Decent white plates/ bowls etc.? Ikea?

I need to get some new and am trying to embrace white (people say food looks better on them, easier to match - colour wise - if some get broken), but I’m not totally feeling it. I worry that they'll look boring and cheaper ones remind me of canteens…

I’m more of a Denby type person, but can't afford them at the moment and the ones I have left are chipped and are mismatched (because I couldn’t get them anymore), so I’m leaning towards white.

Need to be able to go in the dishwasher/ microwave.

I like Dunelm for crockery. Not white though. I've never bought white plates or towels or bedding. Looks boring and uncared for.

If you're not feeling white don't get white!

You might be right.

What's swaying me is that I’m fed up of mismatched and obvious chips (I’m not buying new just for a chip, but it doesn’t look great)

You can get a huge box of Denny white at Costco for £50 plates / bowls / cups or tk maxx plates / bowls etc

SqueakyDinosaur · 07/04/2024 16:40

The Dartington plain white China at TK Maxx is very nice. I have a set of the pasta bowls.

YouMustBeHappyNow · 07/04/2024 16:42

We had those plates from IKEA. They got scratch marks on them from the cutlery that wouldn't come off. Looked like a toddler had scribbled on them with a pencil. Got some from Next which are better but chip more easily.

KnickerlessParsons · 07/04/2024 16:45

Sainsbury's have a good range of plain white crockery.

yaboreme · 07/04/2024 16:50

M&S they do their own brand and I love it! Not too expensive and really good quality

dementedpixie · 07/04/2024 16:57

We have this ikea set. The bowls are very versatile and can be used for pasta, soup, rice dishes, cereal, etc

The plates are also the correct size to fit in our dishwasher.

Sainsbury's have a good range of plain white crockery.

I've got white crockery from both Sainsburys and Tesco, ,both have been fine for me but I do t have any particular standards for everyday atuff

MsGrumpytrousers · 07/04/2024 17:06

I started out with all white IKEA stuff, but as other posters have said it gets really badly marked and the marks are indelible.

I bought some much nicer stuff from habitat and have supplemented it from Sainsbury's. I think it's porcelain rather than something else so it's much more hard wearing.

Saucery · 07/04/2024 17:06

The IKEA ones scratch, as a PP says and also chip really easily. I replaced them with some Habitat ones from Sainsburys. Not the quality of old Habitat, but pretty sturdy and so far haven’t chipped at all - not white, though.

dementedpixie · 07/04/2024 17:07

The square ikea set I posted hasn't marked at all and we've had it for a few years now

DianaTaverner · 07/04/2024 17:16

I've got M&S which is nice. Also have a look at John Lewis Anyday ranges eg the one below if you've got a branch near you. I agree that there's a particular sort of quasi-matt finish which shows dark lines from cutlery and which would probably drive you up the wall - you're best off with porcelain.

M&S! We've had whole set for 10 years and only broken 1 plate, nothing chipped and look good as new. It was called Rocco but Marlowe is similar.

flyinghen · 07/04/2024 17:19

We got ours from Sainsbury's, they are lovely

Pillowfights · 07/04/2024 18:02

I agree with the IKEA plates getting scratch marks but they do seem to be chip proof.

I'm looking to replace some chipped &
scratched white plates & bowls & noticed Sainsbury's had some that looked decent quality recently, also John Lewis worth a look, the Anyday range in particular for cheap & cheerful.

I'm fed up with everyone not taking care with the crockery so have basic white everything for everyday and have a separate set for nicer occasions

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 07/04/2024 18:05

We have had the M&S maxim range for 20 years now - doesn't mark, not crazy expensive and it's been available to buy replacements for 20+ years now.

That'll be the kiss of death for it I guess...

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/04/2024 18:05

M&S have a good range. But porcelain rather than stoneware as it's more robust and doesn't chip as easily.

Katrinawaves · 07/04/2024 18:13

Would it be affordable to top up your Denby from eBay if that’s what you prefer to eat off?

We have a 20 year old set which was discontinued at least 12 years ago if not more and I still regularly replace broken items on eBay. If you aren’t in a rush you can often get great deals on massive sets of it and just keep the spares until you need them!

HikingFromHome · 07/04/2024 18:38

Thank you some good suggestions. I hadn’t actually thought of Sainsbury’s or Dunelm. There’s a big M&S nearby.

I think I’ll have a look round.
