A man broke my arm yesterday

garlictwist · 04/04/2024 05:40

To be fair, accidentally. He collided with me in the swimming pool as he seemed incapable of swimming in a straight line. My arm is broken. I'm meant to be going on a kayakjing holiday this week which I'm having to cancel. I feel really sad as I've had such a tough year and it's been one thing after another. I'm in pain and pissed off. I'm just glad it was my arm and not my lower body as that would be worse.

Body to body contact in a swimming pool broke your arm? What did he do? Body slam you?

Would suggest you get a bone density check! Or have him charged

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 04/04/2024 05:48

I can't imagine how that would happen with normal swimming, you don't say he jumped on you or smashed you into the wall. I hope you told the doctor how it broke so they can check if there's an issue with your bone density. I have a friend who gets breaks very easily but she has osteoporosis.

Codlingmoths · 04/04/2024 05:49

What does the pool do? If you’re just swimming in your lane and someone swims into you surely someone is at fault?

Highlighta · 04/04/2024 05:50

That man must have had quite a pace going..

But that is awful, does he know how badly you are injured?

If it makes you feel any better, please know I too had a ridiculous reason for having a broken arm. My then very enthusiastic large breed puppy decided to take a short cut during puppy training and instead of running through the tunnel to find me, jumped right over it, landing on me. Broken arm in cast for 6 weeks.

I hope you heal soon and so sorry about the kayaking trip.

lightinthebox · 04/04/2024 05:51

I don’t understand how that managed to break your arm though. If he was jumping in and forced you into a wall that could do it, but just swimming?

I’d definitely get checked out for bone density, could have been a lot worse when kayaking.

ViaRia01 · 04/04/2024 05:59

Really sorry you broke your arm. Agree with other posters re osteoporosis- best to get that checked out.
Thread title is a bit misleading and unfair really.

FrenchandSaunders · 04/04/2024 06:02

How did that happen?

WandaWonder · 04/04/2024 06:03

What was he doing Synchronised Water Pole dancing ?

garlictwist · 04/04/2024 06:05

He was going at a pace as was I. Our arms collided. So blunt trauma I guess. The doctor didn't seem to think it was an issue for concern re bone density.

ParsonsPont · 04/04/2024 06:05

Sorry that you’ve had to go through that, and we do hope it’s not painful.

But you’ve clearly chosen an attention grabbing headline yet provided no information! What on earth happened?!

SBHon · 04/04/2024 06:06

I get you OP. I’d be sad and angry too.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/04/2024 06:13

Oh mate that's rubbish luck. Was he at all apologetic? Can you do the kayak holiday later in the year?

haveyoutriedturningitoffandonagain · 04/04/2024 06:44

Aw sorry to hear that. Will your insurance cover it or do they still expect you to go?

lljkk · 04/04/2024 07:01

wow. I swim a lot (sharing fast lane with butterfliers & crazy kid club swimmers & channel swimmers who move in six packs) & never had any sort of blow even close to that bad.

I've also kayak... and have broken my arm 3 times (falls) so can feel your pain! I hope you have a rapid recovery. Did you get a cast? Luckily no need for surgery, or follow-up xrays? Presumably this is forearm not upper? Which bones, just the little one or both right across? Ask for physio in 8 weeks if you feel like you don't have full range of motion back (probably only required if arm is immobilised in a cast).

Breaks can happen surprisingly easily - other posters are talking nonsense. All it takes is an impact at the wrong angle - the impact itself doesn't even have to be that huge.

I'm so sorry you're having to cancel your holiday. What did the man say when it happened?

MyUnpopularOpinion · 04/04/2024 07:19

You poor thing. This is why we need women only swimming sessions back.

Every time I go for a swim there's some massive bloke charging up and down the lane taking up all the space. It's not on.

Now your arm is broken and your holiday ruined and I bet he's come away with hardly a bruise on him.

Guavafish1 · 04/04/2024 07:20

I think you should sue that man

VestibuleVirgin · 04/04/2024 07:34

Bone can be fractured surprisingly easily; the force and direction of the blow affects the outcome.
You can put quite some pressure on an egg standing 'upright' before it breaks, but only a small amount is needed when it's on its side
Physice, innit

This.

I broke my tibia and fibula by missing a step on some stairs. Just landed funny on it!

fieldsofbutterflies · 04/04/2024 08:17

I don't know why everyone is acting so surprised, it doesn't take much force to break a bone.

That's really shit for you @garlictwist - hopefully you can reschedule your holidays.

For what?

If he just swam into her, he's not at fault for anything.

BusyMummy001 · 04/04/2024 08:43

So, a man did not break your arm yesterday - you had a swimming accident in which your arm was broken?

Sorry it will impact your kayaking holiday, but this was just an unfortunate collision. No need to blame the other party when you were both swimming at speed.

I would contact the pool to make sure it is logged and they can review their lane sharing policy/protocols, though, as dangerous collisions in the fast lane should not happen if swimmers are following the rules.

I have just broken my tibia and buggered the ligaments falling down stairs!
It bloody hurts!

TeatimeForTheSoul · 04/04/2024 09:04

Feeling for you OP
Was he one on those guys who does head down crawl with no style and all power, their arms windmilling out over into adjacent lanes? I’ve clashed arm with a couple of those over the years and been left bruised. Did he notice?
Might be worth chasing bone density issue with GP to make sure all ok.

Snap. Pulled sideways off a bench by a large breed puppy. Broken wrist. I landed on concrete. These things happen.
