DBS nightmare - post office refusing to accept certified copy of marriage certificate?

Is this a thing? I could literally walk in and get a passport/driving license with it! They are saying it has to be the one issued on the day (which is long gone). Enhanced check so they require 3 IDs (passport, driving license and trying to use my marriage certificate!)

You can’t produce a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate because what we receive originally is a certified copy already. Solicitors should not certify copies of these but some still do.
You can order extra ones from GRO website.

mitogoshi · 09/04/2024 10:08

Utility bill is fine as the third for. Id

dirtyblond · 09/04/2024 10:10

It is really hard, isn't it. I had to ask my bank to send me a paper copy of a bank statement. All bills and statements are online now, so I didn't actually have anything I could use. Ask your bank to sendyou a paper copy of a statement. That might do it.

idontlikealdi · 09/04/2024 10:11

I used my council tax bill as the third

Toxicblackmould · 09/04/2024 10:22

@Leilalala should have specified - it is one ordered from the GRO website!

have the same problem with bills - all online! I doubt they will accept one I’ve printed myself. I’m also with Monzo bank and not sure they will send a statement. Weirdly I’m not listed on the council tax bill though, although definitely registered here as we get my 25% student discount. Absolute nightmare! I called them and after waiting over an hour, they told me to try a different post office

You can download a statement from Monzo and print it

Rosecoffeecup · 09/04/2024 10:38

Is this why? Do you have to use the PO?

DBS nightmare - post office refusing to accept certified copy of marriage certificate?
BeaRF75 · 09/04/2024 10:42

Birth certificate; letter from Govt department confirming entitlement; annual mortgage statement; P60 or P45 (original, not online); confirmation of pension or investments (ie annual statement). There is a huge long list - you will find something.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 09/04/2024 10:42

Post Office is not DBS. They don't have the latitude to be reasonable, they are simply adhering to the client [DBS] rules set out and would be in breach of contract if they don't. Your local post office branch is essentially a franchise operation of the PO and will have to follow the rules rigidly especially over Identity. All the companies send in mystery shoppers to check that PO staff do their jobs to the letter.

I would contact DBS for guidance. You can't be the only person in this situation.

Ariela · 09/04/2024 10:48

Your council tax bill normally comes by post, so you should have just got that, ditto annual water bill if pay twice a year.

Toxicblackmould · 09/04/2024 11:17

@Rosecoffeecup unfortunately has to be done in though the post office as the company my uni is using requires them. That’s so annoying, no idea why that’s not listed on their (the company’s) website or why selecting marriage certificate as one of the IDs is possible. I’ve just requested a paper bill from octopus so hopefully that comes soon and I can use that.

sashh · 10/04/2024 04:15

Student loan letter? Letter from the uni?

Magenta82 · 10/04/2024 04:32

All marriage, birth and death certificates are certified copies of the listing in the register.

If the persons at the post office is being weird try a different branch.

BloodyAdultDC · 10/04/2024 06:29

Go to a different branch.

I once used check and send to get mine and dc passports - they told me I didn't need to send one document for dc which it explicitly requested on the form. Took weeks to get sorted.

Sounds like you have a bit of a jobsworth in your local branch!

Pineapples198 · 10/04/2024 09:49

You shouldn’t need 3 ID items. I regularly put through enhanced DBS checks at the school i work at. The online system asks for 2 pieces of ID from the group that contains passport, driving licence, birth certificate or marriage Certificate. Plus a further item from another group to confirm address - which could be another item from the first group but also includes bills, wage slips, catalogue statements etc.

so if they won’t accept your marriage certificate take passport, driving licence and a printed out utility bill from your app or website.

BathshebaEverdene1 · 10/04/2024 09:54

I think the problem is that people don't actually understand what " certified copy" actually means.
Any certificate from GRO is a copy. Including the " original " that you were issued.
Maybe try a different branch.

MrsRaspberry · 10/04/2024 10:05

I used my marriage certificate for ID for a DBS before they said it was ok. I think this time i only needed my birth certificate and a utility bill

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/04/2024 10:07

Bugger. I don't have any of the documents as everything's online, I don't claim benefits and my passport's expired. That's going to be a bastard when I'm currently applying for jobs. They don't even accept a current DBS on the Update Service.

LIZS · 10/04/2024 10:40

If you have a savings account like an isa they will usually write with a rate change or to advertise a new account option. Letters from nhs advising of screening appointments, anything official on headed paper with your name address. Some travel passes. Electoral roll letter. Council tax bill or exemption letter.

Like I said, my bills including council are all solely online - the instructions say 'Do not accept documentation printed from the internet'. Even the NHS stuff is all done by app rather than physical paper (they don't mention it as being government, probably because a) it's partly private and b) the NHS doesn't do checks routinely (I'd fail them, too without the blasted passport or physical bills).

If it weren't for my having the short birth certificate issued when I was born, I'd have nothing acceptable on the very much out of date for the digital age list of documents.

Best add it to the list of things to spend money on this month. Means I wouldn't be able to vote next month as well, and whilst I could have applied for their voter ID thing with an up to date photo, I've just registered for a postal vote instead.

Ugh. There's always something to make life more difficult, isn't there?

You can use an expired Passport as long as it's not over 10 years and you haven't significantly changed in appearance.

DrCoconut · 10/04/2024 14:27

My DBS chaos occurred due to a deed poll name change that took place when I was 8. The paperwork has subsequently been lost so there is no proof of the link to my birth name. I had a marriage certificate showing (say) Miss Smith getting married to Mr Currentname and a birth certificate for Miss Jones. But Miss Smith, having no birth certificate didn't officially exist 😫 It was sorted. I found DBS to be really good and approachable with issues like this.

It doesn't say that? It says 'Any current and valid passport'.

In response to applying for jobs, I've just used my expired Passport as Right to Work proof twice. 🙃
