Any dentists on here? 🙈 following on from my post yesterday.. Had some brown horrible smelling creamy stuff come off the socket when using a gauze 🤢 Site is slightly sore still but nothing paracetamol & ibuprofen won’t sort… also quite worried because I can’t make out a blood clot? I have a dentist appointment tomorrow so she can check me over. Thanks guys, been an anxious wreck since having it out 😢

I have been doing salt water rinses also.

Do you have a temperature?

Glad you have an appointment tomorrow. If you feel unwell/raised temperature in the mean time, I’d call 111 for advice.

hope it’s sorted without problems.

I don’t have a temperature no. I called 111 initially this morning that’s how I got my appointment for tomorrow , I’m currently on a 9 month waiting list for a dentist so I’ve been going to an emergency one. Does it look bad?

Really? 😣😣 I’ve already spoken to 111 and the best they can do is an appointment tomorrow 😫 what can I do in the mean time?

Do you have a walk in centre nearby? If not, pharmacies usually have a consulting room. They can assess and advise you what to do.

I don’t have a walk in centre nearby but I do have a pharmacy not far from me who have a consultation room. Would they be able to prescribe antibiotics?

I don’t think so but they can advise where to go to get dealt with quickly.

Thank you. I’m going to call them now before I go down. Trouble is I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old and my partner is at work 😫

Oh Lord, that is difficult. You need someone qualified to see it today, though. You don’t want to end up really unwell.

(if it helps with your 3 year old, pharmacies usually sell sugar free lollies, so you can have 5 quiet minutes with the pharmacist 😃)

All the best.

Thank you! I’m really panicking this is the one thing I was trying to avoid 😢 the only bad symptom I have I would say is the weird smelling gunk from the socket. It’s not literally pouring out it was just on the gauze.

Agree with others walk in centre or pharmacy, the things with mouth infections if not treated quickly can lead to serious complications which a lot of people don’t realise, hope you get it sorted x

Thank you. Unable to get help from pharmacy so going to wait until my appointment at 10am tomorrow. Luckily I’m not in pain the only issue is the appearance of the socket & the brown smelly stuff. X

It looks absolutely fine.
@TwinklyRoseTurtle you need to go back to dental school pronto…..that is NOT an infected socket and does NOT need antibiotics. In fact please do some CPD as to when antibiotics are necessary.
@wsmummy2024 it’s normal. It was normal yesterday and it’s normal today. Why are you putting gauze on it anyway? Just leave it alone to heal

RobinHumphries · 11/04/2024 15:24

Even 12 hours later the clot will have started to epithelialise and no longer looks like a blood clot.

Thank you… do you know why it has a weird smell to it? I thought this meant infection so obviously presuming the worst. I suppose I’ll find out tomorrow at my appointment

OP posts:

It smells cos it’s in the mouth and it’s still healing. Please - just leave it alone you don’t need to see a dentist

  • and I am leaving it alone. I haven’t touched it at all, I only put the gauze there as I could smell something and wanted to see if it would transfer onto gauze which it did.

@RobinHumphries NOT a dentist, but offensive smelling, creamy discharge and pain unresolved with analgesia suggests infection to me, so in my (own) opinion would need a review.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 11/04/2024 16:31

RobinHumphries · 11/04/2024 15:32

@TwinklyRoseTurtle

Unrelated to my profession… did not profess to be a dentist, but from a healthcare point of view as I mentioned offensive discharge needs review, as can’t see bed of wound ( under clot I presume)

MonsteraMama · 11/04/2024 16:32

Gosh lots of panickers on here who apparently have never seen a dental infection.

All four of my wisdom teeth sockets looked like this and were fine. It looked like a healing socket yesterday and it looks like a healing socket today. It's fine.

I've also had an infected socket that spread to my jaw bone because it was during lockdown and I couldn't get an appointment. The swelling and pain was unimaginable from day one. You'd know if it was infected.

Stop messing with it so much, you shouldn't have gauze on it, or be swishing with salt water too often. It's healing, let it do so!

RobinHumphries · 11/04/2024 16:41

@TwinklyRoseTurtle first thing OP asks is any dentists? If you are not a dentist then your opinion is frankly irrelevant (as you have proved). The OP also says the pain IS controlled by painkillers.

@RobinHumphriesno need to be rude, was offering advice, Apologies if misread, hope you get it sorted OP.

Ahhhhhbisto · 11/04/2024 16:56

I am not a dentist but have had mutiple extractions. I think that looks fine, think it's granulation tissue which is totally normal and if you are feeling well that is a good thing.

You will seriously regret fiddling if you end up with dry socket (speaking from experience Blush), the worst pain I have ever felt and really unwell too. No more gauze and not too many or too forceful rinses.
