Do you believe some people have the gift of being able to talk to spirits?

I'm a non believer because nobody has ever convinced me otherwise. Even if the medium is correct on a lot if things how is it even possible for them to communicate with spirits? I'd love to hear people's opinions. This has come off the back of visiting a very well recommended so-called medium who was clutching at straws all the way through and in the end I left early & she didn't charge me!

I try and be open minded about things.

but yesterday someone I follow on instagram posted an segment of one of her readings and I was gobsmacked by how generalised it was. She absolutely believes in it. And so I was curious to see it. But the lady is just blatantly fishing for information and going off what she can see in the room. I was surprised that she was so taken in by. And it was expensive!!!!

No. They’re for the vulnerable/naive/easily brainwashed/those with very little in their life, that are searching for something. It’s similar to religion in that way.

Well someone with a thick black moustache came through in my reading. I know nobody with a thick black moustache, so it would appear that either she's a fake or I have a connection to Adolf Hitler 🤣

Or Tom Selleck. You don't have connections to the YMCA do you? 😂

queenofthewild · 27/04/2024 17:26

My grandmother was obsessed with this nonsense. She used to follow some well regarded mediums around the country.

She proudly came visiting one day with messages from the spirits predicting the future. "Charles will never be king. The spirits say it will be Andrew and he will be an excellent king". That aged well.

User1979289 · 27/04/2024 17:28

No, see James Randi's work - he proved they were Charlatans repeatedly.

fairysarereal · 27/04/2024 17:30

Yes my sister sees alot but no she cant talk to them she can also tell you if something is going to happen but keeps it to her self very gifted but also very quiet.
And my son sees spirits he cant talk to them but he can hear them sometimes.
We keep it to our selfs people will think they are mad otherwise lol.
But none of us believe in card readings and all that crap.

idreamoftoddlersleepytime · 27/04/2024 17:33

Yes! I have this gift. I spoke to a bottle of whiskey last night and then drank it.

TwilightSkies · 27/04/2024 15:28

Yes. Genuine mediums etc are a tiny minority but they do exist.
Most of them don’t charge, or charge a very small amount.
They do it to help people.
The fakes (of which there are many) give the real ones a bad name.

They do not exist.

Because we're not supernatural beings. We're apes. And when we die, we die. No spirits no souls nothing.

Oh my god, yes 💯

I accidently stumbled across one of those "tarot reading" threads.
It was such bollocks.

I posted asking if everyone had changed their usernames, because its very easy to search your other posts.
Apparently I was being "negative" and told to go away

The funny thing was every so called "reading" was just Barnum Statements.
Like:
you have a tendency to be critical of yourself"
No shit Sherlock!

oh I saw that! “Can you tell me if I should leave my husband?” “Ooh you have drawn the death card and should bury him under the patio immediately!”

What an utter crock. These people are charlatans. 🤬

Ah the Mumsnet echo chamber strikes again.

Yes I know a couple but genuine ones are very few. The ones I know are very selective of who they tell as well.

Yes of course they are 🙄.

😬

I know this is an anonymous forum, but I would still be very embarrassed to talk such rubbish on here.

Genuine ones. Lol

EG94 · 27/04/2024 17:48

Yes I think people can. I have been to some shit mediums but one who is superb. She had my grandad and he said her names x and she fills my heart with joy. I did not tell her my nans name as I always call her nan, on fb she has a made up name; there is no possible way she could of researched what she said before I met her.

secondary to this, I have had people come through to me. I’m by no means advance so I don’t talk and chat but I’m shown things whether that be smells, colours, items or made to feel a pain or discomfort which usually indicates what they passed with. It’s a really strange thing to happen and I have no control over it. It comes when it comes.

for me spirituality is like religion. I do not believe in god but I believe someone who tells me they exist because no one will tell me what I have experienced didn’t happen.

what I really dislike is the disrespectful attitude to those that believe. So what if they do? They aren’t harming anyone and they’re taking comfort. Leave them to it

Bananadramallamas · 27/04/2024 17:48

Nah, it's nonsense.

Evanted76 · 27/04/2024 17:50

Yes, I believe some people can communicate with spirits. There are fraudulent mediums out there but there are genuine ones too.

After my son passed away, I spent the whole of lockdown doing nothing but researching the afterlife and researching the existence of consciousness after death. I read books, watched documentaries and pored over scientific papers. I previously wasn't aware all this evidence existed, because I hadn't done the research.

So in answer to your question, yes. If you're interested, there is a non profit organisation that carries out scientific tests on Mediums and Mediumship called The Windbridge Institute in Arizona. They use triple blind peer reviewed studies and their findings are very interesting and available online.

WittiestUsernameEver · 27/04/2024 17:54

Funnily enough none of the "genuine mediums" ever won James Randi's $million yet...

I’m sorry to hear that your son passed away.

You are however, exactly the sort of person that these people prey on and you are vulnerable to them.

Aussiegold · 27/04/2024 17:54

Nope

"They use triple blind peer reviewed studies"

Link to 5 if these triple blind studies please.

Hélène79 · 27/04/2024 18:13

Nope, and I think mediums and clairvoyants or whatever they choose to call themselves are part of one of the biggest con industries going, often targeting very vulnerable people.

Riapia · 27/04/2024 18:22

People are more willing to believe that which they wish to be true.

yellowlupins · 27/04/2024 18:25

No, I don't believe, but I am fascinated by the idea, and I definitely don't look down on people who do, even though I do feel that this belief could in some cases make them vulnerable.
To believe in people communicating with spirits I'd have to believe in spirits, and therefore the afterlife, and that would open a whole other can of worms, because I am not in any way religious either.
So it's a NO from me, but I'm happy to listen to or watch things concerning the occult for entertainment purposes.

No, but I do think some individuals are very talented (if you can call it that) cold-readers.
