Ring door bell owners.

I am asking for wider point of view and welcome opinions from all sides. Sorry if it's a bit long.
We have a neighbour who has recently moved into the house 2 doors down. We live in a bog standard neighbourhood, quiet all get along etc and our particular house does not have garage access because our landlord lets it separately. All our neighbours have garage access.
The new neighbour has a problem with not being able to park their cars near the front of their house on the road. We have had notes on the windscreen, them moving their cars at all hours to prevent others parking etc etc. It is annoying and unnecessary and previous talks have fallen on deaf ears.
My daughter's boyfriend reached the end of his patience today with it all and had a chat with them on their doorstep ,not in a nasty way but it is a situation which needs sorting once and for all.
They have a Ring doorbell and in the course of the conversation it became evident that this neighbour knows all our movements : when my daughter leaves for work, comes home from work, they figured that her boyfriend doesn't live here because of the times he is here etc, etc . I don't have a Ring doorbell and was slightly disturbed at the level of surveillance it provides..is this normal?

Thanks all, I really appreciate the points raised.
I was just a bit worried that a neighbour two houses from us had such knowledge of our movements. My daughter leaves for work at 2am, I leave for work at 4am and it all registered with them.
I am not against Ring doorbells or parking issues, but I am grateful for the input..thanks.

@Nicetobenice7 it's only no different to staring out the window if someone is staring out the window 24/7, camcorder in hand.

The ring doorbells can see no more than the human eye ie someone looking out of a window

Someone looking out of a window 24/7 with no need to rest and recording what they see.

It's nothing like a human watching!

The huge difference is in where the footage is being saved and who could potentially access it!

Plus these cameras are slowly making people think that being constantly watched and recorded keeps you safe.

I have a ring doorbell and I know my neighbour's movements (at least, the ones you describe e.g. their working hours and who lives there/who visits.)

Because I sit in the front window working most days. Nothing to do with the camera, it's set so you have to enter my gate to trigger a notification.

SoupDragon · 22/04/2024 21:29

Does the human eye send an alert to your phone and show you video footage?

Ah, you one of those posters.

'It's no different, it's not different'

continues to ignore every example of why it is very much different 🙄

OP, it is bizarre that he knows your every move, I wouldn't like that at all.

Theunamedcat · 22/04/2024 21:34

I deliberately chose my boundaries carefully when I set mine up the last thing I want is alerts going off constantly

Sounds like they are nosey

EventuallyDecluttered · 22/04/2024 21:35

We have one and it is set to only start recording if someone comes up our drive and to only send an alert if someone rings it, however if you are watching live you can see people walk along the street and up the paths of the two neighbouring houses. Sound recording is switched off. I often go weeks without looking at any of it. It's handy for speaking to anyone who rings it when we're out, making sure the Amazon driver has actually delivered when the email says they have, that sort of thing. Unfortunately they can be abused though.

Kandalama · 22/04/2024 21:35

We have one and motion 10 metres away can be picked up if there’s nothing blocking it.
So yes they will know lots about you if they keep checking every ‘ding’ when there’s movement.

We park our car in the way so only pick up motion at the door as it’s very irritating and we only have one neighbour.

It’s also worth mentioning ring doorbells pick up noise aswell, up to about 6/7 metres away.

Your neighbours can also save the recordings.

Ours neighbours have cctv watching and listening into our single glazed kitchen diner.( that’s why we got the ring ) They can hear everything. The police do nothing. We are listed so can’t double glaze so we now live behind shutters in the dark.

I’ll be putting it up for sale soon.

Can’t stand all these cameras everywhere.

Nicetobenice7 · 22/04/2024 21:35

You can set the boundaries for alerts but the camera can see left and right ...more than the boundary

NannyGythaOgg · 22/04/2024 21:40

I live at the end of a cul de sac. My neighbours, nearer to the entrance, installed one. When it was first installed it covered the whole of the road. Every time I walked past I would get a notification that I was being recorded. I also knew they were being notified as I would see them come to and look out the window.
Understanding that sound was also recorded, I kept (loudly) muttering "Fucking Nosy Twats".

It Stopped
I still mutter it occasionally just in case - if they aren't recording, they won't hear it, AND if they are TOUGH SHIT. I don't think they are though as I no longer see a face appearing at the window. I think they have adjusted the camera.

Nicetobenice7 · 22/04/2024 21:40

Ring doorbells are no different to cctv ...bet some of the moaners on here would soon be knocking at the neighbours door if they needed ring doorbell footage if a crime had been committed on the property car ect ummmm

Kedece · 22/04/2024 21:41

I dont get motion alerts I just get notified when someone rings my bell. I have no interest in my neighbours coming & going and if I see from the thumbnail on the app that the detector has been activated by them the recording gets deleted immediately. I couldn't care less when they come and go.

Most Ring doorbell owners have them for their own security not to watch the neighbours - sounds like you've been really unlucky

Is CCTV exactly the same as the human eye too then?

CCTV is closed circuit monitoring. Ring doorbells are not.

FabulousWealthyTart · 22/04/2024 21:55

Houseinawood i do feel that the way they know our routine ( which leads on to the car moving and parking issues) is intrusive. That article was interesting thanks. I feel a bit weirded out by it all.1

aren’t there strict laws about personal data like this being stored? Didn’t think you were allowed to?

Yes there are. There are quite strict limits in law about the use of cameras. It should only cover your property perimeter I think
