Always gone barefoot in the sea. Came across beach shoes earlier and wondered do you go barefoot in the sea or wear shoes?

@Ifulikepinacoladas that's where we are going too.

Ooh fab. We're determined to be the first people to come back from Croatia and say 'meh, it was ok..' 😂 Everyone who's ever been has said how great it is...so we can't wait obviously 😊

Had to google weever fish. Are they new to the uk?

They've been around since I was a kid but they might have increased their range - I have always associated them with the south west but seems like they're much more widespread now.

Mumaway · 19/04/2024 18:03

Yes, because anything touching my feet in the water makes me nervous. Fish phobia

daylilies · 19/04/2024 18:08

I'm going to a stoney, possibly sea urchiny place this summer. What sort of shoes are best?

pelotonaddiction · 19/04/2024 18:12

I use similar to the first sort for river swimming and they're fine
Probably not as long lasting as the more ££ ones but still good

OnHerSolidFoundations · 19/04/2024 18:12

Yep. They keep you warm too

BaronessBomburst · 19/04/2024 18:13

I never wore them until last year in Croatia and now I wonder why I didn't!
Game changer on rocky beaches.

@Ifulikepinacoladas I think you had a thread and I posted on it...... ?
You won't say meh.

TheGreatestSecretAgentInTheWorld · 19/04/2024 18:14

I wear walking sandals. Comfortable, thick soles, and slightly buoyant.

I cut my foot swimming in the Lake District on some rusty metal. It spoiled my holiday, so I don't take chances now.

BreadAhoy · 19/04/2024 18:18

The other bonus of wearing shoes if the sea is cold is that you can kind of stride straight in and get used to the temperature. I hate having to slowly and carefully hobble in, avoiding rocks and stones, wincing every time a new bit of body comes into contact with the cold water.

candycane222 · 19/04/2024 18:19

I have tried a couple of kinds of beach shoes/swimmsocks but have found they tend to fill with water and make it hard to swim! But I definitely value them when its stony, so if anyone had recommendations about ones they enjoy swimming in then do please share 🙏🙏

Octavia64 · 19/04/2024 18:21

I swim all year round in rivers etc and yes I use them.

There are a lot of different types - some are more shoe-like and they are harder to swim in or some are more sock like with just a layer of plastic for the sole and they are easier to swim in.

ToddUnctious1 · 19/04/2024 18:26

I've bought a pair for when we go to the Seychelles later this year due to the coral in some places and I just generally don't fancy trotting about barefoot in the sea!

MidnightMeltdown · 19/04/2024 18:29

I always have, ever since I was a small kid when my mum used to put me in jelly shoes. I don't like treading on 'surprises' in the sea.

WonderingWanda · 19/04/2024 18:32

I tend to wear wetsuit socks with my wetsuit in the UK because its so bloody cold. Don't bother in warm places if it's sandy but nit a lover of stoney rocky shores. If I'm swimming and its rocky I might.

JanglingJack · 19/04/2024 18:35

twobluechickens · 18/04/2024 21:19

I live in the land of the weever fish so I don’t go in without wetsuit boots or swim shoes. Never been stung myself but have seen how painful it is.

This.

I seen people stung by Weever fish. Ouch. I'm not risking it. Our particular favourite beach used to have the babies washed up in the rock pools, so you know the adults are lurking in the sand somewhere!

Thank you
I'll go and have a look

Peonies12 · 19/04/2024 18:36

Yes because all our local beaches are stony

SevenSeasOfRhye · 19/04/2024 18:37

I didn't, but after stepping on a weever fish last summer I will be next time!

Singleandproud · 19/04/2024 18:40

Yes because of weever fish, we tend to go to the beach several times a week between June -October and have a swim and picnic dinner after school, if we've forgotten water shoes we'll wear socks which are far easier to swim in but not as protective.

I did, and I know I won't 😄. Just turned into a bit of a joke with me and DH, literally can't find anyone with a bad word to say about Croatia! Which is great obviously.

PossumintheHouse · 19/04/2024 18:42

Yes, unless the water is very clear and the area is not rocky. My sister got stung by stepping on a Stonefish once. Ouch.

LlynTegid · 19/04/2024 18:43

I don't, which means sometimes I don't go in the sea.

idontlikealdi · 19/04/2024 18:46

Depends on the beach / river / lake. I tried on a sea urchin as a child, I'm very careful now plus weever fish.

EconomyClassRockstar · 19/04/2024 18:47

Clicking on this thread has now given me a new fear, weever fish!
