How to keep next doors cat out?!

Kmward36 · 16/04/2024 17:51

We’ve lived in our home for 3 years and next door have had a car for around 18 months.

He keeps coming in. I didn’t mind but he’s now started to climb into upstairs windows if they’re open and sleep in my daughters bed and break things at are on the windowsill . I don’t want to stop opening the windows.

i was hanging washing up today and he went into our kitchen and started to eat a chicken that id just pulled out of the oven.

He poo’s all over our garden and in the house. I’m fed up of having to pick up cat poo before my children go out (they came in covered in it once 🤦🏻‍♀️). I’m now pregnant and really don’t want to keep doing this due to the risks involved

ive spoken to next door and they’re unsure what to do. I’ve bought the sonars for the garden that are meant to keep them out and they didn’t work. I’ve put orange peel around as that was meant to keep they away and they were actually really keen on it!

any suggestions? I don’t see why I need to close off every bit of fresh air in my own house for a pet That isn’t mine😣

Cat proof fencing?
If they aren’t prepared to fit it to keep their cat in, you could fit it to keep it out or suggest they get a catio maybe? Oh and have them come round and poop scoop every single day so they get fed up and do something!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 16/04/2024 22:02

Don't let him in and absolutely never feed him.

FakeMiddleton · 16/04/2024 22:04

This fuels my hatred for cat owners who don't keep them indoors or do catio.

I'd get the hosepipe out tbh.

Water pistol.

He won't like it but it won't harm him.

BettySpaghettio · 16/04/2024 22:17

Yes to the water pistol

RazzleDazzleEm · 16/04/2024 22:31

, it's not harmful Agree water

theeyeofdoe · 16/04/2024 22:41

Yes just squirt him with awater postol.

Stomster · 16/04/2024 23:14

My cat is the sociable sort, open doors and windows are an invite but thankfully poos in my garden/litter tray, and never takes food without it being explicitly offered. Yes a water pistol is the answer to this chancer

FakeMiddleton · 16/04/2024 23:18

And after three or so occasions of having to squirt him, he'll cop on. From then on, you just have to start walking towards them and they'll run away

Quite easy to train!

2chocolateoranges · 16/04/2024 23:19

Before we got our own cat(which is certainly a deterrent for other cats) I had a water pistol on the window sill that I used . It did deter them.

sometimes I’d just throw water out the window enough to give it a fright but not soak it and they stopped coming round.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 16/04/2024 23:30

Borrow a barky, cat hating, dog for a day?

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 16/04/2024 23:33

I think you need to close the windows and use the water pistol to encourage it off the property.

You need to break the habit.

Cat owners are too often extremely selfish, it's very annoying.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 16/04/2024 23:36

And take any shit round to the neighbour, every time.

It isn't the cat's fault, they're just doing what comes naturally. It's the humans at fault.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 16/04/2024 23:42

Squirt him with water. If that doesn't work, maybe try some soft drink in there instead. The cat will hate washing it off.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 16/04/2024 23:43

Oh and put some sharp bamboo sticks in around your garden to make it unpleasant for him, especially around the area where he needs to jump down from the fence.

R41nb0wR0se · 16/04/2024 23:46

Please don't squirt with soft drink - some of the ingredients (e.g. caffeine) are harmful to cats. He's coming in because he knows he can - a squirt from a water pistol a few times will deter him without harming him. Ideally a water pistol that makes a bit of noise as an added deterrent. An old neighbour used to have a heron scarer on their pond. Remarkably effective humane cat deterrent too.

SweetLittlePixie · 17/04/2024 11:21

We had a heron scarer too and it works. I also use it for my own cat who loves to poo in my vegetable patch. Now he wont go near. Might be annoying though if washing is hanging out 😄 depending on the layout of your garden it might not work

Tryingtohelp12 · 17/04/2024 11:25

It’s not for everyone but since we got Astro turf cats avoid our garden like the plague. I often see them walking along our fence but have yet to see them enter the garden!

theworldie · 17/04/2024 11:27

I need to get me a super soaker - I have a female interloper from next door who sits and growls at my kitten through the window! I’m so worried about letting her out.

IsadoraQuill · 17/04/2024 11:27

You can get a motion triggered sprinkler. Works a charm, you just need to remember to switch it off when you go into the garden.

TheTripThatWasnt · 17/04/2024 11:29

Water pistol - it will soon get the message.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/04/2024 11:44

Chuck water all over it, it doesn't harm them and they hate it. They won't come to a house where they get drenched.
If I had endless complaints about my cats I would get cat proof fencing put in. But luckily my cats don't bother the neighbours.

Startingagainandagain · 17/04/2024 12:10

I have a cat and my next door neighbour's cat also spends half of his days in my garden, trying to get into my kitchen or upstairs. I even found him under my bed once...

Honestly, you can try the water pistol thing and don't feed the cat but it is really hard to keep a cat away once they decided they like to visit.

Thankfully this cat and mine are quite friendly towards each other so I just enjoy watching them play together in the garden.

I also have a visiting fox and a bunch of seagulls on my roof and just see this as the normal 'joys' of living somewhere by the sea with a lot of countryside nearby.

Kmward36 · 17/04/2024 16:54

Thanks everyone, I have purchase a water pistol today and I’ve let the neighbours know I will be doing this!

fingers crossed!

Water gun, squirt bottle. You can also get cat screens for windows that are mesh like material and allow you to have open windows while stopping cats getting in. Some people put botle of water in their garden to stop cats using the area as a toilet.
