I work in the kitchen as it's the nice spot...but maybe I should move rooms.

Anyway mindless snacking when working from home? Any ideas on how to stop boredom snacking.

I'm working on some long very dull documents so it's not as though I can chat away in meetings.

Lost a stone got another stone to lose....

Following. Just ate a Mars bar at my desk…

PinkFizz1 · 24/04/2024 14:05

I mean i guess the obvious answer is not to buy snacks in?

I have a packet of mints I usually have when I want to snack, which does help most of the time. But honestly it’s just easier if they’re not there altogether.

Cbljgdpk · 24/04/2024 14:05

I keep a structure like I do when I’m in the office; snack at 11am and lunch at 1. DH often makes my lunch so then that’s quite set too. Extra cups of tea if I’m wanting to snack out of boredom

OriginalUsername2 · 24/04/2024 14:09

Only eat at meal times, at the table. Be “nil by mouth” at work.

Get a fidget toy for the snacky hand, maybe? Sip from a bottle of water.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 24/04/2024 14:12

I don't not snack, but i've taken to having a tub in the fridge of pre cleaned and chopped celery/carrot and peppers, they'll keep for a few days in a tub.

cheapskatemum · 24/04/2024 14:15

I agree with @PinkFizz1, if you don't buy them, they're not there to eat. Also, as pp says, have some vegetable sticks handy &/or a piece of fruit. I'd add nuts (Tesco sell them in handy, snack-size containers), but that's because I eat a low carb diet.

GasPanic · 24/04/2024 14:17

Just never have any snacks in the house. That is what I do. Plenty of fruit though.

If your family revolt get one of those lockable boxes with a timer. Then set the timer so it won't open all day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/04/2024 14:21

I agree with @OriginalUsername2 , I’ve just imposed an all out ban on snacking during the working day. I eat 3 big, filling meals and other than that it’s water or coffee or tea all day.

Rosecoffeecup · 24/04/2024 14:24

Snacking is my worst habit, especially when wfh. I need to just not have the food in the house, but appreciate that isn't easy if you've got other people in the household

Can you get some low calorie stuff to have at prescribed times? Or try to drink a glass of water every time you think about snacking

arlequin · 24/04/2024 14:24

Don't buy any snacks... only way!

FayCarew · 24/04/2024 14:28

Put them out of sight. No biscuit barrel on the counter etc.
Don't buy them.
Have a boiled sweet or something instead if desperate. Not great for the teeth though.

beAsensible1 · 24/04/2024 14:28

Can’t eat what you don’t have. Dont buy in the snacks you don’t want to be eating and if you want them for treat buy one on a Friday to have over the weekend.

lots of nuts, crudite, tangerines for easy snacks. I do find snacks that are a bit more interactive are enjoyable when doing healthy.

i make my own kale chips, but that might be a bit much 😅

AutumnCrow · 24/04/2024 14:29

Have a fruit bowl next to your desk with some fruit and nuts you have to peel or de-shell to eat, like clementines, oranges, peanuts in shells. Or tomatoes, capsicums, jars of olives. And water.

Gets you out of the habit of eating absolute shite at a rate of knots, or twenty sandwiches a day.

theduchessofspork · 24/04/2024 14:32

Move away from the kitchen, it’s deadly.

Have set meal times, move to the kitchen for them, prep or lay out what you are having and when you’ve finished eating, leave.

Have a no food at the desk rule

Have Lego in a fishbowl (or stress toy of you choice) to play with.

Have a walk after lunch

MonsteraMama · 24/04/2024 14:35

If you can move out of the kitchen, do.

I put a mini fridge in my home office. I make my lunch and snacks for the day as if I were going into the office, put that food in the mini fridge, and don't allow myself to go near the kitchen all day. All I have is what I packed for the day, exactly like if I was going in to the office.

INeedNewShoes · 24/04/2024 14:44

This is unconventional but for me I've found I work really well and don't snack at all if I have a proper meal in the morning. I'm naturally more hungry earlier in the day anyway.

My ideal day looks something like this:

7:30am Small bowl of muesli and yoghurt (when I have breakfast with DD)

Take DD to school, getting back around 8:50

8:50 make coffee

9-9:30 deal with all emails and any admin

9:30 eat a second breakfast (or brunch, or whatever you want to label it)

10-3: work with no snacking apart from maybe an apple and cup of tea

My second breakfast is something substantial and always with a decent amount of protein like a mushroom omelette with spinach and tomatoes on the side or a crepe with cheese and spinach, or poached eggs on toast.

AutumnCrow · 24/04/2024 14:45

I'm thinking about getting a mini-fridge. Any recommendations, @MonsteraMama? I have very little space left amid the clutter of my 'home office area'.

AmaryllisChorus · 24/04/2024 14:46

I have non-stop cups of coffee then caffeine free coffee then redbush and fruit or herbal teas on the go. Keeps you hydrated. Needing the loo often means you don't get glued to your seat for hours on end, and the endless intake of liquid stops you snacking.

BarrelOfOtters · 24/04/2024 15:00

Just snacking on some shell on pistachios while drinking a cup of tea and thinking a dry martini would actually go rather well with them.

It's boredom - I don't actually need anything. At work there are rarely snacks so I can't.

You are all right, don't have the snacks in...

TulipBluebells · 24/04/2024 15:07

I make myself have snacks that require effort. Kale chips. If I really want a snack then I have to be arsed to go and prep the kale, get it in the air fryer, time it perfectly or it burns and is even worse than kale chips sound. A bowl is like 21 calories and I’ve burned more energy making them.

zippitydoda · 24/04/2024 15:31

I've eaten today
A banana
Some prunes
Some crackers
A packet of crisps
A chocolate bar
A chocolate biscuit
I work upstairs, goodies (baddies) are downstairs!
😫😫😫😫😫😫😫

well i suppose you are getting some exercise.

I've eaten 2 dates, a hunkette of Gruyere that needed using up, some shelled and unshelled pistachios.

My old neighbour used to take a piece of cucumber and slice it as thin as paper and soak the slices in a ramekin of vinegar. Afternoon snack.

I thought that was a bit hardcore, but now I'm in Generation Gimmer with a daily calorie requirement seemingly in the area of about 1000 cals, I can kind of see her point that it broke up a boring afternoon.

pelotonaddiction · 24/04/2024 16:17

I can only have a snack on my afternoon break which limits it nicely!
My new rule to myself is it has to be protein and/or fruit
