The uterus is tiny, so why is there so much blood?!?

When not pregnant or recently pregnant the uterus is the size of a walnut right? So why is they so much fucking blood every month. I don't understand how it can all fit in?

Me neither .. I hate periods with a passion and if they'd let me have a hysterectomy I'd get one

samestyle · 26/04/2024 17:41

More like a size of a pear pre children, ovaries about the size of a walnut

Thehalls191 · 26/04/2024 17:43

And they told us in school in was a couple of teaspoons 🙄

I think the blood always looks like more than it is. Isn’t the average loss a few teaspoons? Also I remember being taught that your uterus is the side of your thumbs and first fingers in a triangle shape🤷🏻‍♀️

Wallabyone · 26/04/2024 17:46

I think the couple of teaspoons thing has recently been disproved, and I personally think I bleed an awful lot more than that. I actually feel drained of all energy for three days of my period. I also hate it, and since I had children they have got even heavier.

Icanseethebeach · 26/04/2024 17:47

Fresh blood is created used to ‘push through/out’ the lining of the uterus. It’s not just the blood which has built up at the start of your cycle which is expelled.

Mairzydotes · 26/04/2024 17:47

I've wonder that too. It mustn't just be the lining, as I was led to believe, it must be full to capacity, and expanded some months.

BrownSauceOnBeans · 26/04/2024 17:47

Anyone with a mooncup will tell you it’s more than a few teaspoons…

@Thehalls191 right?. LIES! Lies!

honeyfox · 26/04/2024 17:49

I often wondered about this when I struggled through lockdown with a fibroid that needed several operations to remove! I could not believe what came out of me.

Ah, that makes more sense

Interesting, I didn't know

Quite, I used to use one and on days 1 and 2 would overflow an entire cup every 1-2 hours. Each on is the size of a walnut. A man came up with the teaspoons theory for sure

Blimey, when I tried one it was like a scene from all creatures great and small. Two teaspoons my arse.

Roll on the menopause (naive I know)

Same

Even back then I was like that's BS.

I know there's discharge mixed in but even so

anyonesellinganark · 26/04/2024 17:55

I thought it was the size of your closed fist?
And yes, a couple of teaspoons my arse.

KittensSchmittens · 26/04/2024 17:55

I think the teaspoons thing was supposed to be the amount of actual blood lost wasn't it? And didnt account for all the other fluid that makes up menstrual blood? If that's true, I can't imagine why anyone thought that was a reassuring thing to say to teenagers clearly dealing with massive cupfuls of blood gushing out of them every month.

FriedGold · 26/04/2024 18:10

There is no way it’s a few teaspoons. No way. I gush a couple of teaspoons every time I stand up on heavy days!

somethingisnotquiteright · 26/04/2024 18:38

Possibly tmi but I passed a clot the size of my fist on my last period!! Baffled as to where it came from..

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 26/04/2024 18:41

I am glad it's not just me who is angry about being lied to about the teaspoons thing. Feels like we are told as girls basically it's nothing much to worry about, only a tiny bit of blood, shut up and get on with it. Fucking gaslighting us.

MoonlightMemories · 26/04/2024 19:42

I just looked this up out of curiosity, Google is saying 1-5 tablespoons (not teaspoons), which is apparently about 20-90ml, which sounds a little bit more correct. Agree with a previous poster who mentioned clots - those have got be quite a few ml per each one when we pass them. It certainly feels like you're bleeding out when they do!

Ocassionally I've had a really heavy period where I've passed mostly just clots and do tend to feel pretty dreadful when that happens vs a more "normal" period (I have PCOS so sometines I go ages without having one and wheb I do, they can then be much heavier).

Loveliesbhhfd · 26/04/2024 20:05

Google decidual cast...it's when the entire lining sheds in one go during a period...it's certainly more than a couple of teaspoons. I won't post an image on here as it's quite visceral

That's happened to me once or twice...some of the most painful periods I've had as it tried and succeeded to shed the whole thing in one go.

PugInABeret · 26/04/2024 20:47

Yes, the clots. Bastards. I've never had a whole cast but always have at least one or two that are larger than a walnut in themselves. I feel very cross today
