How many shops do you do a week?

unlikelychump · 25/04/2024 19:38

For the last 10 years I have done 1 a week either online or in Aldi in various phases. Never do top ups
We've just moved back to a spell of online and I have tried twice weekly for first time

I was spending 130 ish a week so reckon I could do £50 each of two. It seems a lot simple as I always get quantities wrong.

Any thoughts or tips?

We do one weekly online shops, no top ups. I find our delivery a bit disruptive so wouldn't want 2 deliveries. I have 2 young dc so we have to schedule it for when DH is home so one of us can keep an eye on the dc, the delivery often turns up early while they are eating dinner, or late while they're having a bath. When the youngest is in nursery I'll switch to daytime deliveries but then I still wouldn't want more than one delivery as I'd have to stay home for it and I wouldn't want to do that more than once a week.

3 supermarket shops for 4 adults always varying the shop.

unlikelychump · 25/04/2024 21:47

Interesting. The beauty of a smaller shop is it took no time to put away. And considerably less thinking time.

I go once a week to the supermarket at the start of the week then often a top up shop at the weekend if we need more bread or milk etc.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/04/2024 21:56

I’ve started doing just 4-5 days order at a time, stops fruit and veg going off and being wasted, and it means I don’t have to plan so many meals in one go. For the sake of £3 delivery charge it’s worth it I think.

mynameiscalypso · 25/04/2024 21:57

We do a 'big' online shop every 2/3 weeks and then top ups in between. Generally things like bread/milk/fresh fruit and veg.

ohthejoys21 · 25/04/2024 22:03

Unless we have a big dinner party I only ever top up, just get what's needed when it's needed. I might do a big Costco shop for basics. Me, dh and adult dd at home.

1 monthly online shop for pantry stuff , toiletries and cleaning.
1 monthly butcher delivery
1 shop per week for fruit, veg and eggs.
There are a lot of us.

coxesorangepippin · 26/04/2024 01:47

At least four shops per week, if not more

I go to different supermarkets to get the cheapest stuff, and we always seem to be missing that one thing

Beezknees · 26/04/2024 06:53

I go nearly every day. I live a 5 minute walk from 2 big Asda and Tesco super stores so usually go after I finish work to get what I fancy for that day.

Arrestedmanevolence · 26/04/2024 06:58

I've started to do 2-3. It's much better for fruit and veg. Fruit in particular gets eaten by day 2 or goes off by day 3 (raspberries seem to go mouldy as they hand them to you). In the past we always struggled for weekend food if the shop came early in the week.

AuntieMarys · 26/04/2024 07:24

I shop every 4 days. Meal plan religiously..it works for us, 2 adults. We share cooking and plan together.

taxguru · 26/04/2024 07:58

Twice a week, usually Monday and Friday and we rotate between 4 supermarkets so we can buy the inevitable BOGOF, 2for1, multipack/other offers rather than ever paying full price. Never do a "top up" shop as we never need to top up! "Fresh" fruit, veg, meat, pastries, cakes and bread hardly ever lasts more than a couple of days so twice a week is just about right. I usually find myself taking something back for refund, especially fruit/veg, if it's clearly gone off within a couple of days of purchase and the customer services desk never query it, so they must get a lot of returns/refunds, especially now that they don't have "use by/sell by" dates openly on show. Doing it twice a week also keeps the quantities/weight manageable - I'd hate to have to do "big shops" where you need a couple of trolleys - just too much hard work for me.

fieldsofbutterflies · 26/04/2024 08:09

Once a week for me. DH does his own and goes 2-3 times a week.

We're both neurodiverse with very different eating habits and schedules so it works well for us. I spend about £60 on average, no idea what he spends - but probably more as he buys a lot of ready meals.

UnravellingTheWorld · 26/04/2024 08:12

Twice a week. Big shop on Mondays and top up later on. Things like fruit and veg never last a week, even meat dates would be pushing it, and we're always running out of milk.

In any case, even if stuff DID last a week our fridge struggles to hold everything!

mydogisthebest · 26/04/2024 08:17

We don't have any sort of set routine. We go shopping when we need to. Sometimes we might go 2 or 3 weeks without shopping and other times we might go 1 maybe 2 times a week.

We have a good storecupboard and 2 freezers so have plenty of food. We only shop if things run out and for fruit and veg

HÆLTHEPAIN · 26/04/2024 08:23

I used to do weekly with top ups but ended up spending more than we budget, which is quite generous anyway.

Now I split the budget into 4 sections of 1st - 8th, 9th - 16th, 17th - 23rd and 24th - 31st of each month. I then do 2 shops in each of those times. So, 1st and 5th, then 9th and 13th etc. It works out every 4 days. And it means each period is the same, so no 5 week months etc. The only time it changes is if there are less than 30 days in the month but that’s a bonus rather than an extra.

It might sound complicated but it isn’t. We use YNAB so it’s easy to keep track. And this way we’ve saved money and food waste because we’re only planning for 4 days at a time. I also have a Sainsbury’s delivery pass which means I can order whenever I like.

Toomuch44 · 26/04/2024 08:32

I tend to do my shopping on foot - supermarket one minute from work and saves petrol. Also, DH had taken early retirement so sometimes pops in as part of his daily walk (and I think he enjoys a potter around as he rarely went when working).

For that reason we tend go go 4-5x a week. There's three adults and two cats. The shopping and unpacking bit takes me no longer than 15mins, so suits as I don't have to give up a large chunk to shop, no hanging around waiting for deliveries etc.

ClonedSquare · 26/04/2024 08:35

Two. We do one major online shop that comes on a Monday and then a top up shop on a Thursday or Friday for fresh fruit and veg for the weekend.

Meadowfinch · 26/04/2024 08:36

One. I try to meal plan and then stick to it, not because money is any tighter for me than anyone else, but by the time I've done school run, worked a full day, another school run and cooked supper, I don't have time for top-up shops. The nearest supermarket is 5 miles away.

I prefer shopping myself, to on-line shopping, because I can make sensible substitutions and not be left without anything for supper.

daffodilandtulip · 26/04/2024 08:44

I do three big shops about every ten days then a big freezer shop to fill it when needed. I stopped doing top up shops as it costs more than you think, and will just pop to the corner shop for milk and bread in between instead.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/04/2024 08:45

Once a week. I plan the meals for the week and just buy what I need. If I go off plan the food goes in the freezer. If food can't go in the freezer, for example fruit, it gets stewed so it can be put in the freezer! Consequently there's always something in the freezer!

I'm a single mom and with COL I can't afford to throw much away. The only top I ever do is for milk. Anything else... when it's gone it's gone.

pizzaHeart · 26/04/2024 08:51

3 people here: I, DH and teen DD. All shopping in person . One or two biggish shops and then 3 top ups on average, could be 1 or could be 5, some of the top ups are really small e.g just milk.
Different shops depending where are we are, as all shopping happens on the way from work/college/ activities. So basically no pattern at all.

treacledan71 · 26/04/2024 09:00

One big normally on line now per week as got a yearly pass. I do at least 3 top ups a week in Lidl. 6ft Teenage son goes through so much fresh stuff. If it was just my husband and I I would just eat what we had in. I started to spend a bit less on my main one so top ups don't come too expensive as you know what it is like when pop in a shop for a few bits. Odd week I may not do a weekly big one and just do small ones. We don't have many takeaway and this includes lunches for all. Glad you posted this as I thought about doing it but thought some people say only eat what they had and I was not normal. You know what it can be like on here. Glad to see people do them too.

Willmafrockfit · 26/04/2024 09:04
