Hoping to have a mini break in London in August, including a musical. If you’ve seen The Lion King, would you recommend it?

Great thread. I'm taking my mum for her birthday in July and I'm so excited (she doesn't know 🤫)

It's great to see with a child. I don't think it's what i'd what to see as an adult.

I’ve seen a lot of West End shows and was really looking forward to this when I saw it. I was totally underwhelmed to be honest.

It was probably worth the hype when it first started its run but was nowhere near even my top 10 by the time I saw it, which was probably about 10 years ago.

It’s ok. There are lots of better shows in my opinion.

My dc loved it. DD has asked to see it again for her 8th birthday.

None of my dc liked Matilda. I much preferred The Lion King too.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 07/04/2024 00:39

We took DD to see it, she is a massive fan. I really didn't want to go but I loved it.

Absolutely. It must be nearly 20 years since seen it. Son was whinging that it wasn't the proper Lion King (cartoon). Then he was mesmerised from start to finish.

Icehockeyflowers · 07/04/2024 00:46

It was fine.
I wouldn’t go again.
After the break, DC kept asking for the time and if it was over yet.

Tickets were very expensive.

Disclaimer - I don’t think I’m into ‘shows’ and it seems DC are the same.

I asked them recently if they wanted to go to see one and they said no.

I’d never even seen the Lion King film when I went to see it about 8 years ago so didn’t know anything of the story. I just about knew the song “Circle of Life” which wasn’t really one of my favourites.

But oh, that opening. Mesmerising. it was quite emotional. Can barely remember the rest now though, but the opening has really stuck with me.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/04/2024 00:50

And no-one had told me about it beforehand so I just wasn’t expecting it.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/04/2024 00:51

im sure that even if someone doesn’t particularly like the story or some of the songs that they can still appreciate the costumes and production skills.

Yes, I cried during the opening song because it was so beautiful and overwhelming. Dh thought it was hilarious as mufasa hadn’t even died yet. I love musicals and lion king is one of my favourites.

Pretty much same here! Went about 20 years ago. Am desperate to take the kids but can't justify the extortionate west end prices!

Also usually cry within the first 5 minutes of the Disney animation too. It's the music that gets to me every time - so powerful and emotional. "He lives in you" turns me into a blubbering wreck (I also have the movie soundtrack).

Duckinglunacy · 07/04/2024 00:57

I loved it. Which seems to be against the grain. I saw it on tour which I don’t know if that makes a difference as we had excellent seats for £75 each rather than west end prices.

I think maybe it depends what you want from a stage musical - my favourite thing is usually the scenery, costumes, and production (I’m one of those people who sits there open mouthed wondering how they did that at every scene). From that perspective, The Lion King is definitely up there.

snowlady4 · 07/04/2024 00:57

One of the best I've seen!! Goosebumps!!!! Enjoy every second!

Youarenotseriouspeople · 07/04/2024 01:12

Its amazing. Seen it in London and on tour. Ive seen loads of musicals and Lion King is definitely up there.

Floralnomad · 07/04/2024 01:15

I don’t mind the songs but for me and drags on a bit . I prefer the abridged version at Disney Paris .

Disturbia81 · 07/04/2024 01:40

God is that still around!? I went in 2010. It was amazing

What would you currently recommend for an adult?
