Excruciating trapped wind?!!

Bunbum · 28/04/2024 21:55

A bit embarrassed to be posting this but I truly suffer with the most debilitating trapped wind and I’d like to know if anybody has any good advice on how to ease it.

It’s very strange, it happens A LOT (as in, multiple times per week) and typically occurs after I take DC to bed. I eat dinner any time between 3-5pm usually and take the kids to bed between 7.30-8pm. I lay there with them for around 20-30 mins to get them off and then get up. It always seems to occur once I stand up from laying down for that short period, which is strange.

The pain though…. It honestly can be agonizing and I’ll walk around all hunched over. Sitting down does nothing, I often have to go to bed and find a laying down position that eases it.

I’ve tried teas but they don’t seem to work.

Really getting fed up of it and currently trying to make a little more effort in the bedroom and so going back to the living room hunched over clearly needing a good fart isn’t exactly sexy for poor DP!!!!

Might be worth noting (just to embarrass myself even more) I don’t burp… or should I say, I can’t burp. Never have been able to burp, so that may be why it’s such an issue…

I also cannot burp!

Where is the pain? Dh had this every now and then but it was his gallbladder. Although that was fatty, carby foods that caused it like a big meal of fish and chips, curry plus naans.

Buscopan useful. So is Colpermine a type of peppermint oil that is in thick gel covering so gets released in the gut not stomach.

Heucherarowan · 28/04/2024 22:42

Could easily be food intolerance. I've been there with the daily painful wind. Turns out onions and garlic aren't my friend. Or wheat.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 28/04/2024 22:43

Tried windeze once. 'Relieves trapped wind by gently dispersing gas bubbles' well my body definitely missed the memo on that one. Gentle my arse!! I think I spent the entire day farting and burping after taking one of those

OrangeBlossom28 · 28/04/2024 22:45

DD1 also can't burp. There is a medical name for it which I've helpfully forgotten. She's also lactose intolerant and can't digest sugar that well either. If either her or I get trapped wind, a hot water bottle on the lower abdomen works really well.

Ponderingwindow · 28/04/2024 22:45

I have this problem when I eat too many vegetables. I know that is exactly the opposite advice most people give. Just the pattern I have observed for myself.

sparkling water helps me. Again, they typically say to avoid carbonation, but it helps me. Gingerale or ginger beer if it is particularly bad.

Peakypolly · 28/04/2024 22:54

I can't burp either, but I only have problems with trapped wind on holiday.
It doesn't matter what type of break I'm on; beach, activity, city break etc. or if I have flown, driven or cruised. I'd love to know what causes it, but in the meantime, Windease does do the trick.

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 28/04/2024 22:56

In hospital, after an emergency c-section, the midwives gave us hot peppermint cordial for this - Schweppes make it. Also, avoid eating fruit at the end of a meal. Eat it as a snack or as a starter to avoid trapped wind.

Thulpelly · 28/04/2024 22:58

I relate OP - I’ve been to A&E not knowing what it was. The pain can be unreal.

Carom seeds/Arjwain are amazing for a speedy relief - mix half a teaspoon with salt and warm water and swallow (they’re really bitter so don’t chew for too long).
Not sure why they work but they do, better than any over the counter remedies for me.

CosyMosy · 28/04/2024 22:59

I am also a none burper!! And always have terrible wind. I have literally never voluntarily burped in my whole life. I’ve let out an accident burp maybe… 8 times in my life

mintich · 28/04/2024 23:00

I have exactly this problem! I've never been able to burp so get trapped wind a lot, so very interested in the replies!

TheSnakeCharmer · 28/04/2024 23:02

Are you eating any foods with artificial sweetners (low fat yogurts or sugar free gum/sweets etc?). Certain additves have very windy side effects.
Could you be lactose intolerant? It's not unusual for women, in particular, to develop it in their forties onwards. I am now lactose intolerant and it can definitely make you very bloated.

Get on all fours then lean forward onto your elbows so bum is sticking in the air (I know this sounds a bit rude) and that’ll usually get the farts out. Learned this from yoga! Grin

was coming on to say this! Definitely works 💨

Caswallonthefox · 28/04/2024 23:04

I have found that no spicy foods helps.
If I do have an attack I curl into a ball round my pillow and rock backwards and forwards cursing the pain until I'm comfy enough to hunch to the toilet and wait for something to happen.

twoandcooplease · 28/04/2024 23:05

Coming back to read this thread when my ds goes back to sleep. I suffer all the same as your op. You aren't the only one, I have been to the doctors so many times about not being able to pass wind. I find it unbelievable that I can't get out a simple fart or burp and the pain that comes with is enormous

Sympathy!! Xx

momager1 · 28/04/2024 23:05

another non burper here! Never have burped in my life. Also get the trapped wind and it can be very painful. Yoga downward dog works sometimes. A very strong peppermint tea also helps. With the burping issue, I am a bit embarrassed to say this, but my husband burps me like a baby. Still don't burp but gas bubbles up and it sometimes helps

Candleabra · 28/04/2024 23:06

i had this earlier in the year. I think it was too many vegetables. They just produce loads of gas in your tummy.
I cut right down (not out, obviously) but I find if I overeat it causes bad wind, particularly in the evening.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 28/04/2024 23:06

Have you tried deflatine it's amazing also if you google releasing trapped wind there are exercises you can do to help release it which I have found helpful at 2 am when I'm in pain and can't sleep 🙄

Berlinlover · 28/04/2024 23:10

I had issues like this when I had fibroids.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 28/04/2024 23:12

Charcoal tablets.
Works wonders.

Defender90 · 28/04/2024 23:16

Worth a check over by the nurse or GP but lie on your left side, hitch your knees up and gently rock back and forth. Always helps me. Advice came from a nurse.

Rinsby7 · 28/04/2024 23:19

I had this and it turned out to be a sorbitol intolerance, do you chew gum?

LauderSyme · 28/04/2024 23:23

Sympathies OP, trapped wind can be astonishingly agonising. I hope some of these remedies prove helpful.

That is classic gallstone pain you're describing, have you been checked out?

Jeminii · 29/04/2024 10:32

Sounds like typical reaction to food intolerances or the joy of IBS which can be mild or severe and come on at any time in life!

I had very similar to you OP and my tummy has just gradually got more and more intolerant of various foods/situations and stress as I've got older.

Colpermin peppermint tablets really help me but try the FODMAP elimination diet to work out your triggers. Some foods /drinks that I used to be fine with, I absolutely can't tolerate anymore, like dairy which is a new one for me. It's very annoying!
