Good 'old' epic films

Sunday afternoon, pissing down, just had a big dinner. Looking for a sort of epic type film. Can't face Dr Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia or Gone with The Wind but am feeling like I want something sort of nostalgic for us all to watch.

Thinking, (but seen too much) The Great Escape, Awakenings, Rain Man, Harry Potter(s).

NOT The Sound of Music or Mary Bloody Poppins.

Suggestions please!

I was going to say Lawrence of Arabia!

My go to films are
Casablanca
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Labyrinth

Could you go down the Rio, ice age or dare I say it a good old Bond film

RubyGemStone · 28/04/2024 16:25

ooh strong suggestions. Can only watch Breakfast at Tiffanys with my complimentary beehive and my hair is too roastie smelling for such a look.

Not sure I'm ready for the stirrings I will get if I watch young Redford, and certainly won't cope when he's with Newman.

Hmm, decisions.

Ben Hur

PuppyMonkey · 28/04/2024 16:26

I thought you meant proper Epic films OP, but I’m not sure you do. Ben Hur, The Robe, Demetrius and the Gladiators etc…? Biblical epics….

I was going to say The Sting! Same issue as BC and the SK, though.

Where Eagles Dare? Young Clint and mature Richard Burton. Wonderful tosh.

North by Northwest.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2024 16:32

Actually, any Hitchcock film.

The Vikings?

Classic film noir - Laura.

pinkgown · 28/04/2024 16:33

I saw "The Eagle has Landed" for the first time the other day and thought it was very good.
Zulu
( a bit of a Michael Caine theme here, LOL)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2024 16:35

Another terrific Richard Burton film (much, much better too) is The Spy Who Came In From The Cold.

Big Michael Caine fan here too - Get Carter is terrific. Not for children, though.

[Edited because I misread The Eagle has Landed for Where Eagles Dare - too many eagles!]

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/04/2024 16:38

All About Eve ("Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night ")

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 28/04/2024 16:48

El Cid
The Ten Commandments - proper epic films both
Also Zulu - lost count of the times I've watched that.

The Big Country. Jean Simmons, Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston. What not to like??

loverofpants · 28/04/2024 16:51

Singing in the rain

Crazeland · 28/04/2024 16:53

Bit more modern but I recommend

Firefox with Clint Eastwood

Sgtmajormummy · 28/04/2024 16:58

The Man who Would Be King.
Very 1970s Michael Caine and Sean Connery (with Burt Reynolds’s chest hair and sideys).
