cycle you use. Ours on Eco never gets hot so the dishes won't dry unless you open the door. If you put it one the express cycle it gets to about 60°C so the dishes dry quickly even with the door closed.

RollsnRocks · 03/05/2024 12:02

Eco cycles didn't exist when our machine was manufactured 20 years ago 😀

Instructions in my new dishwasher yesterday says if you leave the door open, it will help the dishes to dry better

Same

Yes

Toooldtocareanymore · 03/05/2024 12:12

we replaced our dishwasher earlier this year, and it says in instructions that when its finished it beeps to allow you immediately open door to assist in drying, it says in instructions they recommend you leave dishes in with door open for at least ten minutes after cycle has finished.

tobee · 03/05/2024 12:13

Open it to cool the items and then unpack.

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 03/05/2024 12:15

Ours opens itself. Then beeps about 20?? Minutes later to say it's done.

NisekoWhistler · 03/05/2024 12:24

Open it, rest a tea towel on the door with the majority of the tea towel in the dishwasher. Close the door for 30-60mins you'll be amazed how dry the pots are.

Yes I do this! But I find after only 15/20 mins it's done

CrushingOnRubies · 03/05/2024 12:27

Dishwasher does this automatically when it's stopped so it's thing

Elebag · 03/05/2024 12:30

Open the door. It's a modern cheapest in the range Bosch and it's shite. Doesn't even beep or have a flashing display when it finishes. Just goes dead.

LetItGoToRuin · 03/05/2024 12:36

I open the door asap after the cycle has finished, but I understood the benefit to be not so much to aid the drying, but to limit damage to the glasses caused by them being in the heat for too long. They go all cloudy.

Our new tumblers are lasting much better than the old ones since we started opening the door.

Bichette · 03/05/2024 12:39

We were told by the kitchen designer to leave the door closed as escaping steam can damage the underside of the worktop. 🤷‍♀️

Sandwichgen · 03/05/2024 12:40

I open as soon as it finishes, give cups/bowls with an indent a shake to get the mini puddles of water out, then leave door a tiny bit ajar while drying finishes

Yes mine too.
