do you judge other people's recycling boxes...?

Walking to work this morning, it's recycling day, one box was full, I mean full, of Smirnoff red bottles. Another of McEwans extra. Another had a lot of soft drink bottles and coke cans.

You can't help but wonder...

No but I do judge DPa glass recycling box full of peroni bottles but then I think well at least it’s not Buckfast 🤣

ringoffiire · 30/04/2024 11:27

Only that so many people put the wrong things in the recycling and don't seem capable of following basic instructions. I don't particularly notice or care if they've had booze, what papers they are reading, etc.

I always forget to put my glass box out. A few weeks ago, I finally put it out, full of Christmas wine/champagne/beer bottles, the odd bottle of prosecco and a gin bottle that I'd had since summer and finally polished off.

I dread to think what people thought of me that day, I was rather embarassed 😳

BarrelOfOtters · 30/04/2024 12:05

TBF DH has a cold and I used up the rag ends of 2 bottles of whisky to make him a couple of hot toddies. So my recycling box looks like we've polished off 2 bottles of whisky in a fortnight.

It also looks fairly dodgy when I've made a few litres of plum brandy for Christmas presents. 5 litre bottles of the cheapest Coop brandy in a couple of weeks.

I think some people think anything with a triangle symbol on the bottom can go in, especially if there isn't a sticker with plastic recycling numbers listed.

Kalevala · 30/04/2024 12:40

Just checked an old kitchen bin I kept to grow potatoes. It's a number 5, which is recyclable at kerbside collections in my area.

Here in Ireland we have to trudge to the supermarket with all our cans and plastic bottles to get our deposit back. I went over today with a bag and got a whole €3.25 for them. I feel judged parading my bottles for the whole town to see so I can get back my measly deposit. It was far better when I could chuck them in the recycling bin and my pepsi max habit was between me and the binmen.

I am from Germany and love bringing bottles back for the deposit, it's also DD's highlight of a German holiday.

There is such a satisfying crunch for the single use small bottles.

One year we dropped our stuff back before driving home and a teen girl was there with two crates, she had collected bottles from a festival ground and made over €50.

Absolutely, I walked past a recycling box full to the brim with wine bottles the other day and definitely judged!

Neighbour had a recycling box full to the brim of the little tinned martinis and tequilas sold by Waitrose. At £ 3.99 a pop that was one hell of an outlay.

Jux · 30/04/2024 13:00

Our bins have lids so it's rare we can see the contents😢

Samsam23 · 30/04/2024 13:00

Only the people opposite who never break their stuff down so it's overflowing and then the wind blows the lid open and all their crap ends up all over my front garden. They have a lot of takeaways plus gousto boxes 😂

In the summer wine are usually full of bottles and cans, always have people over

mitogoshi · 30/04/2024 13:04

Admit it, doesn't everyone look?

We are a household of 3-8 adults depending on who is home, and who's boyfriend/partner/husband (depending on which) are staying. With 8 adults our box can be very embarrassing Blush

mitogoshi · 30/04/2024 13:07

I'll take a photo next week as all are coming for bank holiday.

longtompot · 30/04/2024 13:11

I don't judge other peoples but I do worry about ours being judged by the bin collection people.

FrenchandSaunders · 30/04/2024 13:17

When our adult DDs lived at home it was a struggle to drag the bin down the drive.

FiveTreeHill · 30/04/2024 13:19

No, I really don't care what other people eat and drink

I know alcoholics exist and it therefore it isn't a surprise to find someone maybe drinks more.

FurQuenelle · 30/04/2024 13:26

Our glass recycling gets collected every week. It's usually pretty full.

Last week we were away for a few days so the box was pretty sparse. I joked to OH that the recycling people would be knocking the door to find out if one of us had died.

Young couple down the road have their recycling box absolutely stuffed with premium cider containers. Our recycling is collected every week so they are getting through a fair bit. Doesn't bother me but humans are hard-wired to notice things.

user1497787065 · 30/04/2024 14:00

I call it 'Spot the alcoholic' morning when I walk the dog in my village.

It's surprising how much wine a couple in their 80s can get through in a week!

BirthdayRainbow · 30/04/2024 14:01

Wonder what? If I was to notice a lot of alcohol bottles I'd think I hope they had a good party. Sometimes I notice food boxes and think that looks nice to try.

user1471556818 · 30/04/2024 14:04

My 60th last week you would have judged me harshly .
I had 1 beer but my guests really made up for that .

DrJonesIpresume · 30/04/2024 14:07

We don't have glass recycling at the kerbside like that in our area, there are bottle banks in strategic locations instead, so I am blissfully unaware of my neighbours' activities in that direction.

Every fortnight and all the guests drink Smirnoff red exclusively.

I judge people who don't wash out their recycling bins or rinse their jars/containers. Seen some pretty horrible ones.
