Colonoscopy diet and prep help

Evening all. Put on chat for traffic whilst thinking should have put in AIBU but that scares me over there!
Got the procedure Friday so have eaten non whole meal, and white only versions of things today. I feel like my FIL who doesn't do fruit or veg and only eats white bread.
I feel quite bloated and wonder if I've eaten too much bread and fretting that it won't "clear".
I am veggie so can't really do the chicken broth / consommé soups and shredded plain chicken and rice they suggested.
Will I be ok with white toast and a bagel and eggs tomorrow morning / early lunch then nothing but liquids and the prep? Will I feel faint from all the poo and no food ? Guessing sickness bugs are the same hit with no guarantee of keeping fluids down so fingers crossed I'll take my new book, podcast and a duvet into the bathroom
And camp out. Questions I may?

  • Vaseline on bum or sudocrem or?? For soreness
  • Apple juice or an energy drink (lemon?) to drink
I've heard to make the prep cold/ hold my nose/ alternate with lemonade but the woman who gave me the prep was very doom and gloom about how bad it tastes ! All tips welcome 🙏 thank you so much

@Franticbutterfly I did this but could still taste is. That said I didn't try it without the straw so could have been worse - I just don't know but will not be trying it bareback 🤣

Put a towel on the bed to reassure you and try to get a good night’s sleep.

I found that drinking it through a straw was best, and holding my nose too.

I did this as advised on here. I also popped in a chewing gum immediately to take the taste away. Moviprep.

Just to say I hope today goes welll

BettyNora · 03/05/2024 10:32

All done. Way better than I expected. I had sedation but it was a very small private unit (I'm doing it for a clinical trial ) so they tried to persuade me gas and air would be ok. I held for for sedation but tbh it didn't seem to do anything at all. I felt ok but not woozy or in any way drowsy. It was a very small dose of fentanyl which I had a large one of previously when my shoulder was dislocated and they were popping it back in. That time I was out like a light but the clinic said they only do very very mild. But maybe it just took the edge off. I'm home in bed now with toast. DH has gone to work which I don't think he was supposed to. But I'm sure small Betty dog will look after me. Especially if there's toast. I'd definitely say drinking the prep and the nausea after dose 2 was horrid but once the poo started to flow it was fine and that bit was not even that bad. No real mad urgency to go and I used metanium and sudocrem to protect my bottom and that's not sore either. Couple of small polyps removed but consultant said he was sure they'd be benign and my family history wasn't a factor really as my parent had developed cancer in 60s. Thanks for the hand holds. I was worried about being called a poo troll tbh and not getting replies but this is what Mumsnet is amazing for. Support and advice so thank you from the heart of my bottom

Glad it all went ok for you, OP

Thank you for this thread! I have my first ever colonoscopy on Tuesday, the day after tomorrow. I am 48, iron deficient, with a family history of CRC.
I want the prep to go well, but I am most concerned about findings (not physical discomfort).
I realize I eat a lot of fiber, seeing the diet no-nos (all things I love to eat). I guess it'll be egg salad on toast for me for lunch tomorrow, and then the prep - Plenvu. Anyone have experience with that one?

No but buy chewing gum etc if it tastes yucky

I had Plenvu. I knocked it back holding my nose and through a straw and cold. Dose one was fine although I felt nauseous. Dose two was more difficult and I felt really sickly after that one but once the pooping started it wore off. I would do it again knowing how it was tbh so don't be too worried.
The diet I had for three days was no booze, all the white soft bread, bagel and scrambled egg, oven fish and mash (took breadcrumbs off) and a ready made cauliflower cheese one day. I was really craving fruit by the end of the three days.
I know you'll be worried about the results but it really is best to get the testing done and catch anything quickly. I'll give you a virtual hand hold

Thank you, @justasking111 and @BettyNora ! I am definitely craving fruit and veggies already; I might have some applesauce at breakfast tomorrow.

I have put a lime-flavored soft drink to cool already and have to make sure I have plenty of ice cubes by tomorrow morning.

