Do kids get bored doing the same thing every day?

I’ve run out of inspiration and I’m resorting to soft play every day. I don’t know if they mind or not. Just wondering what others think.

Kids are generally pretty transparent about being bored or not wanting to do something. If they’re eager to go each time then I’d assume they are. Unless it’s raining, I’d probably try to get them some outdoor play time as well.

PartnersInCrime · 04/04/2024 12:44

The same soft play or different ones? I'm sure that the novelty will wear off, but with the weather so awful, there's a limit on what can be done...

We tend to alternate with coffee and a walk/library visit/garden centre/soft play - and we have 3 to choose from

AnnaMagnani · 04/04/2024 12:45

Being bored and so having to use imaginative play is a crucial part of child development.

MintGreenC · 04/04/2024 12:49

Depends on ages, mine would get bored pretty quickly

SKG231 · 04/04/2024 12:50

visit mullitple local parks.

do research on local museums etc, they usually have free children areas or activities on.

Do baking/cooking at home. Doesn’t need to be anything Gordon Ramsay style. A simple box cake mix or home made pizzas using bases/pittas/wraps witu tomato sauce, cheese and toppings.

Libraries for kids groups or even just checking out some books.

Write up a check list or use pictures for them to tick off on a local walk. Can you see 3 pigeons, a traffic cone, a bus?

make watching a movie at home a bigger deal. Let them know what you’re watching and have them make movie posters/tickets etc and pretend you’re at a cinema. Someone can write up a menu and ask the customers what drink/snack they would like!

I don't take my kids out everyday - they have hundreds of £ of toys and games in their bedrooms, Disney+ and NowTV Kids, bikes, scooters, a garage full of garden toys and a nice garden to play in. They also enjoy arts & crafts, home baking and helping in the garden.I thinks it's good for them just to stay at home and enjoy their own surroundings.

I couldn't afford to take money to the soft play everyday - bus + entry + drinks & snacks = £30.00 a visit where I live.

AhBiscuits · 04/04/2024 13:00

So far I've taken mine too

A Model village
Caves
Aquarium
Softplay
Arcade

We also have planned

Circus
Theme park
Two days of Holiday club

They're on their second day of doing nothing much at home today. They have been drawing and are currently playing a spot the difference game. I've been doing chores. We're going to bake this afternoon.

Mine do complain if they don't have variety and they complain about being bored if we're at home too long. School holidays cost me a fortune, especially when the weather is awful and I don't fancy standing in a soggy park.

AnnaMagnani · 04/04/2024 13:07

I swear 99%of outings that age were the library, the post office and the corner shop.

At home it was join in with mum - ineffective cleaning and inedible biscuits from me but I must have enjoyed it as I can remember it.

Buffysoldersister · 04/04/2024 13:09

I think if they are happy to go you're fine, but personally I couldn't stand soft play and would have to mix it up for my own sanity

PotatoPudding · 04/04/2024 13:10

DH always has a go at me if I don’t take DS out, but I didn’t buy him toys for them to sit in cupboards while we go out all day.

DS will soon let me know if he’s bored.

thatsnotmynamethstsnotmyname · 04/04/2024 13:38

@AnnaMagnani this is exactly what I told my children yesterday when they were moaning about the (expensive) activity we did.

I told them they can have a school holiday like I had next time. Then they can moan!

There are some good ideas here but mine are a bit too young for most of them. Parks are really no fun in the wet - I know puddle suits etc but one is just a baby so stuck miserable in the pushchair under her rain cover and the other ends up slipping and getting upset. Neither would watch a film.

We do have a role play village but went not long ago so don’t want to overuse if you like!

How old are they op? Colouring competition? Teddies bear picnic? Racing toy cars?

No ones interested in colouring, shame as I rather enjoy it. Don’t think they’d go for a teddy bear picnic. DS loves a toy car but that’s what, ten minutes being generous?

Mine are teens and they’re bored. It’s even worse! I long for the soft play days…

Why does your DH "have a go at you" if you don't take your child out?

Growlybear83 · 04/04/2024 14:21

I took my daughter out a couple of times a week when she was very young and the rest of the time we spent on the floor playing with her toys, doing puzzles, drawing, and reading stories. There never seemed to be enough hours in the day!

Go to pets at home to see the animals
Library
Trip to the cafe
Role play cafe
Write a short shopping list together and go and go buy the things you need
Baking
Pitta bread pizza
Painting
Go for a scoot
Lots small outings (as everything takes forever at this age) like walk to the corner shop to but a pint of milk

Blahblahblaaaah · 04/04/2024 14:37

Most of those wouldn’t be interesting to them, or would take twenty minutes tops. Not trying to be awkward bur I can hardly bake with a baby and DS isn’t interested. Baby going through a very screamy stage so I don’t think people in the cafe would thank me!

I am in awe of people who think this, not in a sarcy way but honestly 12 hours of trying to entertain young kids in the house is hard work for me, an activity may take up 15 mins or so then you've still got another 11 and a half hours to fill, it's draining

fishfingersandtoes · 04/04/2024 14:42

When I was a kid I played in the streets or the garden every day bar a couple of weeks a year. I don't remember boredom being an issue, but i had the freedom to play a variety of different games with lots of different people, plus the library so lots to read.
I think soft play each day will have variety to it as there will be different kids and different games to play in there.

Growlybear83 · 04/04/2024 14:43

@Blahblahblaaaah Admittedly I only had one child so it was much easier for me, but I loved every day when she was little, and I think I regressed back to my own childhood a bit, when my mum played with me for what seemed to be every day until I started school. 😆😆
