Is anyone else totally shocked by their own age?

I feel like the last time I checked, I was around 29. I'm now 41 and feel like I've lost a decade! I've young kids, including a toddler so have spent the past 9 years pregnant, breastfeeding and in the thick of nappies, potty training, Paw Patrol and all things Young Kids. It has kid of blindsided me to the fact that I'm actually middle aged. In my head I'm late twenties and feel like things have been on pause since then (in a good way). I have friends around the same age with teenagers, kids at uni etc and I honestly don't think I'm old enough for that to even be possible, but it is? I was brushing my hair and caught sight of my hands and noticed they have aged a lot. Then I thought, yeah but you're in your 40s now! I'm still having regular periods, just stopped breastfeeding 6 months ago and I just don't feel any different!

Anybody else?

I am! Every birthday I think "What?! No way. That can't be right....can it?!"

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 02/04/2024 09:27

Shocked? I’m fucking horrified

35965a · 02/04/2024 09:27

I kind of know what you mean. I find it weird though, I’m mid 30s, my children are coming to the end of primary school. All my social circle have toddlers and babies so I feel so old compared to them, even though I am one of the younger ones.

BentFork · 02/04/2024 09:27

I feel like I've only been my age for a few months and then another birthday rolls around! The older I get time seems to get quicker & quicker

LampShadeTaj · 02/04/2024 09:28

lol tell me about it’ I’m same age as you expect mine are a lot older and yes I do wonder where time has gone OP!! I think it’s normal to have regular periods at 41.

Yep, this is me.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 02/04/2024 09:28

Yes it genuinely horrifies me sometimes as well. Dh is 9 years older than me and his age shocks me too.

where did the time go?!

soupfiend · 02/04/2024 09:28

Yep, this is me.

😆 It’s awful.

Fullofconfusion · 02/04/2024 09:31

Yep!! All the time.

I think you get so far into life and your body ages but your brain doesn’t so you are constantly surprised by it as you feel exactly the same mentally

OwlCityisthemostunderrated · 02/04/2024 09:32

Yes. I very much relate to the 10 year jump, and the feeling that things were paused.

giadaros · 02/04/2024 09:32

I was having this conversation today. Life is flying by at an astonishing speed. It doesn't feel that long ago that I was a child and my parents were my age. I am the same age as you but also still feel like I am in my 20s.
I can't quite believe that my parents are becoming elderly. It's hard to wrap my head around at times.

opalescent · 02/04/2024 09:34

I'm also 41, and....what the hell?!!!! I totally get it. I thought 40s was ancient when I was a kid. Like, really old. I just don't feel old. I cannot believe that all the people 'in my school year' are also 41. The fact that I still think of people as being 'in my school year' says it all!!

Having said that, I can't be arsed to drink, dress up, or go out any more. And I've developed a serious interest in storage solutions and comfy footwear.

YouG0GlenCoco · 02/04/2024 09:34

Yes! If I see a news story for example about a 36 year old woman, I think of someone much older than me... then I realise I am 36! Still feel I am 23/24 in my head 😂 which is actually when I started having babies so maybe that's why I'm stuck there 🤷‍♀️

SmallGoddess · 02/04/2024 09:35

I'm 60. I went to my 40 year reunion a few weeks ago. No one had changed a bit. We are all still 20.

AmandaHoldensLips · 02/04/2024 09:35

Don't even.
I recently turned 60 and I'm in deep shock.

suki1964 · 02/04/2024 09:37

Scares the shit out of me

Grandson is having his 18th this year ffs

Im married to a pensioner !!! ( he has his bus pass)

Im the big 60 this year but I swear to god Im only 30 something

Fatfriends23 · 02/04/2024 09:37

My DH is a few years older than me and sometimes I can't believe I'm married to a 40 year old 😂. I still feel mid 20s and that I just graduated but I've been in my career for 15 years now 😮

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/04/2024 09:40

41 is nothing!

This Is the birthday card I sent to an ex colleague not long ago - I already knew the feeling!

Is anyone else totally shocked by their own age?
Librarybooker · 02/04/2024 09:45

We weren’t successful with trying to have kids until I was 43. In the end, I think this has been for the best as we didn’t miss out on the slightly more affluent 30s and the childfree options it offered. By the time parenthood came I didn’t mind being part time for a bit. Now DC in sixth form I can start thinking about retirement at some point. That does feel old, but determined to rock it as best I can 😂

RancidRuby · 02/04/2024 09:46

I turn 50 next year and it feels like it wasn't that long ago I turned 40. Time does seem to speed up the older you get. Turning 40 didn't bother me, but I must admit that my 50th looming has rattled me with the realisation that I'm over half way through my life (if I'm lucky). I love so many things about getting older (giving less fucks mainly), but it's also bloody awful in some ways (aging in terms of loss of looks and moreso the annoyance of my body just not being as physically able anymore) but I just try to stay in the present, have some gratitude and try not to think too much about it all TBH.

Babyroobs · 02/04/2024 09:46

Yes my dh turned 60 last week and I think we are both still in shock.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 02/04/2024 09:48

Yep. I still feel much the same as I did at 25 but sometimes remember my age and think I must've fallen asleep like Rip van Winkel and suddenly found myself a lot older. I'm really hoping reincarnation is a thing, so I can come back and live in the Caribbean, walk the pilgrim ways, learn to skydive, go on loads of TV quiz shows, etc etc because one lifetime isn't enough! But think of having to go through school again, going through puberty and all the pain of navigating friendships as a teen and all that! No thanks. I know I can still do some things but, e.g. watching the Mastermind final last night realised I'd never go on it because my mind is just too slow now, and thanks to long Covid I haven't got any puff for long walks. Bring on the pub quizzes, though! I'm 65 (aargh!).

Peridot1 · 02/04/2024 09:49

I’ll be 60 next month and I’m definitely in shock. I know it’s better than the alternative but I am really not happy about it. Or everything that comes with it! Ugh.

I’d bloody love to be 41 again!

NotFastButFurious · 02/04/2024 09:51

yep, I was having a conversation about this with a friend yesterday (47 & 50) and how we don't feel any older or more grown up than when we were in our 20's. I don't have kids so guess i haven't been through that milestone but even friends who have I don't see as being any different or older to before, it's just that somehow the kids have aged 15 years and we haven't!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/04/2024 09:51

Yes. Surely I was 28 just last week?
