Posh hotel un-asked for alarm at 6 - compensation?!

Staying in a v posh hotel. Think 900 Swiss francs per night...

Just got woken up by a bloody alarm. Picked up phone and got a recorded message saying we had asked for a 6am alarm. We hadn't!! It woke us both and now we can't get back to sleep.

Rang reception, who were puzzled about the alarm but not v apologetic.

AIBU to think they could offer a small gesture to apologise?? Eg a free bottle of wine?! Or AIB greedy and mistakes happen?!

For that money I’d want a goodwill gesture, how incredibly annoying.

Tedaaaaaaaaah · 03/04/2024 09:21

I'm with you OP. Posh hotels live and die by their customer service. We recently had ALL of our food, drink, and room service taken off our bill due to building work happening in the next street. Certainly nothing the hotel can do about it, but they never warned us, and it spoilt our stay. They agreed and offered a goodwill gesture commensurate with the standard of the hotel.

Getting woken up by them at 6am is not on. I'd expect an apology and would also expect them to make some sort of gesture with breakfast. I'd not go out of my way to request it, but I'd sort of expect them to do it

5128gap · 03/04/2024 09:22

You sound like a right grifter OP. Staying in an expensive hotel and wanting to jump on a chance to squeeze a free bottle of wine out of them! A mistake warrants an apology, occasionally appropriate compensation to put you back to the position you'd have been in had it not happened (so a replacement drink it they spill yours for example) not free stuff just for the sake of it.

Give them a chance to do something about it. They apologised at 6am, which is about as much you can do then.

I once missed an internal flight as I wasn’t woken up. I was presenting at a conference. The hotel organised a taxi to take me the few hours’ journey. It was horrendous overall due to the heat and stress.

If you're staying in Switzerland could it be a case of a mistranslation or something you accidentally marked on a form?
I do agree that it is very annoying to be woken early. I never really expect to get the best night's sleep at hotels though, nothing is ever as good as your own bed which is why holidays are exhausting..

No, it wasn't. I speak French. Would probably have noticed if I'd filled in a form for a wake-up call!!

This is a situation where you just put your big girl pants on, go to reception, make a complaint and see what they do. Putting it to MN to be unpicked to the Nth degree blows it up into something entirely unnecessary, bringing out the pearl clutters, bleeding heart social activists suddenly outraged on behalf of hotel workers' rights and angry mobs. Those who don't care wouldn't do anything, those that do, would, you care, so just go do something about it.

Fair enough! That's so true.

But then if we applied those rules to MN, there wouldn't be many posts left!

No yanbu, some people stay on hotels to get a good rest and sleep and a good lie in. I would have been mad, 8am onwards fine but before that on my day off no I would expect a big apology for an expensive hotel

Fingeronthebutton · 03/04/2024 08:27

Your showing that your not used to staying in up market hotels.
If you were you would not talk about the price ( bad form) and you certainly wouldn’t ask for bottle of wine as an apology 🤦🏼‍♀️

😂😂😂 The price was to set the scene. I don't know you, so hot it is bad form?!

I've not got my glasses on. Just seen it was 6am which is still early but not horrendous

I beg to differ. And so, clearly, does OP - and rightly so. Just because you may have a cat or toddler that wakes you at silly o'clock is no excuse to minimize the rightful expectations of other people.

I once accidentally booked the wrong day in Liverpool Premier Inn - it was totally my fault, realised my mistake at check in and paid again for the correct day (wrong booking was refundable so no harm done). Wasn't the hotel's fault at all. No one kicked off, I was just like "omg oops!" and thankfully they had a free room. The receptionist still popped up to the room half an hour later to check we were all settled in OK and give us a box of Milk Tray in case it had been stressful.

Thank you for sharing your completely irrelevant experience, which was your mistake, with us...

I would expect a good sleep, if I lost 25% of my sleep and that is worth 80% of my stay then I would want a 20% discount.... if I wanted to not sleep I would not have booked an expensive hotel!

Also it’s “you’re”

I refrained from mentioning that!! 😂

That's awful. You must feel so violated and distressed.

I hope the hotel offer to move you to a safe place where the room is sound proofed, in complete darkness and the air removed.

We got a completely free night in a Hilton hotel when we were woken by a porter bringing us a toothbrush we hadn’t asked for at 4am. I didn’t actually complain, but when they asked if we’d enjoyed our stay I mentioned it and got a freebie!

Omg! I like it.

I don't get why you are getting such a pasting. I would expect an apology gesture of some kind, as well. People talk about 'compensation culture' being out of hand, but I think that there has been a rise in cavalier and uncaring customer service.

TheSnowyOwl · 03/04/2024 09:37

So many people are so entitled and greedy. Compensation for an accidental alarm?! I’ll let our peacock know that I’m expecting similar on a daily basis for waking me up.

theeyeofdoe · 03/04/2024 09:37

I would absolutely be complaining, I can't believe how many people wouldn't. That's why we have shit service, as people don't complain.

Being woken up at 6am when you're on holiday, just because a member of staff has forgotten to turn off the alarm for your room was completely avoidable.

I would be speaking to the front desk manager.

ChinnyChin2 · 03/04/2024 09:38

YANBU - that would spoil my stay a bit, not ruin it obviously, but take a bit away from it.

Definitely say something at reception!
