Where should I go this weekend?

Anxiousbutbored · 16/04/2024 11:50

I'm on my own and have never gone anywhere overnight on my own before, I really want to push myself though and try it. Where would you recommend I go and what should I do? I'm not a typical mumsnetter in that I don't have a 6 figure salary so a modestly priced stay is more what I'm looking for.

Where are you now?!

Bjorkdidit · 16/04/2024 12:00

Somewhere that's easy to get to from where you are now.

Are you thinking of driving, public transport or even flying overseas?

What are you interested in?

What's your budget for the trip?

Is there somewhere that's a little too far away for a day trip but would be worth visiting if you can go Saturday morning and come back Sunday evening?

If the weather an issue - check where the weather is good.

Beebumble2 · 16/04/2024 12:41

Given that it’s in this country and a convenient distance, I’d go to a small city with interesting things to see, such as York.

NisekoWhistler · 16/04/2024 12:45

Might be able to get something overseas cheap. Have a look at Skyscanner to anywhere and see what comes up.

Otherwise where do you live/how far would you like to travel?

Where are you now? I'd go and stay in the countryside or by the sea and do some hiking, wander around cute little towns/villages and visit cafes. If for just one night you don't want l go far so I won't recommend specific places without knowing where you're based. If you're doing 2+ nights then maybe go abroad. Difficult to suggest locations without knowing your interest.

Anxiousbutbored · 16/04/2024 13:37

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm in East Anglia, I love being outside and hate shopping if that helps.

How about booking an airBnB on the Norfolk/Suffolk coast, and go for a bit or a nature weekend.
Walks, beach, fish and chip supper etc?

MagpiePi · 16/04/2024 14:07

I'd find a B&B in Hunstanton and go to the RSPB Snettisham site, have a walk along a beachand stop for ice cream or coffee and cake or both; have a nice meal out somewhere in the evening, maybe visit a stately home - Holkham Hall or Sandringham - or some historic sites like Creake Abbey.

GR8GAL · 16/04/2024 14:09

Check for cheap flights with the likes of Ryanair and other budget airlines, coupled with a savvy Booking.com search, you'd be surprised what you can do on a budget.

As for travelling solo, its honestly something more people should do. I've done London, Amsterdam and Barcelona by myself on several occasions and loved every minute. No arguments about where to go, what to do, where to eat...

Hope wherever you end up going that you have a lovely trip and plenty of "me" time!

Snowdonia perhaps? Not miles away, incredibly scenic, you'll no doubt find a few nice glamping options. Scotland for that matter could be a good one for outdoorsy types.

Krakow is such an underrated (and very affordable) place. I went with my dad years ago, stayed near the main square, ate great food, did the Salt Mines and Auschwitz/Birkenau and took part in some very entertaining walking tours.

The whole city just needs a good powerwash and it'd be gorgeous.

SummerHouse · 16/04/2024 14:14

I would go to winterton on sea and stay in a thatched roundhouse at Hermanus holiday park. I think one night is £125. Stunning place. Beautiful dunes.

Ha ha, that's probably one of the longest journeys you can do in the UK, certainly not the first choice for a quick overnight trip for the nervous, whether driving or on public transport.

OP what about Lincoln? Have you been there before? That's nice for a wander around with architecture etc. There's also the Lincolnshire Wolds and beaches.

Will you be driving or on public transport because that makes a difference as to what's achievable and least stress.

Plantpott · 16/04/2024 14:23

I'd go the Peak District then. It's not too far to drive from you, plenty of scenic places to walk. Bakewell is a cute little town to stay in and it's near lots of the nice walking spots. Alternatively the cotswolds is lovely but also further from you and more expensive.

I wouldn't consider any journey in the UK to be long, then again I've travelled around countries where the nearest town is 8 hours away by car (remote areas of California for example). After that, nothing seems like a long journey. Plus there's always the option to fly.

Ilovemyshed · 16/04/2024 14:29

Or take a look at destinations flying from Norwich or Stansted.

Andthereyougo · 16/04/2024 14:33

I often go and stay in a Travelodge over a weekend. Choose an area maybe 1 to 2 hours away then look what’s on in that area. Craft shows, antiques fairs, art exhibitions. If you’re driving make sure wherever you stay has free parking.

knackeredmu · 16/04/2024 14:45

Snaps and orford ness - amazing place to wander round - stay in Aldeburgh or Southwold and eat chips on the beach with an Adnams beer

Keep it regional so if it's truly shit you can go back home. Also it means you can push yourself by staying overnight somewhere but not managing connections/travel alone on top of that. https://www.visiteastofengland.com/post/top-10-bucket-list-destinations-in-east-of-england Anything there inspire you?

"Snowdonia perhaps? Not miles away."

From East Anglia?

BiscuitTins · 16/04/2024 15:56

Depending on where you are in East Anglia…
North Norfolk coast , might be a bit “bracing” this weekend:
budget- hostel at Burnham deepdale - clean and you can get an en-suite room if you want it
more luxury- the crown in Wells
or
train to London, stay in a Premier inn and see all the art galleries/ museums you want
I love both, but would probably prefer a city this weekend

GameOfJones · 16/04/2024 15:56

Have you been to Lincoln before? It's not far fron you and is beautiful and also a small and friendly city.

Personally, I would find a city that is easy to get to from you by train. Get yourself a nice coffee and take a book and view the train journey as part of the holiday.

Book a hotel within your budget and spend a weekend exploring the city. There are usually guided tours you can join or I just like wandering round the museums, galleries and coffee shops.
