What age was your child when they first went to a playground?

I'm taking about first born children really I suppose. And taking them there to specifically play in the equipment. (Rather than a tab along to an older child at 4 weeks and staying in the pram etc)

I'm only asking because my friend hasn't ever taken her to the playground behind her house, and their DS is 15months old seems late? Or was I the mad one, I was taking DD4 at around 7-8 months. (Might have been earlier if it wasn't for lockdown and the madness if closing the playground!)

Granted it was more for something to do, and she could only really go on the baby swings and a little go on the sit down roundabout with me. It would fill a good 45 minutes with the walk there, the small play and walk back..

9 months. Niece was 13 months.

pointythings · 07/04/2024 18:45

I was about the same as you, so 7-8 months. Both of mine were winter born, so it worked with the weather. They liked going on the baby swings and once they were walking it was no holds barred (with supervision, obviously!)

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 07/04/2024 18:46

Was about 18 months once DS started walking confidently. Between 12-18 months it was winter anyway so even if he had been walking earlier we probably wouldn't have taken him anyway with all the rain!

Since DC started walking so around 10-11 months

Weepingwillows12 · 07/04/2024 18:48

I can't remember exactly but at the point they could sit up themselves no issue so I would think probably 8/9 months. I think it's easier when you can put them on stuff than for the next year when they constantly fall / trip etc and have no idea about risk so throw themselves off things.

MintGreenC · 07/04/2024 18:50

It was around 6 months or so when they can sit up independently just pushed on the swing.

SabertoothKwazi · 07/04/2024 18:52

7 months but he was crawling and cruising and we didn’t have a garden so he got a lot out of it. And it was summer.

kirinm · 07/04/2024 18:53

Just looked at some old pics and my DD was about 5 months when she first went to the park / on a swing.

Favouritefruits · 07/04/2024 18:55

With my first born at About 6 months I think, I’d push the pram down to the park, sit him in a swing then walk back!

SapphireOpal · 07/04/2024 19:01

15 months when it's been the winter for the last 6 months doesn't seem wildly late tbh. If she doesn't take DC this summer I'd start to think it was a bit more strange!

MargaretThursday · 07/04/2024 19:01

I didn't take dd1 I don't think until she was confidently walking, which was 16 months, and probably a couple of months after that, because 16 months would have been February and I suspect I'd have waited for warmer weather.
I had an inside swing that fitted over a door, so didn't even take her for that,

Dd2 was definitely going at 9 months though. She walked at 8 months and was an immediate climber. The main problem was she preferred going up to going down, and places that only had a hand hold on the left side (she's only got one hand) but she didn't want to let that stop her.

Ds wasn't interested in the equipment at all. He either wanted to have a football or find the interesting wildlife and collect it. He had a particular love for snails and ants at one point. Although "Bumble" came a close second. He was convinced for ages that there was only one bumble bee - he was astonished the first time he saw more than one at a time. I learnt not to hold my hands out when he came running up saying "mummy, hold..."

Do people genuinely not spend time outside just because it’s winter? It’s not like we live in the arctic!

Due to our DD being a non sleeper, we were outside in all weather and often the first parents in the park before 9am on a wintertime weekend.

WonderingWanda · 07/04/2024 20:12

About 6 or 7 months when they could sit up for the swings.

QuiltedHippo · 07/04/2024 20:14

I've got a photo of DD on a knee on a swing at 3 months. Definitely was part of our regular mat leave activities, free, fresh air and puts a smile on their face. What's not to like.

mitogoshi · 07/04/2024 20:16

7 months or so, once they could sit up

Definitely before 1 as we had one next to our house that had a sand pit and I've got lots of pics of her on baby swings. So close to their house I do think thats a bit odd

Rosesanddaisies1 · 07/04/2024 20:18

Probably 5-6 months, after winter and when they could hold head. To not go by 15 months is sad!

Babyboomtastic · 07/04/2024 20:19

Looking at photos, it was 5 months. Just on the swings but she had been sitting independently for a while by then

We still go it, but definitely not as much as when it's warmer. It's just miserable sometimes 😞

We've been at the park at 7:15am as a record 😂😂 went there before nursery. DD had unusually woken up for the day at 5:30 😩 she normally is very civilised and gets up at 7:30. anyway, I needed to fill 3 hours before leaving for nursery at 8:40! And tonight "fuck it, we'll go to the park!".

Before they’re confidentially walking all they can do is be pushed on a swing so I don’t think 15 months is massively late. I took mine at 9 months because that was her first spring, we lived in Chicago so sure as hell wasn’t going in winter with a small baby, and even then it was mostly because we lived in a flat with no outside space and I was waiting on my work permit so it was something to do on a nice day. I probably wouldn’t have bothered before climbing sliding age if we’d had a big garden and/or I’d been working full time.

elliejjtiny · 15/07/2024 21:04

About 8 or 9 months I think.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/07/2024 21:41

I've got a picture of DS1 in a baby swing the day he turned 6m. He was crawling proficiently at 9m and enjoyed crawling up the steps to the slide. He didn't walk until 16m because he was too proficient at crawling like a rocket and climbing to care about slowing and finding his balance. Puddle suits kept us going through the winter which was his main crawling phase. He wasn't going to spend a whole winter sitting in his pram nice and docile!
