Would you stay home if money was no issues?

If money was no issue and you could just stay home and do your hobbies, read, work out, see friends and then keep the house ticking over would you or would you rather work?

For me, money being no issue would mean I was personally financially well off enough to not work. Not relying on a partner as that is never a guarantee.

So yes, if I won the lottery and could quit work forever I would. If it meant relying on money from a partner then no, never.

thecatsthecats · 19/04/2024 16:16

Yep, although I'd want the money to cover part time nursery too so I could do my own thing.

I have had three stints out of work in the past few years including mat leave now. Never had any trouble occupying myself.

catinthetinhat · 19/04/2024 16:16

No, I'd have to do something. I think it's important to contribute to society.

redfacebigdisgrace · 19/04/2024 16:22

I think you’re short sighted to be honest. All of my friends whose husbands left them were blind sided.

Needmorelego · 19/04/2024 16:22

@catinthetinhat that's the irony. When I was working I felt I wasn't contributing to society.
I was contributing to the finances of the company owners.
By having the freedom to do what I want - I can actually contribute better.

@Mumaway I don't have kids so no childcare duties!

It would depend why I didn't have to work for money.

I might feel a bit guilty stopping working if the only reason I was able to do so was because my partner was working for example, especially if my decision to do that meant that he was not able to reduce his hours/stop working. I'd rather we both went part time. Obviously that's dependent on specific finances and how my partner might feel about working etc.

GauntJudy · 19/04/2024 16:24

I'd not work if I was wealthy. I only go to work to put food on the table, I don't hate it but I'd rather not be obliged to go!

movingonsaturday · 19/04/2024 16:25

Yesssssss

ChooksnChicks · 19/04/2024 16:30

Speaking as someone who was made redundant 8 weeks ago, I would rather be working, even though money hasn't been a concern as such, our savings are depleted and I am so relieved to be starting a new job in a week.

If I was a multimillionaire, well, that's a different story. I'd be more than happy to fill my days with galavanting and fripperies, paying other people a wage to do things I would rather not, and reduce my stress levels. Of course.

CommeIlFaut · 19/04/2024 16:31

Gosh, absolutely not. There is very little financial advantage in our family to me doing my job. DH is a very high earner and it would be easier and less stressful if I just stayed at home and we didn’t share the childcare load.

But I don’t just work for money. I love my job, it’s a useful skill and I enjoy the social and intellectual stimulation. I’m proud of my profession and my role within it. While I love home and family time, I need something else in my life too.

Kangarude · 19/04/2024 16:32

No. I don’t have to work but I choose to. I enjoy my job. I work 4 days and meet up with friends on my day off (not every week). I spend time with DH every evening and weekends and due to me working, he is now semi retired. He does most of the housework, and all washing and cooking. I’d have to do more if I gave up work and I’d really rather not Grin

Holstomorrow · 19/04/2024 16:34

Yes. Having said which, I think I would always have my own projects on the go (kind of work - just not paid. Might make money in the future if they take off). I’d love to be able to devote myself to doing this full time.

MabelsBeats · 19/04/2024 16:35

I would absolutely love it. I work hard and am exhausted. I love my home and my family and would be very happy to focus on this, and hobbies and getting physically fit, and meeting up with friends. Bliss!

I would though need to be financially secure, and not because I’m reliant on someone else for that.

Newnamesameoldlurker · 19/04/2024 16:36

Nope. Money is no issue in my household but I like working and don't want to rely on my DH. He would like me not to work but I'll never give up my job. I'm just part- time though

This is exactly my situation too- you described it very well.

Blanketpolicy · 19/04/2024 16:41

If money was truly no issue long term I wouldn't be working.

Being able to get by when kids are young is a short term outlook, it potentially impacts career, financial independence, pension, ability to save, future ability to retire early etc etc.

TheGreatestSecretAgentInTheWorld · 19/04/2024 16:41

I've had nearly two years off and am about to start another job. I have hobbies, intellectual curiosity, a keen interest in the world, the ability to motivate myself to study, and all of those fine things.

I enjoy my job, though.

BananaLlama123 · 19/04/2024 16:42

Not as a SAHM. But if I had my current income without having to work I would go back to uni and do something just for me. My first (and only) degree was civil engineering and I have a great job using it that I enjoy. But I'd love to study something for the pure enjoyment of it.

MockneyReject · 19/04/2024 16:49

Yup. Yes. Absolutely.
Because I still have to do ALL the SAHM stuff, alongside FT work.

Sonolanona · 19/04/2024 17:04

Absolutely.
I'd still do childcare from my grandson, and I would definitely volunteer (preferably with an animal charity) but I'd also spend more time at my allotment, I'd spend more time at my piano and probably study a language intensively.

I'd need some adult interaction that wasn't at soft play Grin but I would join groups and find it that way... definitely not at my poorly paid, exhausting job!

fridaynightdinner12346 · 19/04/2024 17:35

Yes 100000% I'd love to just stay home and take care of the house / my family! Don't even expect time for hobbies etc!

Bbq1 · 19/04/2024 17:42

100%

whoputallofthatthere · 19/04/2024 17:43

If money was genuinely no issue (Euromillions win etc) no, I wouldn't work. I would travel a lot. I would however have to do something with myself, so I would either volunteer for a charity or start my own business (or maybe both.)

passtheajax · 19/04/2024 17:44

I retired at 50. I love being at home and I spend lots of time doing gardening, pets, music, visiting places for coffee, crafts and sorting rooms out. I also see friends and run errands. I don't miss people at all.

Newtothiz · 19/04/2024 17:46

Absolutely
