Ring door bell owners.

I am asking for wider point of view and welcome opinions from all sides. Sorry if it's a bit long.
We have a neighbour who has recently moved into the house 2 doors down. We live in a bog standard neighbourhood, quiet all get along etc and our particular house does not have garage access because our landlord lets it separately. All our neighbours have garage access.
The new neighbour has a problem with not being able to park their cars near the front of their house on the road. We have had notes on the windscreen, them moving their cars at all hours to prevent others parking etc etc. It is annoying and unnecessary and previous talks have fallen on deaf ears.
My daughter's boyfriend reached the end of his patience today with it all and had a chat with them on their doorstep ,not in a nasty way but it is a situation which needs sorting once and for all.
They have a Ring doorbell and in the course of the conversation it became evident that this neighbour knows all our movements : when my daughter leaves for work, comes home from work, they figured that her boyfriend doesn't live here because of the times he is here etc, etc . I don't have a Ring doorbell and was slightly disturbed at the level of surveillance it provides..is this normal?

Some people (colleague at work) get notified on their phone every time so much as a leaf goes within 20 feet of the sensor. She knows the comings and goings of everyone in her cul-de-sac. Some folks are just nosy. The hi-tech equivalent of the curtain twitcher of the past.

Nicetobenice7 · 22/04/2024 21:01

That's just how it is now ..ring doorbells serve a purpose

Everythingtoseehere · 22/04/2024 21:05

aren’t there strict laws about personal data like this being stored? Didn’t think you were allowed to?

Ring doorbells tape everything thats the whole idea ...thevpolice love them

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 22/04/2024 21:08

I don't think it's normal.

Ours only picks up the perimeter we set - so we would only get a notification if someone stepped on to our driveway, or on the front paved area directly outside of our front door.

If he's not done that then it's out of order, and very creepy.

Not sure where you stand law wise though.

ViciousCurrentBun · 22/04/2024 21:09

Yep any movement and my ring doorbell records, amazing how many cats saunter across our drive at 3 am. They can also pick up what you are saying. I bumped in to a woman who I was friendly with when picking up our kids at primary school so many years ago. Had quite a catch up, she had big news as she got divorced, her Mum had died in an especially awful way and she had a hysterectomy. She went in to a lot of details , I realised after we parted that we were about 2 ft away from a ring doorbell that could have picked up every word.

Countrygirlxo · 22/04/2024 21:11

Yep totally normal! We got one after our car got broken into, we get a motion sensor alert if a car goes past or person walks past but if they come up the path it senses a person at the door.
I don't take any notice of my neighbours movements although I enjoyed hearing my neighbour miaowing back at my cat 🫢

AutumnBride · 22/04/2024 21:11

Mine only covers the area in front of my house, they're angled (the door bell and the additional camera) so they don't cover my neighbours either side or over the road unless they walk past the end of my driveway, which can't be helped because that's the main area I want coverage because of the way my house is designed.

But then I wouldn't want my phone alerting every time a neighbour left their house.

FabulousWealthyTart · 22/04/2024 21:11

I get that they have a purpose with security, crime prevention much like CCTV, but I feel a bit disturbed by our day to day lives being monitored by neighbours. Thanks for the different points of view,

It's an invasion of privacy.

AutumnBride · 22/04/2024 21:12

Your neighbours need a hobby.

DishOfSpoon · 22/04/2024 21:13

The owners aren't normal but other Ring doorbell owners are. Mine records everything but I only get alerted if my doorbell is actually rang. I can obviously watch the recorded footage and it will tell me when there has been movement so I can scroll through to the time it was activated. I can also watch a live feed too. I have a Ring doorbell camera along with other Ring cameras.

However, I have no fucking interest in what goes on on my drive or in my street. My camera does not cover the pavement, road or anyone else's property, just mine. Some people are nosy though so they used to be the curtain twitchers, now they use cameras.

Be aware it records sound too so even those people walking past will be recorded audibly.

Your monitors are set but the camera can see more ..left and right...ppl moaning they don't see anymore than the human eye so what's the difference

soupfiend · 22/04/2024 21:15

What was the purpose of the conversation anyway, to ask them to stop moving their cars around?

No, it's not.

FinallyHere · 22/04/2024 21:17

Agreed, the ring door bell isn't going anything that the neighbours could not do just by looking out their windows.

Not easy having this kind of neighbour but it's the people, not the doorbell

thedendrochronologist · 22/04/2024 21:18

We have ring and because of the angle we can't see our neighbours and made sure to set it so it didn't capture their doors

However I can understand this might not be possible

But you neighbour is being very weird but re-sharing this with you! Anything that is not to do with me I ignore!

The fact he has registered it, and remember it and recounted is a bit creepy!

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 22/04/2024 21:18

@Nicetobenice7 the difference is that people who don't set the correct perimeters are recording people's every move - the human eye doesn't do it. Nonhuman would be stood, poised and ready to stare, 24 hours a day.
What goes on outside of the boundaries of someone's property should be none of their concern - they certainly shouldn't be seeing the ins and outs and comings and going's of someone else's life. That's weird.

shash1982 · 22/04/2024 21:18

You can set the parameters for when you get a notification.
Ours is set close to the front door and window next to it.
Wouldn't want to be alerted everytime someone walked by or when neighbours are entering/leaving their property.
You can watch the live feed at any other time, but have no idea why anyone would bother unless to be nosey!

It's no different from staring out of a window ...thete are ppl like that curtain twitchers ...mine is set for my driveway only ...but the camera can see more left and right like I said before

Bloopp · 22/04/2024 21:21

Two of our close neighbours have them, I hadn't given it much thought but that is kind of creepy 😕 I'll have to watch what I say walking past their house now! Pretty sure I have slagged off their parking before 😂 I work shifts so sometimes come home very late and I can hear one of their phones going off as I walk past

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 22/04/2024 21:23

@Nicetobenice7 it's only no different to staring out the window if someone is staring out the window 24/7, camcorder in hand.

Floortile · 22/04/2024 21:24

Nicetobenice7 · 22/04/2024 21:15

The human eye doesn't record, save or share neighbours' movements amd identities with a major global business. (The human eye also doesn't record voice.)

Or in shifts, as our former neighbours appeared to prefer
