To think this list of uniform rules means girls can wear shorts and trousers?

Thoughts? DD4 is due to start reception in September, and only really likes shorts and trousers. I'm cool to get her those, right? Not breaking uniform rules is it??

I would say yes, it doesn't specify that girls or boys should wear either so I would go with that. I would be surprised if there is an issue.

Needmorelego · 20/04/2024 19:10

Yes that's fine.
My daughter wore "boys" shorts and shoes during most of her primary days (she would have worn a summer check dress in summer but her school didn't allow them 🙄).

Needmorelego · 20/04/2024 19:11

What a dull bunch of colours though......🙁

35965a · 20/04/2024 19:12

Most primary schools have an all inclusive policy so all of the options apply to children of either sex. Although even if it wasn’t I’d just be sending her in shorts and trousers anyway if that’s what she likes.

Well, fairly standard surely? They're all red/dark green/royal blue/navy blue with white polo shirts and grey bottoms generally aren't they?

@5FootMama yeah.... it's standard colours. But still dull. Red polos would at least be a bit more nicer.
I mean white.....for small children let loose with black marker pens and paint 🤔😂
Get your girl shorts with good big pockets - because she WILL want to collect conkers/pebbles/random twigs on the way to and from school.

MagicLemon · 20/04/2024 19:20

Yes why would you think they couldn't wear them?

Kalevala · 20/04/2024 19:22

Yes, they don't mention girls or boys at all.

crumblingschools · 20/04/2024 19:22

@Needmorelego would you want all schools to have a red uniform?

5FootMama · 20/04/2024 19:22

Don't get me started in the "white school logo" t-shirt. They want £9 a pop! NINE BRITISH POUNDS for a single shitty white polo that will get stained by 9am on the first day...

I'm getting her supermarket plain white ones 5 for £7 and sending her in them. Not forking out £45+ for t-shirts.

Implications that shorts and trousers were for boys.

@Kalevala think it is becoming more common to have uniform policies that don’t specify whether it is for girls or boys

Kalevala · 20/04/2024 19:24

I'd get the right socks to match the trousers, though I don't know why it matters, DS was allowed any of black, navy, white, or grey 'school' colours.

That's in your own head there is nothing that says boys or girls.

Yes, I meant this is why I would not question if a girl could wear trousers. If there was a girl and boy list I would check if it was going to be an issue to wear the other.

5FootMama · 20/04/2024 19:27

Bit annoying if she wanted to wear a skirt, she'd need white socks, but for shorts it's grey socks...

I don't think they can force the issue because of affordability guidelines. It will be under a jumper until after Easter unless September is warm.

Yes, it's silly not to just allow all four colours in primary.

Needmorelego · 20/04/2024 19:53

@crumblingschools Personally I'd prefer no uniform at all (or just wear whatever your child wants/is comfortable in from the "school uniform" section of the clothes shops in whatever colour you fancy).

Peonies12 · 20/04/2024 20:08

There’s nothing there about sex specific clothing?

I doubt they'll enforce that level of strictness? Our school is very relaxed so just see how she gets on in September for a few weeks before buying too much

PuttingDownRoots · 20/04/2024 20:19

I'd be annoyed that the "girls" oprion is the harder to obtain and more expensive Navy, whereas the "boy" option is the cheaper generic grey.

Outd00rs · 20/04/2024 20:25

Schools cannot specify boy/girl anymore (I work in education) - if a boy wants to wear a pinafore he can too… my girls always wear shorts (with woolly tights in winter) - they fit for longer than trousers and better for playing in than skirts and you can get some lovely girls cuts too even in the supermarkets (not that cut matters at reception age).. I would check with your primary school teacher if they actually enforce a logo or anything as ours didn’t for KS1 and actually told me to get a cheap pack of polos without..

Needmorelego · 20/04/2024 20:43

@PuttingDownRoots hopefully the school has communicated with local retailers about what colours are required. If it's basic supermarket stuff the price should be the same whether it's navy or grey.
School uniform items and colours is about the only products that stores can request as store specific.
Unfortunately (from past retail employment experience) some schools decide to randomly change their colours but don't let the locals retailers know in advance so they can order in what is needed 🙄
