A man broke my arm yesterday

garlictwist · 04/04/2024 05:40

To be fair, accidentally. He collided with me in the swimming pool as he seemed incapable of swimming in a straight line. My arm is broken. I'm meant to be going on a kayakjing holiday this week which I'm having to cancel. I feel really sad as I've had such a tough year and it's been one thing after another. I'm in pain and pissed off. I'm just glad it was my arm and not my lower body as that would be worse.

You poor thing. This is why we need women only swimming sessions back.

Every time I go for a swim there's some massive bloke charging up and down the lane taking up all the space. It's not on.

Now your arm is broken and your holiday ruined and I bet he's come away with hardly a bruise on him.

Absolutely. I stopped swimming because I became increasingly tired of men trying to either race me or overtake me when there wasn’t enough room.
That’s without mentioning the ones that tried to chat me up. Yuck.

Sorry about your arm OP. I would also ensure it was logged in their accident book.

Whycantbonesbelikelego · 04/04/2024 09:08

I slipped off a step and broke my foot. 8 months and still not right. Hate growing older.

FinnJuhl · 04/04/2024 09:11

How unlucky for you, especially with the kayaking holiday coming up.

It was certainly the man' fault if he wasn't following the lane protocol. Not an accident if he was on the wrong side.

PollyPut · 04/04/2024 09:18

@garlictwist ouch. do you go to the same gym? If so I'd be speaking to them - they need to understand that this guy needs to slow down in their pool (as he will, no doubt, be back)

Julianne65 · 04/04/2024 10:19

I broke my wrist last year after a little fall. The way a landed caused the break. No problem with my bone density apparently.

It does suck indeed but you get a cool coloured plaster once the swelling goes down and I actually loved the attention I got from everyone (strangers included). Met three lovely ladies at the fracture clinic. We all had the same injury, same wrist and same colour of plaster. Called our selves the pink ladies.

Before you know it you will be healed. Buy yourself a waterproof plaster sheath for the shower and bath. It really helps! Always keep scissors handy to open things. Don’t feel bad about getting ready meals or easy meals for the next few weeks. And once it’s off be diligent with your physio. Good luck!

#@garlictwist

I think 🤔 you or have someone you know speak on your behalf, definitely need to have a word with whoever runs,
in charge of the swimming sessions,
about your accident,
as soon as possible,

as the swimming staff need to tell this male swimmer in future needs to be a much more considerate swimmer of other swimmers,
and to stick to his lane of swimming,

He sounds like he is powerful physique swimmer who just doesn't know his own strength at times etc, !

otherwise if nothing is said to swimming staff people or swimming leisure centre manager,

this is definitely be another swimming accident collision waiting to happen for sure sooner or later down the line..

Berlinlover · 04/04/2024 10:40

Bit of a strange thread title.

tara66 · 04/04/2024 10:42

Did the pool not have marked swimming lanes? Was there a life guard who show be watching? Can you sue someone?

tara66 · 04/04/2024 10:43

Should

garlictwist · 04/04/2024 10:44

Sorry if the title was misleading. I wrote it in a bit of a funk as I'm feeling very down today. I didn't mean to be dramatic or lie or whatever. It was technically his fault as you are supposed to swim up and down in a certain line and he was straying over into the swimmers coming the other way (me).

it was the pool at my work. I've told them what happened but it was a genuine accident, not done out of malice but carelessness. I will get over it and I know these things happen. but right now I feel like wallowing.

Did he know he had injured you?

cerisepanther73 · 04/04/2024 10:48

@MyUnpopularOpinion

Snap you beat me to it,

I totally agree with your post,
i was thinking 🤔 exactly this is definitely on of the main reasons 💯 why we need to bring back women only swimming 🏊‍♀️ sessions in all swimming leisure facilities.

Also having women only sessions would encourage women from diverse cultral backgrounds too,
due to religious cultral reasons could well be put off mixed swimming too..

Jk8 · 04/04/2024 10:48

If he was swimming out of lane or "badly" you would claim against the swimming pools liability insurance

Speak to a no win - no fee lawyer to get advice if your out of pocket on the trip

Katiesaidthat · 04/04/2024 10:49

Itsallok · 04/04/2024 05:42

Body to body contact in a swimming pool broke your arm? What did he do? Body slam you?

Would suggest you get a bone density check! Or have him charged

A guy and I crashed into each other in the pool as he hadn´t noticed other swimmers had joined his line and it was like being hit by a subway train. If he caught her arm at a weird angle, that´s it.

Hoppinggreen · 04/04/2024 10:50

JosieJones1987 · 04/04/2024 08:20

For what?

If he just swam into her, he's not at fault for anything.

If he was negligent he might be deemed to be at fault but I agree it would be hard to prove

Rosscameasdoody · 04/04/2024 10:55

garlictwist · 04/04/2024 06:05

He was going at a pace as was I. Our arms collided. So blunt trauma I guess. The doctor didn't seem to think it was an issue for concern re bone density.

Neither did my doctor when I fractured my femur. Two years later I’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis and am starting some quite unpleasant treatment because it’s already caused damage and the hope is that the treatment will prevent any more. Without a DEXA scan it’s just guesswork.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 04/04/2024 10:59

I’m sorry OP that really sucks, I hope the pain eases soon and you get a chance to go on your holiday eventually Flowers

EmmaEmerald · 04/04/2024 11:01

@garlictwist ""but right now I feel like wallowing"

I completely understand this. Have some safe virtual hugs from me. I don't give a crap if it's not Mumsnetty.

You'll be feeling the shock for a few days, so please don't be hard on yourself. You might need to just veg and do nothing. 💐

Chamomileteaplease · 04/04/2024 11:10

Yes poor you @garlictwist that is awful. Really bad luck combined with someone else's carelessness.

And your holiday too 😞. My sympathies to you. I hope you can at least have a restful time off work instead.

fatphalange · 04/04/2024 11:22

That's so shit :( I'm sorry Flowers

EpicPineapple · 04/04/2024 11:26

I hope you’ve ensured the man knows OP? I know that probably isn’t your priority right now, but he needs to be much more careful in future if his arms are this heavy and strong.

Ugh this is why women need single sex spaces. This couldn’t have happened in a women-only swim session.

Sorry about your holiday 😭 I’d be tempted to sue the man for the cost of rescheduling your holiday but I’m quite litigious.

I would investigate this for sure.

I know a lot of MNers start screaming “it was an accident!!” at the very suggestion of this kind of thing, but pools need to learn lessons when it comes to safety, inconsiderate/dangerous swimmers, and the lack of female-only sessions.

MsFaversham · 04/04/2024 11:37

Good that you have reported it. I do wish lifeguards would pull up aggressive swimmers, nearly always male, who think they can barge into anyone they like at pace. It’s happened to me many times and I’ve had to ask lifeguards to be a bit more proactive.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 04/04/2024 11:37

Something else to consider: if you can't take your planned holiday can you move it, particularly the time off work? If you need time off due to the injury then don't use holiday for that. Hopefully you are insured and can recover some of the holiday costs.

cerisepanther73 · 04/04/2024 11:51

@Jk8 @EpicPineapple

I agree with your posts,

especially @Jellycats4life
Swimming leisure facilities places need to learn lessons from inconsiderate or and dangerous swimmers, when it comes to safety wise and ensure they are pro -active on issues such as this,
also good case for promoting encouraging women only sessions..

Definitely tell that male Swimmer about whats happened to you cause of Swimming collusion @garlictwist ..