Thanks from me too. Got my first colonoscopy on Wednesday afternoon. Plenvu. Not looking forward to it,but finding this thread really helpful.

Fernticket · 05/05/2024 17:40

Hope all goes well for you @Slavica

justasking111 · 05/05/2024 19:06

Honestly you'll be fine. I expected senokot type gripes but there was zero pain.

LemonySippet · 05/05/2024 19:22

I had Plenvu for mine too last summer, it's so interesting the different prep instructions given. I went private for mine but was given no info about what diet to eat beforehand and in fact had to ring the hospital beforehand to check which schedule to follow as my prescription didn't say. So I ate a normal diet right up until I started fasting because I knew no better but still was marked as excellent for my prep!

Oh and I only got the 6pm prep down, the 6am one i threw straight back up again despite my best effort to have a stomach of steel 😂. I'll never eat anything mango flavoured again.

The procedure itself was fine, I'd do that a million times over the prep 🤢. And even then, it's only actually drinking it that's hard, once it's down it was just boring sitting on the toilet. It wasn't like normal diarrhoea, I had no stomach pains and no soreness, it was just like someone had pressed an 'evacuate all contents' button that I could do nothing about. You can do it!

Slavica · 05/05/2024 20:21

"evacuate all contents" button, @LemonySippet 😂

My DH had a similar experience to you, I don't think he got all of the morning prep down, nor did he change his diet until he took the first dose of the prep, and his was rated excellent, too.
He recommends I use a night pad in case of accidents overnight (I think from bitter experience).

I love mango, and hope this won't ruin it for me. It would be really sad if I were to go off my DH's excellent mango lassi due to this.

blue345 · 05/05/2024 20:35

I had to throw a glass of lemon barley water away yesterday due to moviprep flashbacks. Not sure I'll ever enjoy a Swizzell's refresher bar in the same way again either (which may be a good thing...).

Slavica · 06/05/2024 16:20

The first dose of Plenvu is down. Armed with the knowledge of many mumsnetters before me, I drank it ice cold, through a straw aimed at the back of my mouth so I didn't have to taste it. Now sipping the rest of the water (some I already had, alternating with the Plenvu). So far, so good.

BettyNora · 06/05/2024 18:34

@Slavica you'll be great. The description of a tap going on is perfect. It's t on toilet and have the strange sensation of peeing but form the back. No cramps at all. Strange

This, it's quite an odd feeling. Although there's a definite relief when you're finally at the yellow liquid stage (sorry if TMI)

Slavica · 07/05/2024 04:26

There is no such thing as tmi on this thread, @blue345! I agree, @BettyNora , there are no cramps, and the urgency is not such that I couldn't make it to the toilet. I did feel week last night, though, so I mostly spent it in bed with a hot water bottle and my Kindle. It was better once I took a paracetamol for my headache - I assume from hunger in the afternoon - and everything else was more manageable.
I slept well from ~10 to 5, now up again but not due to start dose 2 for an hour yet.
Good luck with your clear liquids and prep today, @Fernticket !

blue345 · 07/05/2024 05:46

Good luck for today, just think of that post procedure meal! (Honestly the procedure itself is much easier than drinking the prep..).

Slavica · 07/05/2024 14:17

I am back, eating a very yummy pesto burrata and mortadella sandwich.

I was sedated, so I slept through the procedure. From the way I feel, I never would have known that my colon had been thoroughly examined!
The only snag was the fact that I have difficult veins, and this time it took them four tries to get the IV in. They were all very nice and apologetic, but this is a longstanding issue of mine. There were no findings and my next one will be in 5 years, due to family history.

I'm a bit woozy from the propofol, but it doesn't compare to being drunk. I was able to walk and take public transport home on my own without a problem.

BettyNora · 07/05/2024 17:47

@Slavica lucky you. I was wide awake and didn't feel like I'd had any sedation but did have a painkiller so maybe that meant they gave less sedation to see how I coped first? Who knows ...

blue345 · 07/05/2024 18:52

Slavica great news, you will enjoy normality and nothing hanging over (or out of...) you tonight!
