Excruciating trapped wind?!!

Bunbum · 28/04/2024 21:55

A bit embarrassed to be posting this but I truly suffer with the most debilitating trapped wind and I’d like to know if anybody has any good advice on how to ease it.

It’s very strange, it happens A LOT (as in, multiple times per week) and typically occurs after I take DC to bed. I eat dinner any time between 3-5pm usually and take the kids to bed between 7.30-8pm. I lay there with them for around 20-30 mins to get them off and then get up. It always seems to occur once I stand up from laying down for that short period, which is strange.

The pain though…. It honestly can be agonizing and I’ll walk around all hunched over. Sitting down does nothing, I often have to go to bed and find a laying down position that eases it.

I’ve tried teas but they don’t seem to work.

Really getting fed up of it and currently trying to make a little more effort in the bedroom and so going back to the living room hunched over clearly needing a good fart isn’t exactly sexy for poor DP!!!!

Might be worth noting (just to embarrass myself even more) I don’t burp… or should I say, I can’t burp. Never have been able to burp, so that may be why it’s such an issue…

Have you tried windeze?

Bunbum · 28/04/2024 21:56

Immediately regrets hitting the ‘post’ button 😅🫣

It's usually diet related? What do you eat or drink?

LakeTiticaca · 28/04/2024 21:58

Try Bisodol or sometimes sucking a peppermint can help.

Mrsjayy · 28/04/2024 21:58

Try just plain boiled water and lie down on your side with your leg across you.

Bunbum · 28/04/2024 21:58

@MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira I haven’t but I did try an over the counter liquid years ago which did nothing.. have you any experience with it? I’ll be sure to try it and completely forgot about that to be honest so thank you!

I'd look at your diet, are you eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables? Reduce or cut out all UPF's, and take some probiotics

ehb102 · 28/04/2024 22:01

My IBS (trapped wind) was a symptom of an under active thyroid. Got medication, it went away. Buscopan was the thing that hit it best. You only get 10mcg doses here but in another country I got 30mcg. That sorted it!

PuppyMonkey · 28/04/2024 22:01

Get on all fours then lean forward onto your elbows so bum is sticking in the air (I know this sounds a bit rude) and that’ll usually get the farts out. Learned this from yoga! Grin

Start keeping a very detailed food& drink diary with times, also note when you go to the loo etc.

Then look for patterns.

Try lying down after other meals to see what happens.

Bunbum · 28/04/2024 22:02

@Nocturna I’ve quite often wondered if it is diet related. It can be particularly bad after eating a carb heavy meal such as pasta on a very empty stomach, i’ve noticed. Also, from one extreme to the other, if I have no carbs (salad for example - which I had for dinner this afternoon) sets it off… it’s almost like I need to find the perfect balance with the carbs and eat little and often. Letting myself get too empty and then eating a big meal is a no no and that trapped wind pain can settle in immediately after eating.

I've had my appendix out right before it burst, and that was less painful than trapped wind. My ex-husbands MIL was hospitalized for it so don't feel ashamed!

I can get it extremely badly, and opposite to what @Nocturna is suggesting, I'd say be careful regarding fiber as it's possibly a trigger.

  1. Yoga position for when the pain happens - on all fours then rest your head on the ground with bum on the air. Yeah it's undignified but helps the gas bubble along.
  1. Anything high fat - even a glass of milk I can't usually handle. That's because fat is slower moving through the digestive tract, so it's a trigger for me. For you it'll probably be different as we have different gut flora, so an elimination diet might be worth a go.
  1. If very bad, senna laxatives help very quickly.

I used to have problems like this when I had a large (12cm) dermoid cyst on my ovary. I think it was pressing on my bowel.

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 28/04/2024 22:11

Posted too soon, yeah try peppermint oil but also see a GP so they can have a feel and check all is as it should be.

newnamethanks · 28/04/2024 22:12

Couple of Extra Strong Mints.

Lenax · 28/04/2024 22:14

Incorporate more veg into your diet slowly and gradually, not every veg will be for you, but I find small amounts of tomato (with skin), mushrooms, broccoli, peppers help keep things ticking over

BananaLambo · 28/04/2024 22:14

I’m like this when I eat onions. I call myself a Gassy Giant.

CultOfTheAirFryer · 28/04/2024 22:16

Simeticone tablets helped me a bit. Everyone told me it was diet, but endometriosis surgery pretty much resolved it (for a while, anyway).

mikado1 · 28/04/2024 22:16

Try apple cider vinegar before your main meal. Mix a spoon with a few ounces of water. I was going to say yoga pose also plus hop rotations while on all fours.

Bunbum · 28/04/2024 22:18

@JadeSheep thank you - definitely want to try different positions because I know that getting into a certain position does tend to ease it (slowly) so I will try that out!

@Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes very interesting as I did have a large ovarian cyst once and since found out that I am prone to them unfortunately so i’ll be keeping this in mind to ask GP if everything else fails!

I used to get really bad trapped wind in my 20’s. I used to do a handstand for a minute or lay on my back with my legs in the air ‘riding a bicycle’ - the all fours and leaning forward is a good idea too. I think it’s to do with your bum being higher than your tum!😂

Sadly I can’t do any of those moves now so it’s just windeze for me! But also look at diet too. I have IBS so lots of fruit and veg makes me windy. Both trapped and escaping.

Lillers · 28/04/2024 22:18

I’m a fellow non-burper! It can be SO uncomfortable, and probably does contribute to the trapped wind feeling.

I’m dairy intolerant so any dairy makes it worse, but also think I might have a mild wheat intolerance too because that can also be a trigger. Honestly just avoiding the triggers is the best way to deal with it for me. Since I’ve been pregnant I’ve found the all fours bum in the air pose a lifesaver as well!

Bunbum · 28/04/2024 22:28

@Lillers Not like I go around asking but I never come across fellow non burper! So welcome! Will definitely try keeping the food diary.

I'd get checked over by the GP, but if that doesn't reveal anything try the FODMAP diet and gradually reintroducing foods.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 28/04/2024 22:32

Strong peppermint tea. Pukka three mint is good.

Eggs can bind me up. Too many bell peppers can cause me gas.
