I'm a waxing virgin, and I want it all off. What do I need to know?!

Want to whip it all off downstairs, as a surprise for my DH as we're going on a romantic weekend away next week.

I have never waxed or been waxed and I'm worried, not only about the pain, but also the indignity (although I've had a child, so I guess that went years ago!) and also the regrowth uncomfortableness, particularly around the a-hole and the bits closer to the inner vulva.

Any tips, tricks or general advice?

It's not popular but when I'm in the middle for a Hollywood I just shave the lot off! Brand new razor, plenty of shower gel, take your time, jobs a good un! Honestly the itch is the same whether you wax or shave (if done carefully) so may as well go the pain free route. It obviously grows back quicker but who cares if you're only doing it for a special occasion?

Ellie525 · 26/04/2024 17:54

Am I the only one who doesnt get itching at all with hollywood regrowth?!

PermanentTemporary · 26/04/2024 18:02

I've been Hollywooding for five years. Honest truth, I did it after finding a white streak in my pubic hair and just thought, nah. Plus I was about to embark on a few sexual adventures. I enjoy it this way now. I know it's more unhealthy that's what I like about it

A week in advance is about right imo.
Go to someone who does hot wax and who waxes a lot. Ask around.
Take paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand- why not.
The level of pain depends a lot on the skill of the waxer. It's not a comfortable thing but it can be absolutely fine. I'd say go to someone you can chat to - I usually go into inappropriate gossip because distraction helps.
If they leave you alone with the aftercare cream, really slather it on.
I like Boots Tea Tree Facial Exfoliator on the area in between waxes to reduce ingrowing hairs.

Absolutely zero itchy regrowth ever here - one of the great benefits of waxing. In a similar situation I booked in for a leg and Hollywood, explained the situation, and the lovely waxer did it bikini-line to Brazilian to Hollywood so I could stop whenever I wanted. I went all the way and from being a bit in the sceptic-all-a-bit-wierd-but-special-treat-for-him I am now a convert.

(DH had mentioned it, I had said absolutely no, he never mentioned it again so I did it as a surprise. And I can assure you mine looks absolutely nothing like a child's parts, it feels amazing, and if your other half is an enthusiastic giver of oral I found it took things to an even higher level.)

Off to change my username...

I have a Hollywood. Have done for years. I get zero regrowth itch and have never had an ingrown hair. And I used to have quite a major bush - thick and coarse.

Haha yes agree on all fronts!

Have never thought my bits looked in any way childlike and definitely prefer the added sensation/sensitivity during oral and sex!

I understand why people might think its just a porn thing/men wanting it but among my friendship group its genuinely a preference bloke or no bloke 😅🙈

TheQuietWan · 26/04/2024 19:13

I had it done once and would never do it again.

It hurt.
It looked and felt weird.
The regrowth stage was SO itchy.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/04/2024 20:13

If you've never been waxed before I wouldn't do it before a special trip. You have no idea how your skin will react. I didn't know that I had double hair follicles so 'regrowth' happened straight away! My skin was a red angry mess with stubble... never, ever again.

I know that double hair follicles isn't common but you really need a patch test or something before going for it.

KatpissEverdeen · 26/04/2024 23:14

That's all been super-helpful - thank you.

I'm a bit on the fence now tbh (but at least I'm not on the fence having been waxed! Ouch!)

Each to their own but I don't want to look like a 10 year old girl. Men who prefer hairless, to me, that is weird.

tillyandmilly · 27/04/2024 00:18

Odd!

lovinglaughingliving · 27/04/2024 00:20

Hollywood - 2 paracetamol and nurofen before hand. Deep breaths and ask for comfort wax. An experienced waxist will be quite quick! IMO the middle bit hurts the most because the hair is thicker and more coarse there!
Good luck!

