As above she's got a wicked cough, it didn't sound chesty but she's cough to point of gagging. 16

How long has she had the cough for? we have all been ill and two out of the four of us vomited a few times because of coughing. Ours was so violent we had a bit of blood mixed in sometimes. I had mine for 6 weeks and the rest had theirs for about 5 weeks. I had another issue and went to the Doctors and did get them to also check my chest and it was totally clear.

A mate who is not a medic but has a medical background said don’t have cough medicine as suppressing the cough mean you aren’t getting rid of stuff and we did have ridiculous amounts of phlegm and snot.

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 07:32

Mild cough a week with cold and now this has kicked in this week.

They are real sessions when they start, I'm not sure how she can do her exams with it.

Maybe docs could give inhaler?

It seems more dry no chesty sounds

Mine has been similar and needed antibiotics for a chest infection, as soon as the course started , massive improvement. It isn’t true that cough mixture suppresses a cough, a lot of the modern ones have ingredients like guaifenesin which thin mucous and make it easier to cough up. Steam can also be helpful, in the form of those little facial steamer pots.

When was her last whooping cough vaccine?

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 08:00

@RafaistheKingofClay gosh I don't know, when do children normally have one? She's never had a cough like this.

It's the timing of it that's concerning.

@Doctorbeach did yours sound chesty? Hers doesn't but I could be wrong of course but it doesn't sound like it seems more dry

OP posts:
RafaistheKingofClay · 10/04/2024 08:06

Might be with phoning the GP and querying whether it could be whooping cough then. They can give antibiotics but it isn’t known as the 100 day cough for nothing.

Doctorbeach · 10/04/2024 08:17

No it sounded dry but developed into coughing fits til vomiting. There was some breathlessness though.

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 08:21

@Doctorbeach yes she struggling to catch breath because they are so intense

OP posts:
Seeline · 10/04/2024 08:24

It does sound as if it could be whooping cough. I had it as an adult and would cough until I was sick.

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 08:26

Can they catagorically say if it's whooping cough?

Do antibiotics help...

The timing with gcse soon! She has an exam on 17th April 😱

OP posts:
soupfiend · 10/04/2024 08:27

Dont count out silent/acid reflux, this gives me a cough that is uncontrollable, dry, useless, cant tcatch my breath until Im retching

Also can cause mucus, runny nose, lots of throat clearing but you can have some or none of the symptoms too

I dont get heart burn with mine

Labtastic · 10/04/2024 08:28

Sounds like whooping cough - it's done the rounds this winter. If GP suspects they'll most likely give you antibiotics report to public health England who will send you a swab kit to test so you'll know either way (been through this with DS)

NoisyDachshunddd · 10/04/2024 08:29

Sounds like classic whooping cough. Get a diagnosis as then she might get special consideration for exams.

FrenchBean7 · 10/04/2024 08:31

I’ve done this many times at the tail end of a cold. It sounds like her airways are irritated and maybe a bit constricted. I have mild (and controlled) asthma so I use a bronchodilator at this point (still makes me cough!) and I also inhale over a steamy bowl of water (not boiling!) - sometimes with Vicks in or something similar and it seems to help a bit although it makes my eyes sting! It’s very tiring and I feel for her. My experience is that it passes but I would maybe get her checked for asthma. Also, it’s getting to peak hay fever season for anyone allergic to tree pollen like me.

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 08:41

Well I've managed by a miracle of timing to get a gold dust appt but unfortunately with a passive doctor who doesn't delve deeper it's refer.

I will see what he says.

@FrenchBean7 THE hacking fits seemed to start at early eve late afternoon. We've never been noticed her to be sensitive to tree pollen etc and I've got a dehumidifier plus air purifier in her room.
However we thought others dc had asthma and it was allergy so who knows!!

OP posts:
IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 08:44

She doesn't seem to have a temp and aside from looking pale (waking to cough in night) and finding it exhausting she's OK

OP posts:
FrenchBean7 · 10/04/2024 08:47

Outside of these more acute symptoms, does she ever feel like she has a bit of a wheeze - possibly more noticeable at night time?

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 09:45

No I don't think so

OP posts:
IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 11:22

Of course she coughed guts up on way there, clear as a whistle inside.

Doc said airways clear, awful cough is doing the rounds and in adults can take months Togo.

Doesn't present like whopping cough he said.

OP posts:
RafaistheKingofClay · 10/04/2024 15:04

The antibiotics wouldn’t do much for the symptoms, they just stop her from being infectious.

From what you’ve said it presents exactly like whooping cough. Particularly in teens and adults who don’t have the distinctive whoop that younger children have. It is doing the rounds at the moment so I wouldn’t be surprised if a few of those adults with the months long cough also have whooping cough that hasn’t been picked up. It’s often missed.

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 15:57

I did say she's got a bad cough would they like to sit us somewhere else and they said definitely in the waiting room 😯wifhwith lots of elderly people in there! Beggars belief.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 10/04/2024 16:00

I had same. Just cos it's so bad you gag doesn't mean it's whooping cough
They wouldn't give me anything as my chest was ok apparently.
It's awful having a cough that makes you gag

My son has asthma and gets an awful cough every year around this time. He uses an inhaler but I also have him put Vicks vapour rub on his feet then put socks on.. about 15/20 minutes before bed.. I've done this since he was a baby and it helps him a lot. Also if he has a coughing fit I take him outside to get fresh air and breathe deeply into his lungs. Best of luck, hope your daughter feels better soon 🤞

IfYouSawwhatISee · 10/04/2024 16:22

Thank you!

With my other dc it was actually dust mites that triggered her cough! We never knew.

I had forgotten about vicks, will suggest that.

It seems to be the same time each night she starts the major cough... Coughing, wretching... It's so extreme.
