No benefits if unemployed for more than a year and other ways Sunak wants ti tackle the Benefits system

This are the headlines - I can see some massive issues here for people - it's easy to say there are job vacancies - but what if they aren't in the area people are and there is no transport to get there. How does that work? I can see a lot of exploitation here.

There's also the other rules here around PIP payments, part time workers etc.

I wonder how much personal experience Sunak has of such things?

This is an outline from the Daily Mail

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13330045/Benefits-axed-year-stop-lifestyle-choice-Prime-Minister.html

12-month rule for unemployed

Tory manifesto plans will see people on the dole have their benefit claims closed after a year unless they can convince Jobcentre staff they are actively looking for work and willing to accept any reasonable job offer.

Personal Independence Payments

Hundreds of thousands of people with anxiety and depression could lose access to payments worth up to £700 a month and instead be offered therapy to help them back to work.

PART-TIME WORKERS

New rules will require part-time workers on Universal Credit to look for more work. Anyone working for less than the equivalent of 18 hours a week on minimum wage will have to show they are actively seeking more hours.

Disability rules

The work capability assessment rules, which govern who is eligible for sickness benefits, will be tightened to require 424,000 with milder mental health conditions to start looking for work.

Sick notes

GPs could be stripped of their role in signing off people as sick and replaced by 'specialist work and health professionals' who will focus on what work people could do with support, such as flexibility to work from home.

Benefit Fraud

Investigators will be handed new powers to tackle benefit fraud, which hit £6.4 billion last year. In future they will have similar powers to those investigating tax fraud, including the ability to make seizures and arrests

Benefits to be axed after a year if jobseekers fail to find work

Unveiling the biggest shake-up of the welfare system for a generation, the Prime Minister said he was determined to prevent people staying on benefits as a 'lifestyle choice'.

All people not working through no reason should be made to work

Get a job instead of liv ing off benefits
Stop having kids to boost your benefits
All benefits need to be stopped for people able to work

No one can just “get”a job. They have to actually be offered the job.
The unemployed can’t force employers to give them work, believe or not.
You may need these benefits you’re wanting to stop someday. No one including you is immune from unemployment. Not only that but If people have paid their taxes through previous jobs and I think you get taxed (obviously not as much) on the dole, couldn’t it be argued that it’s their money.

Rubbish I've never been out of work in 55 years people just can't be bothered to get off there backside and look for work there are plenty of unskilled jobs available if they have no skill

Old thread but my son is desperate for a job. Just graduated. Doesn’t claim benefits because he’s not due them so no access to a job coach or anything like that. These unskilled jobs are inundated with applicants, literally 100s applying for one NMW job.

Me neither but I count myself very lucky. I don’t think I’m any better than than those out of work.

People in benefits are getting more than going to work while we are paying taxes to keep them The government needs to change this immediately

Well why don’t you give up work and go on these ever so generous benefits then, if you think it’s such a lark

No they aren't. I've spent the past 16 years on benefits (both in work and out of work) so I'm pretty well versed on the system, and you have no idea what you are talking about.

Yes, the £800 a month UC I get is extremely generous and more than a month's wage.

Shame Long Covid fucked me over so badly I can't actually work at the moment.

Do you get other benefits though like housing? DLA?

I bring home more than £1000 more pm than when I was on benefits (including housing benefit). Seriously if someone is getting more on benefits than you are getting through working, you need to get a better paid job or see what in work benefits you are entitled to. Or you could just carry on bitching on here.

So do I! I had to claim JSA last year after being made redundant and I used up all my redundancy money within 2 months just to cover the bills. Lucky I managed to find another job quick or I'd have been on the bones of my arse.

Absolute nonsense,I wouldn't wish misfortune on anyone..apart from you.
Unemployment is no joke once you're an age when no one wants you.
Do you realise even unqualified jobs get hundreds of applications.

In fact, there is often a lot more competition for the unskilled jobs. I was told this years ago by someone who works at the jobcentre.

I am on benefits, and that is a load of crap. I get £200 a week. Someone on NMW would get a lot more than that and probably get a UC top up.
It pays to work.

The unskilled jobs tend to be awful working conditions and zero hour contracts. The people working them still get benefits as the wage is not enough to live on.
And unskilled does not mean it is an easy job to get. There is huge competition for them, and even then the employers want people with years of experience etc.

That's crap I'm in my seventies and work at Sainsbury's
Plenty of jobs available not zero hours
Either

illumi · 16/08/2024 08:30

There are a lot of videos on YouTube from older people over 50 talking about how difficult they are finding it to get a job.

I am self employed these days but I remember applying for an admin job a few years ago, I didn’t get selected for interview and was told by the company they’d had over 300 applications. Then a few weeks later the job was advertised again and when I called they told me none of the 300 applicants had been suitable and that they wouldn’t be considering the previous applications. I was in my 30s at the time and could easily have done the work they wanted. It was very strange.

That's fine but not everyone can work unsociable hours/weekends.

I can now but when my DS was little there's no way I could work evenings or weekends because I am a lone parent with no childcare help. I could only work nursery hours. Most retail jobs require people to work weekends.

I expect you're able to work unsocial hours and with maximum flexibility at your age. It won't be your main income either, given that you're already a benefit recipient.

Some housing yes but no DLA. I do have the limited capacity for work portion too which tops me up a bit or I'd never manage. Just sold my car too because things were so tight. It's miserable and I miss working !

elliejjtiny · 16/08/2024 13:46

The only people who are receiving more in benefits than working people who earn too much for benefits are the people who have several children on DLA. Now remember that the DWP only give out DLA to children with very severe needs. Looking after 1 child whose needs are severe enough to get DLA is incredibly hard work. Looking after several is a whole new dimension of hard work. And then when the child turns 18 you lose about £400 a month in universal credit and you have to claim universal credit for them in their own right. Which is less than £400. And college has finished so either you care for them 24/7 or you fork out a small fortune for carers. You really shouldn't be envious of these people.
