Making money on the side - any ideas?

sosickofbeingskint · 09/04/2024 13:26

I work full time but I'm in debt.

I need to make some extra money on the side to pull myself out of the debt. It needs to be stuff I can do from home.

I spent some time looking at side hustles recommended online but there are so many scams and places that pay ridiculous prices. I mean, I don't mind doing stuff for not a lot of money as it'll all add up if I keep doing it, but one site is offering 50p for surveys that take 20 minutes. I'm sure I can do better than £1.50 an hour!!

So, so far I've resolved to learn how matched betting works as that seems a no brainer if you put the time into learning it. (This isn't gambling for those unfamiliar with it).

And I've signed up with a bunch of focus group sites. They pay decent money but it's very sporadic.

And I applied to be a user tester.

Can anyone recommend any ways to make some money on the side?

Have a look in the money section, there are threads called earn £10 a day. Not sure how popular it is at the moment but been going for a while and has loads of ideas. If you cant find it I can post a link

sosickofbeingskint · 09/04/2024 13:36

Ooh, I didn't know there was a money section! I'll go look, thanks :)

Have a look at market research companies. You can WFH, they're flexible with hours and you get at least minimum wage and extra with bonuses, you could do a couple hours in the evenings.

Yes I used to use the money section £10 a day thread. I made about 2k in a year with a combination of match betting (just the earliest stage) surveys and click worker. Probably only an hour or two per day but I had babies at the time and making a bit of cash on the side was amazing for my brain. Half the cash is still in an emergency account 5 years later.

I tried the transcription website but too dyslexic to pass the tests. Are you a decent typist? Could try that. Don't know if AI has got to that sector yet.

Sorry to jump on but what is the transcription website please?

Overthebow · 09/04/2024 13:46

Have you tried prolific? It actually pays decent money for surveys and there’s some which only take a minute or two.

Oh sorry miss typed. There are various sites where you can be paid to transcribe audio to text but standards of speed, punctuation etc are high. Let me see if I can find them. This was a couple of years ago though.

Turkeyhen · 09/04/2024 14:04

Try Data Annotation Tech (not that I made it through the assessments, but you might).

Luckydog7 · 09/04/2024 14:07

I think it was scribie. Freelance work.
There are a few if you Google them.

BlancheSaysYes · 09/04/2024 14:07

Don't fall for any MLM schemes. Any job offering work from home at fantastic hourly rates sound - and are - too good to be true.

Luckydog7 · 09/04/2024 14:09

Can recommend prolific too. Unfortunately I had to stop as we changed our internet provider to a small local one which didn't support the website but I used to make 30-50 a month from prolific, the surveys are quite fun too. You need to really on the ball and sign up to each survey before it's full though especially the well paid ones.

$5 to $20 per audio hour is the advertised rate at Scribie, as a new worker you are going to be towards the bottom of that range. Unless you are a shit hot touch typist who can transcribe as quickly as people speak, you're earning peanuts.

ASighMadeOfStone · 09/04/2024 14:26

I'm on the tenner a Day threads under various names.
Despite being a court transcriber as an official side hustle, I've never passed any of the annotation tests on the non official ones!
Prolific is good, bit hit and miss, you can go for weeks with nothing and then earn about£30 in a day. They weren't accepting applications a month or so back (DD applied) but might be now.

I've earned some fairly good bits and bobs on Appen. (last one was a language comparison for AI which was quite interesting, had to listen to utterances in 2 languages and mark them on similarities) I got £58 for a couple of hours of that.

Do you mean like the focus group websites? I didn't think you could get enough work from them to do 2 hours a night? Maybe you mean something else?

FWIW, focus groups I'm already signed up for include:

  • Focus Force
  • Focus4People
  • Inspired Opinions
  • Take part in research

That sounds great :)

I want to use the money to pay off debt - the more I pay off, the less interest I'll be paying too, which is a win!

Just looking at the £10 a day thread...

Matched betting - approx an easy £1k - £1.5k to be made.

Switching a dummy bank account - another £700 - £1000 to be made.

There are good AI transcribing apps/platforms now. I pay to use one of them, a human wouldn't be able to compete

This is a great account to follow on TikTok. I refer a lot of people to this link. She made a goal last year to earn an extra 100K with side businesses. She started with zero money and she recorded everything from day one.

She ended up earning 84K and that was as a result of the fact she fell pregnant and ended up on maternity leave so was not able to focus on her goal as much.

It is a very honest account, no scams and she gives her financial records each month so you can see where she is making her money.

I really recommend you having a look at her videos because you may get some inspiration and ideas.

Do you have a hobby or skill you could cash in on?
Sewing you could do alterations for people. Knitting hand made jumpers or baby clothes. If you speak a language you could advertise to take in translation. Even ironing at a pinch.

isitbananatimealready · 09/04/2024 15:30

Sell your old stuff on ebay.

None of these :(

No one would pay me to iron 😂definitely not one of my skills!!

Have been working in offices and looking after kids for the best part of two decades.
