Myself and My colleague will meet with you....

FFS please stop using "myself " in emails!

Just remove your colleague's name from the sentence and see how stupid you sound...

"Myself will meet with you"

There see! It's not hard. The word you are looking for is "I"

I WILL MEET WITH YOU

Ffs. You work in communications

Ashamed to say I’ve even found dh guilty of this, when he’s writing something official. Luckily he usually gets me to proof-read! And he’s a bloke with quite a lot of letters after his name, who attended an elite and very academic school.

IMO it’s become such an insidious part of ‘business-speak’ - whether written or verbal - a bit like the old ‘your letter of the 15th inst. (or ult.)’ - (some may be old enough to remember) - if only it would go the same way!

Too many people evidently just think it somehow sounds more intelligent. And I dare say aren’t too sure about using I or me anyway - look how many MN posts start with ‘Me and dh (or whoever)….’ - so ‘myself’ would seem to solve the problem.

blueshoes · 10/04/2024 09:49

Me, myself and I request your attendance ...

Maelil01 · 10/04/2024 09:50

Can we please include all the other "selves" which are being neglected?

"We're going to send the documents to yourselves for signing, then just "pop" them in the post back to ourselves." 😡

RumNotRun · 10/04/2024 09:55

A senior reporter for my local paper wrote an article yesterday with the phrase "myself and two friends". I did rant a bit on X about it and tagged in the paper and reporter. I have become the grumpy pedant who, in years gone by, would have been continually writing to the letters section 😁

I see you’ve had dealings with my solicitors 😁

I was in a meeting a couple of weeks ago and actually said something along the lines of "I'll email it to yourself" and then cringed. I actually apologised and corrected myself before continuing.

It's not something I usually have a problem with. I have no idea why I suddenly threw in a reflexive .

Is this kind of grammar mis-use catching?!

boniobiscuit · 10/04/2024 10:06

I had a phone call from a dental practice last week which went like this,

"Hello Ms Boniobiscuit, Dr Dentist has asked myself to call yourself to book yourself an appointment. What day are you able to come and see himself? "

I swear that if he wan't such a good dentist I'd have de-registered there and then.

It's catching! It's not something that ever crossed my mind until recently and now I see and hear "myself" used everywhere, I hate it but I'm worried I'll start doing it too.

TeenLifeMum · 10/04/2024 10:15

Probably an email from one of my inherited team. One guy is clearly desperate to sound clever and business like. He uses that kind of phrasing and worse. I cringe when I get ccd in.

"From myself and the train crew" Grin

it’s usually “the onboard train crew” and I always mutter darkly to myself (!) “as opposed to the train crew trotting alongside”…

unnumber · 10/04/2024 10:21

A good listener or a wide reader (of modern literature among other things) will have come across this usage often enough to absorb it, unless they are particularly anxious about being seen to adhere to invented rules about grammar.

Language doesn't naturally evolve toward optimism efficiency - one word one use. Jim and myself has existed as an alternative to Jim and I, historically. Then you get writers about language who insist that only one form is right, the whole world doesn't get the memo (or doesn't care), and we have another unnecessary division and status grab.

Putting 'Myself' Where 'Me' or 'I' Usually Goes

It's just me, myself, and I—unless it's just 'myself'

Not to mention starting with “On behalf of myself..” which is announced regularly on my train.

Is "on behalf of myself" actually wrong? I'm generally in line with the mood on this thread and get twitchy about overuse of "myself". But "On behalf of me (and the train crew)" sounds equally wrong.

I guess the entire sentence needs to be ripped up and replaced with
"The train crew and I would all like to thank you for travelling with X and wish you a pleasant onwards journey".
or
"On behalf of the entire crew, I would like to wish you"

The reason why there isn't a good way of saying that one is doing something on behalf of oneself is that it's a nonsensical concept.

cocavino · 10/04/2024 10:22

Are you familiar with Pedant's Corner? 😉

This also drives me bonkers.

Pedants'.

We like to keep the bitching about other people's SpaG out here in the wild though, as far as possible. Hopefully PC can return to its former glory days when we discussed linguistic quirks rather than pointed and laughed at the thickos.

You usually hear it as on behalf of myself and the crew / on behalf of myself and the company though, don't you, which is a useful distinction. I'm thanking you directly, and on behalf of x , y , z.

You could insist on "on my own behalf, and on behalf of ...", or on other ways of rephrasing. But "on behalf of myself" is a reasonable formation.

It is useful too, because a driver could decide just to thank you on behalf of his company, which has a different meaning.

Language has to be catching! Otherwise we would never learn to speak, learn new words, or see language change.

KimberleyClark · 10/04/2024 10:36

”Myself and my fellow Directors would like to…”. is one I have seen.

Konfetka · 10/04/2024 10:39

Bugger. Now I want cupcakes with pink icing.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 10/04/2024 10:43

Totally agree! I hate the use of 'myself' when it should be 'me'.

So glad it isn't just myself that feels this way...

Edited

As opposed to the service / maintenance crew at the station would be my guess.

remembe · 10/04/2024 10:46

I teach subject verb object in year 3 now to try to help with things like this. I'm always telling my 7 year olds a lot of grown-ups don't know as much syntax and grammar...

BathshebaEverdene1 · 10/04/2024 10:55

Most of us know zero grammar. It's the way we were taught...' a verb is a doing word' was as far as it went.
I used to teach English to speakers of other languages and frankly it was embarrassing being asked questions like " is that a transitive verb"? Or " what about the subjunctive?" LOL I sharpened up over time.

suburburban · 10/04/2024 10:58

Yes I understand where you are coming from

I will meet with you and xx on x date

Well, yes. But seeing as you’re on a moving train and they’re talking about the selection of snacks and light meals on offer…
