Just received an exceptionally nasty threatening email... spam

I am not worried not least because I don't view porn or perform solitary sex acts in front of my computer.... however of all the nasty emails I've ever received this is possibly the worst!!

If anyone gets something like this please don't worry it's a very nasty blackmail attempt by someone who doesn't have the material they claim.

I am posting it below so that if anyone else does get it they can see they're not alone and there's no need to be upset by these people. I know for some people this could be very distressing Flowers

Ah I get these all the time!

At work we often chime up when we get one to let others know we've been caught again and keep a tally.

I was winning but my colleague has overtaken me...

Block, delete, ignore - Never respond, they then know its an active email address.

supermamio · 17/04/2024 20:39

I always get confused about these threats. Like if they had hacked your camera, all they are going to get is an unflattering close up of your face, not a big deal

I had one purportedly from the DVLA about unpaid car tax. From a Hotmail address.

I nearly fell for one telling me my Hotmail had been compromised. Luckily I hovered over the address and did wonder why Microsoft were contacting me via gmail...

They are awful aren't they. My son got one a couple of months ago and it frightened him so much - he ignored it after getting advice and realising his downloading of films from a dodgy website (not porn, just a site that does up to date films for free) was nothing to do with it, but then I read a couple of weeks after about a lad roughly the same age who committed suicide because of one.
The people that send them are disgusting.

That's heartbreaking and it's what upsets me when I read these, that it might tip someone over the edge)

StressedOutButProudMama · 17/04/2024 21:12

See I'd be tempted to respond with.

Dear Sir

I am more than sure you definitely have the wrong person as the computer I am using is in the middle of a busy office in our local UK police department. I am 100% positive that firstly this computer isn't fitted with a camera due to security and I certainly have not performed any acts of sexual gratification and if I had I'd be concerned about the other 35 police personnel in the room seeing me rather than just yourself via a nine exhistant camera. Secondly the IP addresses and location details (even those that have made attempts to hide their data) of all correspondence is logged by our security systems. Then passed to our fraud department who will take appropriate action. I must make you aware bribery is illegal and can carry a sentence of 10 years imprisonment in the UK and almost sure this is similar in the US and my colleagues in immigration and overseas intelligence are now looking into your email.
Just to clarify when you sent your email you forgot to turn your own web camera off and out security features have managed to obtain a full aged image which is now been forwarded to contacts within the FBI for further action.
I can't say it was a pleasure dealing with you
Yours .........

“I nearly fell for one telling me my Hotmail had been compromised. Luckily I hovered over the address and did wonder why Microsoft were contacting me via gmail...”

😆

DuckonaBike · 17/04/2024 21:26

I’ve had this one too and I think it’s genius! Anyone who really has been wanking over videos of exploited women might be scared by it, and those of us who haven’t just laugh.

Most scam emails are nasty but this one is arguably a public service.

Teenagehorrorbag · 17/04/2024 21:29

I had one of those once - my PC doesn't even have a webcam!

Well done for sharing - these people are scum!!

bumblebee1000 · 17/04/2024 21:31

My Rabbi neighbour got one so did I but he also got hacked later and sent ads for dildos to everyone on his mailing list....it was quite funny...!!

BogRollBOGOF · 16/04/2024 17:48

I've had similar too with blackmail threats. While I'm used to blocking and reporting, that was unpleasant. I had to remind myself that the real details could have come from anywhere despite it feeling considerably more personal and threatening.

Fortunately I'm cleaner than clean so knew it was totally bullshit.

I had one too with my address on - it was my old address (I am not on the public electoral roll) so that reassured me a little but I have no idea where they got the address from and it was that part that unnerved me the most.

FlamingoFloss · 18/04/2024 00:20

I got this exact same email. I just deleted

burnttoad · 18/04/2024 07:47

These have been around for over a decade. Don't fret.

ForCandles · 18/04/2024 08:41

I've had a few of these, I just delete them.
The worse one I had was a few years ago. I turned on my laptop and immediately the whole screen was taken over with a message, supposedly from the police telling me that I had recently viewed child abuse pornography and I had to pay a fine of £500 to have my screen restored.
For some reason, that one really upset me. I was angry too that someone could be so sick as to make such an accusation, spam or not.
I went on my husband's laptop to see how I could get rid of it as I couldn't find a way to get it off my screen.
The met police had put a step by step instruction on their website of how to get rid of it off my laptop.
It took ages as you had to go into the registry and god knows what.
It completely screwed my laptop up literally beyond repair.
Personally, I'd like to see these scammers put up against a wall and shot.

glowfrog · 19/04/2024 07:11

@ItDoesntHaveToBeDave you let your son download films illegally?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/04/2024 07:50

All those people who like to say/think that spelling and grammar don’t matter any more, evidently haven’t realised how helpful good SPAG is for spotting scams. Errors leap off the page at you.

LifeWithADHD · 19/04/2024 07:55

Have they never heard of Kim kardashian? She made a small fortune from her tape. I’d be asking for a copy of it so I could leak it online my self and become filthy rich (isn’t there some daily mail journos on here) 🤣 tell them they have to actually pay you £900 for the privilege of watching the imaginary video.

FlipFlop1987 · 21/04/2024 21:08

These are now known as Sextortion, the National Crime Agency are big on it because vulnerable people do lose money or worse commit suicide.
You can report to your local police force, go on the homepage and there will be something on their site on the best way to deal

FindingNeverland28 · 21/04/2024 21:42

I’ve had this. The temptation to respond with something like ‘You’re too late, I’ve already posted the videos on OnlyFans’
