Shocked at the term "elderly" for a 56 year old.

Just watching a crime documentary, and the murderer was a 56 year old woman. The Cop talking to the camera, was saying how he couldn't believe that the murderer turned out to be an elderly lady. WTF? I'm 54 and don't feel "elderly" whatsoever. Whilst my own kids are adults, I know plenty of people in their 50's who still have kids at school!

What age do you think constitutes elderly? For me, I'd say 70+ (whilst acknowledging that many people that age are perfectly fit, well and able).

Effing cheek. Course 56 isn’t elderly.

BruFord · 06/04/2024 15:09

Over 70, perhaps even over 75.

I’ll be 50 later this year and if anyone calls me elderly, ill go beserk. 🤣

Yeh that's ridiculous.

I always think 80+ is elderly. Although perhaps it it is more to do with state of mind and body. MIL is basically bed bound and has just turned 70, very frail and… elderly is a good word.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/04/2024 15:13

I don't think anyone who is still regularly employed can be described as 'elderly'. Perhaps when over 75, so well-retired? I'm 63 and nowhere near 'elderly' yet, although, to be fair, I see a lot my age who have very poor health and need helping with day to day tasks and I'd probably think of them as elderly.

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 06/04/2024 15:14

You’ve just got to ask yourself, do I feel young enough to murder someone. If yes, no one should be calling you elderly.

QueenofTheBorg · 06/04/2024 15:15

70+ - definitely not 50s!

EmmaEmerald · 06/04/2024 15:15

Kylie Minogue is 56 soon. WTAF.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 06/04/2024 16:00

I know for a FACT that 56 is not elderly.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 06/04/2024 16:04

I think SAGA holidays are for the over 50s. And you can go into retirement flats from 55 though I don't know if anyone does that young!

Clearly there are organisations which think the 50-55s are elderly!

I agree, bloody cheek.

KohlaParasaurus · 06/04/2024 16:04

56 is only elderly if she's a patient in an antenatal clinic, and even then I'd expect a more respectful word to be used.

It doesn't really matter what we think elderly is. All that matters is that the police officer is an idiot, so should he be working for the police if he can't give an accurate description of a suspect?

LadyGooGaa · 06/04/2024 16:09

I had my second child at 43. Im now 50 and feel and look like a much younger woman. I think that 50 today is very different from how it was when we were small.

WavesAndWildflowers · 06/04/2024 16:13

How old was the police officer? Probably only 12 or something 😂

Irridescantshimmmer · 06/04/2024 16:14

By today's standards, or society someone in their 50s is still classed as middle aged.

From the perspective of those who were alive in the 1800s, when the average lifespan was in the 40s, people in their 50s were seen as elderly.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 06/04/2024 16:35

I hate labels and generalisations, so silver surfers, over 55's (like what changes between 54 and 364 days and 55!), elderly and I could go on. I am 62, just been out and mowed our very large garden, still working full time and what if I start calling 20 / 30 somethings babyish, childlike, infantile or those at 40 midlifers and halfway to the gravers! Labels lead to lazy thinking and assumptions, whatever area of society they are used in. I often think age labels are because those in marketing want to somehow imagine their target audiences, which makes it easy to push ads for assisted lift chairs, where the incumbent practically does a somersault in their attempt to leave it, which is plain laughable. I wish people would treat people as they need to be treated, at whatever age and whatever their need, and not think lumping them into groups is the way to go, it so isn't! Soapbox pushed back under the table now, I hate people labelling anyone!

StMarieforme · 06/04/2024 16:40

Elderly is generally 80+ these days.

Stupid cop.

Blondiebeachbabe · 06/04/2024 16:41

Actually, the cop looked to be late 40's, which makes it even more bizarre!

My Dad is 82 and most definitely "elderly" - not very mobile, gets muddled etc, whereas FIL is 75 and walks for miles, lifts weights, is a tech whizz etc. So different for just a 6 year age gap.

I'm 53, albeit, a young looking 53, and usually pass for someone in my early 40's. This is not a 'vanity post' 😂, btw, I am making a point. I remember a holiday with my parents and grandparents when I was about 10. Both grannies were sat on the beach, wearing typical 60's swimming costumes and hair caps, genuinely looking about 80. It's only when I think about my own age and becoming a grandma at some point that I realise they were not 80. They were probably a couple of years older than me. Maybe not really relevant to this post, but it does show you that 57 probably would have definitely been regarded as elderly in the 70's as 57 year old women, looked bloody elderly!!

Don't worry, his mother will have given him a bollocking for it.

CupOfTeaNoSugar · 06/04/2024 16:45

My mum & dad are early 70s, I wouldn’t even describe them as elderly, never mind someone in there 50s.

They look younger then their years and are both fortunately still very active.

My mum, especially, would be vexed to be described as “elderly”!

Shinyeyes · 06/04/2024 16:45

My DF was not elderly at 84. Still running around with DGC and playing football. However at 85 he very suddenly is.

I think it can be a (type of) man thing - a male that age is just 'older than me', but a female is seen as elderly if she isn't physically attractive to him.

The type that think they're being realistic about their own appeal when they enter "18-32" and "no children, broadminded, up for fun and goodtimes" on their OLD profiles.

Mammma91 · 06/04/2024 16:46

Wow. I thought elderly was retirement age??

MaMisled · 06/04/2024 16:48

Are you talking about the owner of the boarding house op? My 26 year old daughter told me it was about an old lady murderer and that i'd love it. I'm 57!