Deludamol · 27/04/2024 00:21

I'm another who had it once and will never again. It was horribly painful. It looked dreadful afterwards. It was sore, itchy, bright red, bumpy, and just grim. It wasn't even completely hair free either. There were patchy little hairs everywhere. Then I broke out in loads of spots. By the time it had calmed down, the hair had grown back.

Mysleepingangel · 27/04/2024 00:45

Get it done mid cycle, it's when it's least painful according to the fluctuations of hormones.

Have a shower before and exfoliate to soften the hair. (I've been doing my own Hollywood for years so know what I'm on about lol)

Talk or listen to something. The first time is painful.

I also let everything "air out' afterwards for about 12hrs or so. It helps with to let things settle.

Remember it's recommended to wait 24hrs after waxing for intimacy.

Enjoy!!

Jeannie88 · 27/04/2024 01:03

Thing is with waxing you need to let the hairs grow. I've tried all the methods but gone back to shaving, a couple of times of week. Waxing down there is painful and I found it didn't last as long as I expected. X

Gymnoob · 27/04/2024 01:15

Not all wax is made equal.

You want Lycon wax.

It’s well worth it. Shaving doesn’t work for me. Love a Hollywood. But no way would I ever get normal wax. Made that mistake once and once only!

MariaVT65 · 27/04/2024 03:07

The last time I got a brazilian for holiday, my DH didn’t even notice, because he doesn’t care. So never again.

My advice would be to get recommendations on somewhere to get it done, as i’ve had one lady who actually took my skin off. Very painful.

I would get a brazilian, not a hollywood.

But my advice is don’t bother at all. Def not as a surprise for your partner. It should be for yourself, not to please a man.

There's always one 🙄 having a hair free vulva on an adult woman is nothing like a child and there is nothing weird about preferring to touch and lick a smooth hair free surface over a coarse, hairy one. Oral sex without pubic hair in the way is a whole. Other. Level. I had no idea until I started removing hair. Try it one day and you'll see why your judgement is wrong!

I w never had any itching either.

I used to be professionally waxed for years and then I started using cream at home and now I just shave and use a Flawless trimmer
when it starts to grow through..

fettybord · 27/04/2024 05:56

Has anyone ever layered? A friend has had it done and loves it

fettybord · 27/04/2024 05:56

Lazered not layered...

Better than the dentist! Regular Hollywoods here. I’m in my 40s and been “all off” since my later teens, shaving when younger then moved on to waxing. I can’t remember what l looked like with pubic hair, when looking at myself in a mirror. And no, l don’t look like a child any more than a man who shaves his face looks like a boy.

There is good advice from most up thread. Ignore the cynics. The first couple of times are the most uncomfortable, after that it’s like a walk in the park. As some have suggested , a couple of paracetamol beforehand (l don’t bother any more) should sort you out. It seems to me that the body gets used to it. You are unlikely to get any regrowth itching after the first couple if times either.

Aside from that, don’t have a wax just before a period and don’t have sex the same day.

Benefits? Less sweaty in the warm weather and it can increase sensitivity in a lovely way!

Aside from that, it’s like hairdresser chat on all fours. Ooh, and relax, she’s seen it all before, it’s her job. And it’s likely she has the same from a colleague.

Enjoy your trip.

Go to a specific intimate waxing place. They need extra insurance for intimate waxing, make sure they have this.

Yes you need peelable wax. Used to be called hot wax years ago.

Exfoliate before you go, ask about homecare products or advice, definitely no hot baths, showers, hot tub for 24-48 hrs.

The main thing is to ask if they do this several times a day. If they are a genuine intimate wax therapist they won’t mind any of those questions.

Twilightstarbright · 27/04/2024 07:32

Regular Hollywood waxed here. I prefer it and it’s my body so I get to choose.

Hot wax and a decent salon. A lot of the issues mentioned on here are from beauty therapists who aren’t specialist waxers or don’t follow high hygiene standards (bitterly remembering the skin infection I got from the groupon wax in my early 20s). I don’t know where you are based but Strip in London are good and spend their days waxing so have seen it all before 1000 times.
