Neighbours keep using our bin!

Moved in about a year ago. Terraced houses.

Everyone has their bins in front of their houses, there's no front gardens so just outside their living room windows.

I don't like that, I think it looks awful.

Each row of houses has a back garden then an alley behind.

This is where you're supposed to keep your bins (had letters requesting everyone do this but we're the only ones who do)

So ours are the only bins in the alley.

Every few days someone is putting rubbish in our bins.

Random stuff like broken toys or an old TV bracket. And bags of rubbish.

DH just keeps emptying them onto the floor and someone takes the stuff so they know it's wrong.

On bin day we wheel the bin from the alley to the Avenue.

Last week, before we brought the bin back in but AFTER it was emptied someone put a load of babies nappies in there!

Again DH just dumped them out and someone picked them up.
The 2 incidents were at opposite ends of the Avenue so multiple people are doing it.

How do I stop them?

Fly tipping is a big issue. It's constantly being posted about in the local FB group. And every week there's mattresses and furniture and bags being left in the streets in the area. People on FB say it's cultural but it's just lazy and illegal!

Stick a notice on it.

kiwiane · 23/04/2024 21:37

There are gravity locks that only open when the bin is tipped into the lorry - I’d think about fitting one.

WarshipRocinante · 23/04/2024 21:39

Gravity bin lock.

VeraForever · 23/04/2024 21:39

Yep, gravity locks.

BindySoo · 23/04/2024 21:41

I'm going to sound thick but how do I get in them if they only open for the bin truck 😂😂

You have a key to open it normally 😂. Without the key, it needs to be upside down. Just check the design you buy and it’ll tell you how to work it.

I'm thinking the same. People keep putting their stuff in my recycling bin and while I'm glad they're using a bin, I don't want them contaminating my green one as I'll get a notice from the council

BindySoo · 23/04/2024 21:44

Ah right

I've just looked and they're like £35 each. We have 5 bins 😐

They aren't recycling properly. They just throw whatever in any bin.

Maybe DH could make something that goes through the lids of all the bins.

Alternatively, given we had a similar issue one time, we drilled a hole in wheely bin lid and a corresponding hole in the side.

We threaded a cable type wire through the holes and attached a padlock. Lock & unlock as necessary esp on bin morning.
Worked a treat.

WipeYourFeet · 23/04/2024 21:47

FIVE bins?!!

ToxicChristmas · 23/04/2024 21:51

Five bins! If the bin locks are too expensive, do as suggested above. Drill holes and use cheap padlocks and chain, unlock last minute/night before when the bins are out front.

I know. Its ridiculous

I’m guessing with five bins (I had to read that twice thought we were bad with four) putting them in your own back yard is not an option?
Otherwise gravity bin lock or a long hasp padlock and get drilling those lids. You used to be able to buy multiple keyed alike padlocks for £20 so one key would u lock all your bins for you. Saves faffing with multiple locks/keys.

Still cheaper than the fly tipping fine your DH is likely to get.

Why would my husband get a fine? It's not his mess. We aren't responsible for the rubbish other people throw in our bins.

What are we supposed to do? Just let the whole street use our bins?

And we have nowhere to put our rubbish?

That's made me really annoyed as we have never, ever dumped rubbish anywhere.

I won't even throw a wrapper on the ground. I hate littering

I'm going to get the cable locks and drill holes in. I think that's the best solution.

He's fly tipping I'm afraid, even though the rubbish isn't his.

If he's caught tipping it out of the bins, he'll be fined.

Unfair but true 🤷‍♂️

Well luckily for him no one seems to give a shit in the area about it as every street has rubbish dumped on it. It's disgusting.

FIVE bins?!!

We have 5 too...Council possibly adding yet another 'recycling ' bin shortly but cutting back pick ups too 🙄. We used to have this when we lived in a block of 4 flats, the others just didn't seem to care whos bin they used, what they put in them or even if they were overflowing. In the end hubby put locks on them, they were pricey but it soon stopped it

Ok as long as there are no cameras down there.

My sister lives in a borough where her local council has a 'Wall of shame' and they post CCTV footage on their website and FB page of fly tippers, encouraging people to come forward with names and addresses.

I hope you can sort the locks on the bins soon.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 24/04/2024 00:04

@Ladyprehensile Thanks so much for that idea. Will save me £££s instead of resorting to pricey gravity locks.

FIVE bins?!!

Not that unusual. We have four and there's now talk of a fifth for our region. (Currently, we have landfill, plastics, paper and garden/food waste.)
