Best way to heal from trauma

Hello all

I don't have much money for counsellors

I was considering forms of self help

I want to get running more as that will help
What else helped to get over difficult experiences

Going to try mindfulness again too

Try books like the body keeps the score. I imagine there is one for trauma in the overcoming series too. I understand certain forms of exercise can assist with trapped trauma in the body ie martial arts, yoga though appreciate they can cost. All the best to you

If you work @thisisasurvivor maybe investigate whether your workplace has an employee assistance programme that maybe offers a number of free counselling sessions. O

Depending on the type of trauma, there maybe specific services in your area that can offer advice, guidance and counselling.

All the best in your journey 🙂

Support groups are usually free. And local mental health charities usually have some subsidised counselling. Have you tried the NHS self referral scheme?

Gardening helps me find peace. Something about doing manual, repetitive tasks in the fresh air stills my mind and allows me to relax and zone out. The exercise makes me sleep better at night. It feels productive when sometimes my mind is all about negative things and the fact that the things I'm planting will flower year on year is very positive and gives me hope for the future.

Sometimes I go and sit in the woods and that helps, especially when it's raining but I can't explain why. Getting out in nature seems to work for me.

I hope you find something that gives you some peace.

Is it bad that I would struggle with group therapy or even therapy for now

I am wondering what I can do myself long term 🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️

Trauma release exercise (TRE) for me. I was referred but you can also find classes. I learned the techniques practicing in a group and now I can practice on my own when I need to. It works using the psoas to regulate the nervous system so sometimes I practise yoga focusing on the psoas which has a similar but (for me) gentler effect (yoga with Adrienne has a video for yoga for the psoas). Also having soft fabrics for self soothing, and taking lots of baths. None are alternatives to talk therapy though!

Not bad at all if you feel any type of therapy would be too much just now... its great you can recognise what it is you need now.
I guess it's about you working out what sooths you and bring you a some joy and taking it from there. Anything in particular you enjoy?

Tiny steps is still change and growth. Noticing you want to make some changes is a big step in itself xx

Look into somatic experiencing, Peter Levine, look up on YT

FairyMaclary · 07/04/2024 20:33

Try the book - love yourself like your life depends on it - by Ravikant.

belindabunny · 07/04/2024 20:36

I have always found self-help books to be more useful than therapy as I found I wouldn't be honest when talking about my trauma. Maybe try working through this:

www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/mental-health/mental-health-self-help-guides/ptsd-and-cptsd-self-help-guide/

If you find it helpful there are lots of guides available on Amazon, and you can find them for whatever type of trauma you are dealing with.

I hope you find the help you need and feel better soon.

Alicewinn · 07/04/2024 20:41

Carolyn Spring has some brilliant free resources on her website but honestly, I would prioritise counselling. You could try getting discounts from newly qualified counsellors, or just ask for a discount. Some counsellors like working with people who are really ready to make changes and would rather do the work then worry about the money. All the research says it doesn’t matter about qualifications, its more about the quality of the relationship. Wishing you all the luck

Thats potentially dangerous advice tbh, while research shows the quality of relationship is determinative in therapy, trauma is one area where training and knowledge is very important to avoid doing more harm than good. I wouldn’t be going to a newly qualified counsellor to deal with trauma.

I'd agree with self help books, and The Body Keeps The Score. Talking with others who have been through trauma. NHS referral to counselling. Charities that support with mental health. Self care, and doing things for yourself. Finding hobbies that are free/cheap, and social. Journalling what you are thinking/feeling. Hope that helps. I have Complex PTSD from trauma/bullying.

ErnestCelendine · 08/04/2024 18:26

Have you watched The Wisdom of Trauma? That, and any books/articles/interviews with Gabor Mate are excellent.

Caseypacey · 08/04/2024 18:27

I found emdr the single most helpful thing to deal with a lot of childhood trauma and 30 years of being a cop trauma. It’s been life changing.
