Always gone barefoot in the sea. Came across beach shoes earlier and wondered do you go barefoot in the sea or wear shoes?

It depends, some places we’ve been had really rocky bits of sea floor & if you didn’t wear shoes you’d hurt your feet

twobluechickens · 18/04/2024 21:19

I live in the land of the weever fish so I don’t go in without wetsuit boots or swim shoes. Never been stung myself but have seen how painful it is.

goingdownfighting · 18/04/2024 21:22

I never used to but I do more and more. I take them for water sports but then take them for beach days too.

Obviously I wouldn't use them in crystal clear water and soft sand but definitely in a freshwater waterfall.

60andsomething · 18/04/2024 21:23

yes. Always.

Ifulikepinacoladas · 18/04/2024 21:25

Never have before but we are going to Croatia this year and have read several times that water shoes are highly recommended for going in the sea because of sea urchins, and its v rocky, so we will be taking and wearing them.

DahliaStar · 18/04/2024 21:26

Yes always. Weever fish! Plus I swim all year round so have just got used to wearing them.

Katherineryan1986 · 18/04/2024 21:28

Yes always, even in crystal clear water with a sandy bottom - I hate touching anything with my feet - gives me the heebie jeebies for some reason.
If I go to a swimming pool I wear flip flops to the poolside and in the changing rooms too

TimoteiChaletpants · 18/04/2024 21:36

On stony beaches. Otherwise you look like a twit entering and exiting the water

pelotonaddiction · 18/04/2024 21:37

I've started wearing them since I began swimming in rivers/reservoirs
Too many stones and I don't like things touching my feet Grin

aibutohavethisusername · 18/04/2024 21:38

Yes I do and for open water swimming.

FortunataTagnips · 18/04/2024 21:40

Yep.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 18/04/2024 21:41

I never have before but you have reminded me that where I'm holidaying later this year is more rocky/pebbly than sand so I'll need to get some . Or may just use the pool .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 18/04/2024 21:43

@Ifulikepinacoladas that's where we are going too.

Talipesmum · 18/04/2024 21:44

Never bother with sandy beaches but definitely if it’s rocky or stony

marriednotdead · 18/04/2024 21:49

I haven’t before but I bought some today because the last couple of trips I’ve struggled, am planning more time in the sea now I can finally swim starting next week! DP always has them and I can see the benefits.

CelesteCunningham · 18/04/2024 21:52

I don't like going in the sea in general, but I stood on sea urchin when wearing cheap beach shoes in Croatia and it was agony even with the shoes so would always wear something now!

JoJothegerbil · 18/04/2024 21:56

Yes. I'm in weever fish land too. Don't want to get stung.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 18/04/2024 21:58

Definitely for stony beaches, now I can't cope with the pain otherwise.

ConflictofInterest · 18/04/2024 21:59

Yes weever fish are very very painful and in far more areas of the UK coast now than you'd expect

greengreyblue · 18/04/2024 21:59

Only on Beer beach which is pretty impossible without them.

Beatrixslobber · 18/04/2024 22:00

Have you ever been stung by a weever fish? It bloody hurts. So yep, I wear wetsuit shoes.

caringcarer · 18/04/2024 22:03

We all wear shoes after DS stood on a weaver fish. It is incredibly painful and you have to then put your fish into really painfully hot water to get sting out.

Hohofortherobbers · 18/04/2024 22:06

Yes, sturdy ones, urchin needles go through a lot and are really sore and difficult to get out

Jokl · 18/04/2024 22:07

No, never. I feel left out now, judging by this thread 😂

hexsnidgett · 18/04/2024 22:16

Had to google weever fish. Are they new to the uk?
